إرتبط الحجاب في المجتمع بالمقدس الديني وبالعرف الاجتماعي، فهو شكلانية للمظهر الأنثوي وتلبيس له بالطهارة والعفة والحياء، وفي الوقت ذاته إلزام للمرأة بنمط سلوكي أخلاقي يرتّب علاقتها بالفضاء الذكوري.

فبالقدر الذي يُرتهن الحجاب لسلطوية الفحولة في المجتمعات المحافظة إلا أن سطوته على المرأة تتراجع بسبب المحمول الذي تموضعه عن الحجاب كلباس يساير تعقيد الحياة اليومية ومتطلباتها.
