Structural and optical properties for PVA- PEG-MnCl2 composites
...Show More Authors

Polymer films of PEG and PVA and their blend with different
concentrations of MnCl2 (0, 2, 4, 6 and 10 %.wt) were study using
casting technique. The X-ray spectra of pure PEG, PVA and
PVA:PEG films and with addition of 2% concentrations from
(MnCl2) show amorphous structures. The results for FTIR show the
interaction between the filler and polymer blend results in
decreasing crystallinity with rich amorphous phase. This
amorphous nature confirms the complexation between the filler and
the polymer blend. The optical properties of (PVA:PEG/MnCl2)
contain the recording of absorbance (A) and explain that the
absorption coefficient (α), refractive index (n), extinction coefficient

Possible Protective Effects of Saw Palmetto Extract in Indomethacin Treated Rats
...Show More Authors

Background: Indomethacin is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for treating pain and fever. It is coupled with oxidative stress and an inflammatory response, which accounts for several detrimental effects on the body’s organs.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the potential of using SSaw palmetto extract to counteract the oxidative stress and inflammatory response resulting from Indomethacin treatment in rat models.

Methods: The study involved 20 male albino rats, arbitrarily sorted into four groups of 5 animals each group. Group 1 (control group) was neither induced nor treated. Groups (2-4) were treated with oral Omeprazole (20 mg/kg/day) and Saw pal

Background: Klebsiella oxytoca is an emerging pathogen causing hospital- and community-acquired infections. Hypermucoviscous phenotype and biofilm development are considered markers of hypervirulence, causing invasive infections in healthy adults
Objective: The current study aimed to evaluate the ability of K. oxytoca isolates to form biofilms and incorporate hypermucoviscous characteristics.
Method: One hundred K. oxytoca isolates were collected from hospitals in the Medical City Teaching Hospital Complex, in Baghdad, Iraq. The isolates were identified by conducting manual and biochemical tests. The hypermucoviscous characteristic was analyzed by usi

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Breast reduction for mammary hypertrophy is a highly effective procedure with high degree of patient satisfaction. There are many methods of breast reduction which involve removal of excess tissue with reshaping of overlying skin while maintaining a viable nipple areolar complex. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of the superomedial technique as an effective method for reduction mammoplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients underwent reduction mammoplasty by utilizing superomedial pedicle technique between 2010 and 2013. Those patients were evaluated postoperatively in terms of their aesthetic and functional satisfaction, viability of nipple – areolar complex and nipple sensory p

Due to the high incidence of inadequate response to insulin and, we try to evaluate the effects of adjunct use of silymarin with insulin on glycemic control, lipid profile and renal function in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients.
Patients and Methods: Placebo-controlled, doubled blinded clinical trial method is utilized through which 60 type 1 DM patients allocated into two groups, 30 patients treated with insulin and silymarin 400 mg/day in two divided doses, while the other 30 patients treated with insulin and placebo for 60 days. Fasting serum gluco

Background: Sildenafil, a selective phosphodiesterase -5 (PDE-5) inhibitor increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and amplifies many biological actions of nitric oxide (NO) which is an important mediator of gastric mucosal defense ; was evaluated in this study using different doses for its cytoprotective effect on gastric mucosal damage induced by indomethacin . We also evaluated the effect of this drug on NO production, Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis, Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and Interlukin-4 (IL-4) expression.
Methods: The study was performed between April and July 2008 in the Department of Pharmacology / College of Medicine /Baghdad University .It was conducted on 80 adult male albin

Relation- ships of neonatal septicemia with the mean serum levels of IL-8 and IL-1 in three large hospitals in Baghdad
...Show More Authors

Background: Neonatal septicemia (NNS) is the most serious complication in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) that demand urgent diagnosis and accurate treatment.
Methods: Serum was obtained from 31 neonates aged 1 hour-28 days that were diagnosed clinically and bacteriologically to have neonatal septicemia.
Results: Mean serum levels of both IL-8 and IL-1 recorded a significant increase in neonatal septicemia cases.
Conclusion: Usage of IL-8, IL-1 as diagnostic marker for NNS reduces unnecessary antibiotic therapy and therefore unnecessary costs, pain, and possible side effects of antibiotic
therapy and it may help to reduce development and spread of drug resistant bacteria.
