A Cognitive Linguistic Study of Framing the Pictorial Representations of the Word APPLE
...Show More Authors

The current study is qualitative in nature; it focuses on examining the participants‟ various pictorial representations of the word APPLE to ultimately understand their patterns and sources of thinking. That is, the study is basically focusing on the concept of concept, the invisible part of language. To meet this objective, the researchers adopted Fillmore‟s (1982) theory of Frame Semantics. Data of the study has been collected from two sources, secondary and primary, as represented by the concrete word APPLE, and the eight purposively selected participants for being talented in drawing, respectively. The study has concluded that at the denotative level, the word APPLE has encompassed a range of different details, let alone the connotative aspect of it. The participants have not only disagreed denotatively, but they have also varied stylistically through attaching different adjectives and nouns to the word apple, such as bitten, rotten, complete, colored; apple iphone, teeth, tree, lady, etc. Further, not all the participants have associated APPLE to the fruit; P1, for instance, thinks metonymically, as she recalls an iphone device, whereas P5 thinks metaphtonymically. The word APPLE represents a catalyst for highlighting an array of various frames, frame elements, and scenes reflecting as a result the participants‟ distinct levels of experiences, awareness, level of thinking, etc. Finally, the theory of frame semantics has proven its applicability to visual images particularly to pictorial concepts.

A Cognitive Linguistic Study of the English Preposition 'in'
...Show More Authors

The present study aims at analyzing the polysemy of the English preposition in from the cognitive linguistic (CL) point of view using Evans' and Tyler's approach (2003). The perplexity faced by Iraqi second language learners (L2) due to the multi-usages of this preposition has motivated the researcher to conduct this study. Seventy-six second year university students participated in this experimental study. The data of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed by SPSS statistical editor. The results have shown the following: First, a progress of more than (0.05≤) has been detected as far as students' understanding of the multiple usages of the preposition in is concerned. Second, the results of the questionnaire have s

A Cognitive Linguistic Study of the Present Simple: An Experimental Study in the University of Baghdad
...Show More Authors

Some research reports that cognitive grammar (CG) theory has good contributions to teaching English as a foreign language. In this research, the researchers seek to apply this theory and its principles when teaching the simple present tense to Iraqi students who face difficulties in differentiating between the multiple usages of this tense. To achieve this objective, the researchers have conducted an experimental study on a group of 60 Iraqi students in the University of Baghdad, College of Education for Women. Langacker’s (2003) theory has been adopted in the analysis of the cognitive relations to understand the common and different connections of these usages of the simple present. A Cognitive Linguistic Study of Visually Shaping Abstract Words
...Show More Authors

The current study qualitatively addresses concept as the main theoretical problem in cognitive linguistics on the one hand, and the abstract nature of things on the other. In this regard, scholars maintained that the issue with concept is still controversial and to deal with abstract nouns is also difficult, let alone when dealing with the concept of abstract noun. Of course the problem will be doubled as the nature of both concepts and abstract nouns is invisible, perspectivised, and changeable. Accordingly, the objective of the present work is to examine  the semantic range of the abstract word BLACKMAILING from the perspectives of a number of talented participants in drawing. That is, the researchers are to address the following

The study has concluded that having activated a similar frame does not necessitate sharing a similar number of elements and/or referents. There is no one-to-one correspondence between the activated frame and th
