A Frame-Semantic Analysis of Textual Memes Generated from Woltze's The Letter: A Cognitive Linguistic Perspective
...Show More Authors

The present paper adopts a qualitative methodology to address the various frames and scenes activated while textually memeing an image macro, specifically, Woltze’s problem picture, The Letter. To achieve this objective, the researcher is to employ Fillmore’s (1976, 1982) Frame Semantics. The data consists of a single image selected following the jurors’ feedback and submitted to purposively selected female students from the Department of English-College of Education for Women-University of Baghdad, using a Google form. The study has concluded that having activated a similar frame does not necessitate sharing a similar number of elements and/or referents. There is no one-to-one correspondence between the activated frame and the scene. Identifying a similar frame does not guarantee having a similar scene. The same image macro can yield multiple construals that are semantically and visually constrained. The emotions generally lean towards the negative side, with an occasional mild sense of humor. Not all the figures in the image have been used in frame and scene construction; rather, the focus has been only on the things that pulled the participants’ attention. The overarching frames share the sense of having a problem, thereby reflecting the problem picture genre.

A Semiotic Comparison of the Textual Memes Generated by Humans and AI-ChatGPT-5
...Show More Authors

The present work is to investigate semiotically the similarities and differences in the textual memes generated by human and AI-ChatGPT-5 and to answer the research question “what are the points of similarity and difference between human and AI-ChatGPT-generated textual memes following Barthes’ framework”. Such a study contributes to the growing field of digital semiotics by examining the process of meaning-making constructed by humans and AI-ChatGPT-5 using one visual stimulus. To meet this objective, a unified image macro “Le Défenseur” by Honoré Daumier has been submitted to a sample of (15) first-year students from the Department of English, College of Education for Women, University of Baghdad, purposively selected

A Cognitive Semantic Analysis of the Preposition at
...Show More Authors

The present work is a pre-step toward large scale research. It aims at achieving two objectives: First, developing a cognitive diagram that covers the semantic range of the preposition at; second, examining EFL learners' semantic range on the preposition at within three broad categories: sentences, expressions and phrasal verbs. Accordingly, the researchers designed a test that covers the overall usages of the preposition at. Such a test helps examining the different cognitive domains of at and analyzing qualitatively and quantitatively the subjects' answers. The model that is used in the analysis of the first objective is Domain Highlighting by William Croft (1993). The main conclusions arrived at are: First, the cognitive theories

Data of the study has been collected from two sources, secondary and primary, as represented by the concrete word APPLE, and the eight purposively selected participants for being talented in drawing, respectively. The study has concluded that at the denotative level, the word APPLE has encompassed a range of different details, let alone the connota

The present study aims at analyzing the polysemy of the English preposition in from the cognitive linguistic (CL) point of view using Evans' and Tyler's approach (2003). The perplexity faced by Iraqi second language learners (L2) due to the multi-usages of this preposition has motivated the researcher to conduct this study. Seventy-six second year university students participated in this experimental study. The data of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed by SPSS statistical editor. The results have shown the following: First, a progress of more than (0.05≤) has been detected as far as students' understanding of the multiple usages of the preposition in is concerned. A Cognitive Linguistic Study of Visually Shaping Abstract Words
...Show More Authors

The current study qualitatively addresses concept as the main theoretical problem in cognitive linguistics on the one hand, and the abstract nature of things on the other. In this regard, scholars maintained that the issue with concept is still controversial and to deal with abstract nouns is also difficult, let alone when dealing with the concept of abstract noun. Of course the problem will be doubled as the nature of both concepts and abstract nouns is invisible, perspectivised, and changeable. Accordingly, the objective of the present work is to examine  the semantic range of the abstract word BLACKMAILING from the perspectives of a number of talented participants in drawing. That is, the researchers are to address the following
