Background: The median nerve in paraplegic patients, who must rely on increased hand activities including transfer and wheel-chair propulsion, may be subjected to increased pressure, so that the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may be higher than that in the normal population.
Objectives: To study the prevalence and the severity of carpal tunnel syndrome in Iraqi paraplegic patients and to identify the effect of duration of the injury as a possible factor related to its occurrence to avoid any chronic problems which interfere with the hand functions since these patients are greatly dependent on their hands for their daily activities.
Patients and Methods: Fifty paraplegic patients (100 hands), whose level of spinal cord injury was below D2, and fifty normal control subjects were included in this study. All patients studied in this work had complete spinal cord injury and were stabled medically and neurologically.
Clinical examination for the signs and symptoms of CTS as well as nerve conduction studies were carried out in both median and ulnar nerves for their sensory and motor components eliciting values for distal latencies for all patients and the control groups.
Results: Thirty percent of the paraplegic patients (15 patients) had signs and symptoms consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and all of them had electrodiagnostic confirmation of this injury.
Seventy percent of these paraplegic patients (35 patients) had no signs and symptoms suggestive of CTS, and only nearly about forty eight percent (17 patients) of them had only electrodiagnostic confirmation of CTS. Overall, 64% of the 50 paraplegic patients had CTS (32 patients). Nine paraplegic patients (18%) exhibiting bilateral CTS. Eight paraplegic patients (16%) had abnormal electrophysiological findings involving the ulnar nerve at the wrist and all of them had electrophysiological findings of CTS.
There was a sharp increase in incidence of occurrence of CTS from 6.3% in the group 1 to 5 years from injury to 13.7% in the group 6 to 10 years, and to 25% in the group 11 to 15 years, and again a very big increase to 50% in the group 16 years and over from injury.
Conclusion: Early testing of the median and ulnar nerve function, even in asymptomatic patients within the first 5 years of the injury, is recommended so for early detection, preventive and/or curative measures to be undertaken considering the fact that these patients are greatly dependent on their hands for their daily activities.
Background: Cognitive dysfunctions in epileptic patients may develop due to the neurophysiologic changes related to seizures or antiepileptic drugs.
Objectives: The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the cognitive dysfunction in epileptic patients under antiepileptic drug therapy by the aid of event related potentials.
Patients & Method: P300 latencies were obtained from Fz, Cz and Pz electrodes positions from both epileptic patients (n = 224) and age and sex matched control group (n = 91). Epileptic patients were classified either having partial epilepsy, generalized epilepsy or both partial and generalized epilepsy (combined epilepsy). EEG and p300 test repeated for each patient every three months for one year. Th
Background: Diabetic nephropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus type2. The neutrophil gelatinase Associated lippocallin (NGAL) is an ubiquitous protein consist of 178 amino acid. NGAL can be identified in plasma and urine starting 2- 4 hours after a kidney injury resulting changes in glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption and with increased secretion in tubular epithelial cells.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the role of serum Neutrophil Gelatinse Associated Lipocallin (NGAL) in early detection nephropathy.
Method : This study was conducted in Medical City, Baghdad Teaching Hospital during the period from December 2015to June 2016.The study included (90) subjects with age range between (30 – 56)yea
Background: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a disorder in which vascular thrombosis and / or recurrent pregnancy losses occur in a patient who has laboratory evidence of antibodies against phospholipids or phospholipids binding protein cofactor. Usually the patient presents at an age between 35- 45 years, with equal male to female ratio. Mostly they present with thrombosis or pregnancy complication. A quarter of the patients have thrombocytopenia and about one fifth have hemolytic anemia. The diagnosis rests on the criteria set as the Revised classification criteria for the Antiphospholipid syndrome

Background:
Objectives : This prospective study aimed to estimate interleukins 1 and 10 levels in acute hepatitis (G) in Iraqi patients with leukemiaHepatitis G virus and GB virus C (GBV-C) RNA viruses that were independently identified in 1995, and were subsequently found to be two isolates of the same virus. Blood transfusion is the main risk factor for HGV transmission Immune-mediated mechanisms are believed to play an important pathogenic role in hepatitis G virus infection. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays an important role in the inflammatory process. implying that IL-1 may play a role in viral clearance and suggesting that IL-1 has direct antiviral

Background: Renal disease results in significant disorder of hemostasis (bleeding diathesis or
hypercoagulable state).
Objectives: This study is to determine the changes in some hemostasis parameters in patients with
chronic renal failure and identify the effect of dialysis on these changes.
Patients and Methods: seventy five patients with end stage chronic renal failure were collected from
Baghdad hospital, a full detailed history and clinical examination were performed, 50 patients were on
maintenance weekly hemodialysis, and 25 patients were without dialysis.
Result: Bleeding time was significantly higher in patients with chronic renal failure who didn’t need
any type of dialysis, positive D-Dimer test. In so
Background: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease caused by abdominal obesity, such as hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance.Adiponectin is a protein hormone that modulates a number of metabolic processes, including glucose regulation and fatty acidcatabolism. Adiponectin is exclusively secreted from adipose tissue into the bloodstream. Leptin, a hormone synthesized by fat tissue had been noted to regulate energy balance and metabolism. In this study investigated the relationships of adiponectin/leptin ratio with metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy Iraqi male adults.
Objective: This study was designed to investigate the r
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders leading to infertility. Majority of women with PCOS have insulin resistance and elevated hemoglobin A1c.The presence of thyroid dysfunction may affect the levels of HbA1c and the results of ovulation induction programs.
... Show MoreBackground: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders. PCOS produces symptoms in approximately 5% to 10% of women of reproductive age (12–45 years old).
Objective: To detect the level of IL-6 in PCOS patients correlated with their serum glucose.
Patients and methods: This is a prospective study carried out at Baghdad teaching hospital in Baghdad/Iraq from November 2011 to January 2012. In this study, 80 blood samples (40 untreated women with PCOS cases and 40 healthy control) were collected to investigate their IL-6 levels by using Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique and fasting blood sugar (FBS) by enzymatic assay.
Results: Serum IL-6 elevated in PCOS patients mainly
Background: Breast cancer ranks the first among the Iraqi population since three decades and is currently forming a major public health problem being the second cause of death women. Novel management of breast cancer depends upon precise evaluation of their molecular subtypes; identified by Hormone (Estrogen and Progesterone) receptors and HER2 contents of the primary tumor.
Objective: To assess the rates of the different molecular breast cancer subtypes in the examined tissue specimens belonging to females diagnosed with breast cancer in Iraq; correlating the findings with those reported in the literature at the regional and global levels.
Patients and Methods: This retrospective study documented the findings of tissue biopsy exam
