A Comparative Study of Cattle and Sheep Amoebiasis in Selected Regions of Baghdad City
...Show More Authors

This study was performed to microscopically detect the prevalence of amoebiasis in cattle and sheep fecal samples. One hundred fecal samples were collected from cattle and sheep from 3 completely different area in Baghdad city (Al-Tarmiyah, Al-Fudhaliyah, AbuGhraib). Our data recorded a total amoebiasis infection rate of 54% in cattle and 50% in sheep, without any significant differences between them. Males showed higher infection rates than females in cattle and sheep (62.5%) and (57.14) respectively. The difference between age groups with significant difference (P<0.01) were obtained in ages <1 year (72.7%) and (68.75%) in cattle and sheep respectively. This study has demonstrated the widespread of En

Age-Dependent Expression of Humanin in the Bull (Bos Taurus) Testis and Its Potential Role in Regulating Hormonal Status, Oxidative Stress and MicroRNA Expression
...Show More Authors

Humanin (HN), a mitochondrial-derived peptide with cytoprotective functions, has not been thoroughly investigated in the bull gonad. This study characterized the developmental localization of HN in the bull testis and its relationship with hormonal status, oxidative stress, and key miRNAs. An age dependent HN expression pattern was seen by immunofluorescence examinations of testicular tissues from pre-pubertal, puberty, mature, and aged bulls. So that, pre-pubertal and aged groups showed faint HN immunoreactivity, pubertal animals showed moderate immunoreactivity, and mature adults showed the most intense immune response (P ≤ 0.0001). In contrast to this, miR-202-5p and miR-21 had their highest expres

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an Effective Indicator for Screening of Quorum Sensing Inhibition by Plant Extracts
...Show More Authors

Quorum sensing is a well-known mechanism used by many bacteria to control important virulence factors through the production and subsequent response to N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs). Quorum sensing inhibition (QSI), targeting AHL-dependent signalling, has been reported as a strategy for the control of bacterial pathogenicity. Thus, this study aimed at investigating the capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa as an indicator to rapidly screen for potential QSI caused by plant extracts based on pigment inhibition. Four ethanolic plant extracts including: dried flower buds of clove (Syzygium aromaticum L), bark of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia L), leaves of moringa (Mo

The aim of the study is to evaluate the phytochemical and morphological characterization between Iraqi and America Lanata camara extracts and to evaluate their inhibition effect on the egg albumin-induced paw inflammation. Successive maceration was used to eliminate the leaves of L. camara. The bioactive substance components present in the extract were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. In addition, HPLC analysis was performed for the detection of active compounds. The paw edema induced by injecting egg albumin (0.1ml) in both right and left hind-paw and the percentage inhibition as well as cell count, and skin thickness was measured. The initial phytochemical screening yielded positive test

In Vitro Efficacy of Silver Carbene Complexes, SCC1 and SCC22, Against Some Enteric Animal Pathogens
...Show More Authors

Silver carbene complexes (SCCs), a group of novel silver-based compounds capable of gradually releasing silver ions, have shown significant antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacterial pathogens mainly isolated from human cases. The antimicrobial activity against animal isolated pathogens has yet been done. The in vitro efficacy of two SCCs with different carrier molecules (SCC1 with a methylated caffeine backbone and SCC22 with a dichloroimidazolium backbone) was investigated against three important animal and human pathogen species. SCC1 and SCC22 exhibited bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects against multidrug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium (poultry isolate), E. coli 843 and E. coli 1568 (swine isolates), and the poul

Newcastle disease is one of serious pathological problems and causes of vast economic losses during 2011-2016 in Iraq. The disease caused high mortalities in all types of poultry nevertheless of vaccination. In this study all samples were collected from infected flocks with clinical signs of the disease. Inoculation of chicken embryonated eggs was carried out for virus isolation, identification, Haemagglutination and Haemagglutination Inhibition assay. Using Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction to confirm the presence of the virus, Intra Cerebral Pathogenicity Index and Mean Death Time were used to confirm all the isolates that were velogenic. Ovine and caprine babesiosis is a significant tick-borne disease affecting small ruminants, causing economic losses and health challenges in endemic regions such as northern Iraq. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, molecular characteristics, and associated risk factors of Babesia spp. infections in small ruminants in Erbil Province, Iraq. A total of 235 animals (125 sheep and 110 goats) were clinically examined and sampled between October 2024 and March 2025. Blood smears were screened microscopically, and DNA was extracted from the blood sample collected for molecular detection. PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia spp., B. ovis, and B. motasi was carried out

Comparison of the Efficiency of Some Non-Thermal Techniques in Detoxifying Aflatoxin B1, Ochratoxin A, and Fumonisin B1 from Feeds of Poultry
...Show More Authors

Atmospheric pressure corona discharge (APCD), ultraviolet C with ozone (UVC w/ O3), and plasma treated water (PTW) have lately been spotlighted in the food industry as non-thermal techniques (NTTs) for detoxifying mycotoxins, due to their unique features. The efficiency of these techniques in detoxifying aflatoxin B1 (Afla B1), ochratoxin A (Ochra A), and fumonisin B1 (Fum B1) in feeds of poultry and their effects on quality of feed were inspected. Samples of feed were subjected to APCD, UVC w/ O3, and PTW for 10, 20, and 60 min. Mycotoxin concentrations were determined by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and outcomes were verified by high-performance liquid chromatogr

In Silico Discovery of Novel Drug and Vaccine Targets in Chlamydia abortus Through Subtractive Genomics

Chlamydia abortus is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes chlamydiosis, a zoonotic disease leading to abortions and stillbirths in livestock and posing significant public health risks. With rising antimicrobial resistance and limited treatment efficacy, there is a pressing need for novel, targeted therapeutics to mitigate its economic and zoonotic impact. This study employed a subtractive genomics approach to analyze the complete proteome of C. abortus (strain DSM 27085 / S26/3), aiming to identify essential, non-host homologous proteins involved in unique bacterial metabolic pathways. Out of 932 proteins, five integral membrane proteins YidC, YajC, SecY, CAB503, and CAB746 were selected based

Effect of Feeder Modification and Feed Form on Feed Loss and Conversion Efficiency in Small-Scale Broiler Farms
...Show More Authors

Feed losses in broiler farms are negatively affecting the health and growth of broiler and thus reducing profitability. This study aimed to estimate feed loss in small-scale broiler farms using two modified conventional feeders, Trough and Tube feeders, and two different feed forms, Mash and Pellet. The experiment was carried out using non-modified feeders and modified by attaching a 4×4 cm protective net to Trough feeder and reducing length from 6 cm to 4 cm to Tube feeder. Results showed a very slight effect of feeder type on feed loss for the benefit of the Trough feeder. The feed losses were significantly noted (from 3.91% to 1.84% before and after modification, respectively) when feeding Mashed feed with T
