Background
Sildenafil has been used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). However it has the disadvantage of many visual disturbances. The aim of this work is to study the effect
of sildenafil on diabetic patients which might have ocular problems due to diabetes mellitus.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 30 subjects were enrolled in the study, they were divided into two groups. The control group consisted of 10 healthy subjects but complaining of ED only and the
other (20 patients) had diabetes mellitus and ED as well. All subjects had ocular tests done before and after sildenafil intake. It was obvious that sildenafil changed visual tests from totally normal for controls, before treatent, to visual abnormality in some of the tests after treatment, such as in colour Fac Med Baghdad sense , diplopia & intra ocular pressure ( IOP ).
Results:
While certain percentage of diabetic patients had visual disturbances even before sildenafil intake. The abnormalities were in visual acuity, visual field and, in fundus
appearance. Post – treatment led to increase the percentage of patients with already existing ocular problems and extend them to include some other new ones like change in colour
sense , diplopia and increased ( IOP ).
Conclusions:
Comparing the patient group with the control , pre – treatment tests revealed that diabetic patients had already pre – existing ocular problems due to diabetes such as in the
visual acuity , visual field which were statistically not significant ( p>0.05). The only significant (p<0.05) difference was in the fundus appearance. Post – treatment results indicated more ocular damage in diabetic patients as all tests were abnormal compared to control subjects. So, although not significant but ocular complications do exist and might cause unpredictable eye damage to certain percentage of patients which should be taken into consideration.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced as a result of biochemical processes that are not in balance with the body's antioxidant defense mechanism. This metabolic dysfunction is referred to the oxidative stress (OS). Metabolic dysfunction-associated diseases are affected by changes in the redox balance. It is now widely recognized that oxidative stress significantly affects diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly type 2 diabetes. The biochemical changes associated with DM could disturb the oxidative milieu, leading to several microvascular complications in diabetic patients. Thus, DM is a perfect disease to explore the harmful consequences of oxidative stress and how to treat it. Oxidative stress triggered by hyperglycemia is

Aldosterone has been shown for decades that a plasma aldosterone concentration is elevated in CKD. Whilst, Osteoprotegerin (OPG), after its capacity to protect bone, also osteoprotegerin is elevated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), where it could predict the deterioration of kidney function, cardiovascular, vascular events and all-cause mortality. On the other hand, fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), in patients with CKD, its levels seem to increase progressively as kidney function worsens. The aim of the present study is to assess the correlations between serum osteoprotegerin

Bone complications such asRA-relatedosteoporosis are one of the most extra-articular manifestations. Many inflammatory mediators are released during RA disease pathophysiology; these mediators stimulate osteoclast genesis of bone by direct effects on RANKL and OPG. The study aimedto measure RANKL, OPG in RA patients treated with Etanercept only and other groups treated with Methotrexate onlyat baseline and after three months to evaluate bone state. An observational case-control prospective study was done on 30 RA patients who received MTX, 30 RA patients who received ETN, and 30 healthy,age-matched control groups. The

Renoprotective effect of ACE inhibitors (ACEIs) varies among patients due to genetic variation, particularly in Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System genes. This study investigates the genetic variations of ACE I\D and AGT1RA1166C gene polymorphisms in the antiproteinuric effect of ACEI therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This is a cross-sectional study that included 76 T2DM patients who are ACEI users, divided into two groups: T2DM without diabetic kidney disease (DKD) included 31 patients, and T2DM with DKD included 45 patients. Urine samples were taken for measurement of urine albumin and creatinine, then calcul

Background: Osteoporosis is an extra-articular complication of rheumatoid arthritis that results in increased risk of fractures and associated morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Objective: To evaluate changes in bone mineral density in a sample of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients on biological (anti tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha) and non-biological agent disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Patients and Methods: A cross sectional study enrolled 60 RA patients diagnosed by rheumatologist according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism (2010 ACR/EULAR) classification criteria for RA. Thirty patient on biological agent (anti TNF alpha) and 30 patient on non-biological agent (D

Samples were collected from twenty patients of different ages (30 - 70 years old) ten males and ten females. The samples were collected from patients with the two types of diabetics. Specimens included blood, hair, nail, oral swabs and skin. Specimens were inoculated on Sabourauds Dextrose agar containing chloramphenicol. Thirteen fungal species were isolated and identified. The isolated species were: Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. terrus, A. nidulans, A. fumigatus, Candida albicans, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C.
