Summary

Abbas Fadhil received his Ph.D. in Comparative Politics from Rutgers University of New Jersey USA in 2019. His dissertation is titled “Voter Mobilization and Voter Turnout in Post-Authoritarian Countries: the case of Parliamentary Elections in Iraq (2005-2018) and was written under the supervision of Professor Eric Davis. He was born in Baghdad, Iraq where he spent most of his life under Saddam’s rule. After High school, he enrolled at the College of Political Science Baghdad University 1995 and received BA in 2001 and MA in 2005. Before traveling to the USA to pursue his advanced studies in 2014, he was awarded a Ph.D. scholarship full-funded by the Iraq Government which is one of the most competitive scholarship programs offered by Higher Committee of Education Development in Iraq (HCED). In 2013, he was awarded fellowship in Civic Education and Leadership at Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affair at Syracuse University. The sponsor of this fellowship program was the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the State Department. He has also been awarded fellowships and grants from Silas Palmer Fellowship/Research Funds, Hoover Library & Archives at Stanford University (2018) and pre-APSA Workshop Securing Elections; from Royal Military College of Canada (Kingston) (2019).

Research Interests

democratic transition in post authoritarian countries with special emphasis on elections, the interaction between formal and informal institutions, clientelism and vote-buying, patronage, security sector reform , corruption in the MENA region
