Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: A retrospective study of clinical and pathological features
...Show More Authors

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), is one of the myeloproliferative disorders with a characteristic cytogenetic abnormality resulting in the BCR-ABL fusion gene. Imatinib Mesylate is an effective agent for treating patients in all stages of CML. According to the annual Iraqi cancer registry 2019, the total number of chronic myeloproliferative disorders was 338. The percentage and incidence rates were 0.94% and 0.86%, respectively, with a higher incidence rate in males than females (1.12 in males and 0.60 in females). In this registry, no details about CML, so this study aimed to estimate the number of CML patients who attended the national center of hematology from 2005 until 2020 and investigate their epidemiological and clinic-pathological data. All data were obtained from the National Center of Hematology /Baghdad. Data regarding annual admission, number of deaths, and information about age, regions, and sex, were collected from patient cards. Interview and history taking from the patient and reviewing their clinical features at diagnosis were performed, and then statistical analysis was achieved. Two hundred sixteen patients were registered as CML; among them, 163 are still alive, while 53 died. The mean age at diagnosis was 40.39 ±14.30, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.16. The pediatrics age group comprises 3.7% of total cases and 1.8 % and 9.4% in the alive and dead groups, respectively. The percentages of death were higher in the pediatric age group, 62,5%( 5 /8), followed by the patient group who were ≥60 years, 42.1%(8/19), while it was the least in adults < 60 years, 21.1% (40/189). In conclusion, the studied patients with CML were younger than the globally reported ages at diagnosis, with predominant female patients. Females had better survival, while children and the elderly were the worse. Most patients were symptomatic at diagnosis; however, a good outcome is achieved when treated with IM. Review Article: Tumor Markers, Types and Clinical Applications
...Show More Authors

Over the past ten years, tumor markers have played an increasingly important role in clinicaloncology. This trend is expected to continue as technology advances and our knowledge of thehuman body and disease processes grows. In the treatment of cancer, tumor markers are widelyused for a variety of purposes, including screening, selecting a management strategy, determining the prognosis, and post-therapy follow-up. A comprehensive of the fundamentalsof pathophysiology and identification strategies for each specific malignancy is necessary fortheir prudent application in clinical practice. Oncology's use of cancer biomarkers hastransformed the way that cancer is treated, and led to notable improvements in patient outcomesand cancer tre

Determination of Enzymatic Antioxidant in Iraqi Patients with Chronic Gastritis

Infection of the gastric mucosa with Helicobacter pylori is strongly associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Helicobacter pylori virulence factors include a variety of proteins that are involved in its pathogenesis, such as VacA and CagA. Another group of virulence factors is clearly important for colonization of H.pylori in the gastric mucosa. These include urease, motility factors (flagellin), and Superoxide dismutase (SOD). Because of this organism's microaerophilic nature and the increased levels of reactive oxygen in the infected host, we expect that other factors involved in the response to oxidative stress are likely to be required for virulence. Superoxide dismutase is a near

Clinical and Genetic Varieties of Gaucher Disease in Iraqi Children

Abstract<p>Gaucher disease (GD), which is due to a deficiency in the lysosomal enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase, is a rare genetic disorder. It is characterized by a wide variety of clinical manifestations and severity of symptoms, making it difficult to manage. A cross-sectional hospital-based genetic study was undertaken with 32 pediatric patients. We recruited 21 males and 11 females diagnosed with GD, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.91:1. The mean age of the study population was 8.79 ± 4.37 years with an age range from 8 months to 17 years. We included patients on clinical evaluation from 2011 to 2019. An enzyme assay test was used to measure β-glucosidase enzyme activity in leukocytes and the GBA gene s</p> ... Show More

Abstract<p>Renal failure is a disease of the kidney, in which the renal excretory function is failed to process due to depression of the GFR. Renal failure is divided into acute and chronic depending on the period of the disease. The study was designed to investigate the level of oxidative stress in RF patients. Seventy-five subjects had enrolled in the study, who divided into three groups equally, in which they are healthy control, ARF patients, and CRF patients. The results had shown a significant (P<0.01) increase in the level of TOS for RF patients when compared with control. Also, a significant difference in the level of TOS has been observed between ARF and CR</p> ... Show More

Improvement of electrical features of SnO2 based varistor doped with Al2O3
...Show More Authors

One of the important objectives of the varistor is for a sustainable environment and reduce the pollution resulting from the frequent damage of the electrical devices and power station waste. In present work, the influence of Al2O3 additives on the non –linear electrical features of SnO2 varistors, has been investigated, where SnO2 ceramic powder doped with Al2O3 in three rates (0.005, 0.01, and 0.05), the XRD test improved that SnO2 is the primary phase, while CoCr2O4, and Al2O3 represent the secondary phases. The electrical tests of all prepared samples confirmed that the increasing of Al2O3 rates and sintering temperature improves and increase the electrical features, where the best results obtained at Al2O3 (0.05) and 1000℃, the non

Molecular study of blaVEB-1 gene in Proteus mirabilis isolated from clinical Samples from Baghdad City’s hospitals
...Show More Authors

From different hospitals in Baghdad city, 25 clinical isolates of Proteus spp. were collected from different clinical samples, all isolates were identified as Proteus mirabilis by using bacteriological and biochemical assays in addition to Vitek-2 identification system. 15 (60%) isolates were identifying as Proteus mirabilis. The susceptibility of P. mirabilis isolates towards cefotaxime and ceftazidime was (66.6 %), (20%) consecutively; while extended spectrum β-lactamases producing P. mirabilis percentage was (30.7 %). Because blaVEB-1 was documented as an important indicator for increasing risk of extended spectrum beta ßlactamases producing P. mirabilis isolates that began to spread from many geographic area to Far east which inc

Augmentation of the localized bony defects with synthetic bone substitute in simultaneous dental implant surgery(Clinical study)
...Show More Authors

Background: Simultaneous and staged guided bone regeneration (GBR) is one of the several surgical techniques that have been developed in the past two decades to regenerate bone and thus to allow implant placement in compromised sites (fenestration and dehiscence). It is a surgical procedure that consists of the placement of a cell-occlusive physical barrier between the connective tissue and the alveolar bone defect. The treatment concept advocates that regeneration of osseous defects is predictably attainable via the application of occlusive membranes, which mechanically exclude non-osteogenic cell populations from the surrounding soft tissues, thereby allowing osteogenic cell populations originating from the parent bone to inhabi

Background. The presence of black triangles around the dental implant-supported prosthesis and the failure to construct adequate papillae around them bothers dental implantologists. Peri-implant surgical soft tissue management will improve esthetics, function, and implant survival. Aim. To compare the effects of rolled and nonrolled U-shaped flaps combined with a temporary crown in enhancing the soft tissue around dental implants. Materials and Methods. Forty patients were included in this study; all patients were operated on by the same maxillofacial surgeon at Al-Iraq specialized dental clinics from January 2019 to January 2020. Patients were divided randomly into two groups: group A: at the second stage of implant surgery, a U-sh
