أصبح استخدام الرياضة الدولية وبناء السلام موضوعًا دراسيًا مهمًا في القرن الحادي والعشرين، إذ نمت في السنوات الأخيرة الروابط بين الرياضة وحلّ النزاعات وبناء السلام بشكل كبير. مع عمل المنظمات الرياضية الدولية مثل اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية والاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم "فيفا" بشكل متزايد على دمج الرياضة كأداة لبناء السلام والترابط وحل النزاعات من خلال أدوارها السياسية والإنسانية، وتبني الرياضة كحركة نبيلة وكذلك كوسيلة للتعبير عن المثل الأخلاقية والجسدية العالية. إذ تتمتع كرة القدم بالقدرة على التواصل وتعزيز التقارب وحشد الجمهور حول عمل واسع النطاق، في بعض الأحيان بشكل أساسي في ظروف لا يمكن تفسيرها، إذ بينت هذا الدراسة الخلفية التاريخية للمنظمات الرياضية الدولية وتطور الرياضة من أجل التنمية والسلام كاستراتيجية للتدخل الاجتماعي وكمجال أكاديمي. واستنادًا إلى نظريات بناء السلام القائمة، إذ سعت هذه الدراسة إلى بيان دور اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية والاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم الفيفا في بناء السلام من خلال الرياضة وتوضيح الطرائق الإنسانية والسياسية التي قد تدعم بها الرياضة عمليات بناء السلام وحل النزاعات عن طريق عمل هذه المنظمات.
