Background: Diabetes mellitus has been suggested
to be the most common metabolic disorder
associated with magnesium deficiency, and because
available data suggest that adverse outcomes are
associated with hypomagnesemia, it is prudent that
routine surveillance for hypomagnesemia be done
and the condition be treated whenever possible.
Aim of the study:To explore the serum Mg
concentrations of diabetic patients and healthy
controls in our locality.
Mehtods: One hundred and forty four diabetic
patients (22 with type I and 122 with type II diabetes
mellitus) recruited from the outpatient diabetes clinic
at the Specialized Center For Endocrine DiseasesBaghdad (62 patients), National Diabetes Center-Al
Mustansiria University (20 patients), and from
private endocrinologic practice clinics in Baghdad
(62 patients), during the period from 1st October
2005 to 30th April 2006. Ninety non-diabetic healthy
controls matched for age and sex were participated in
this study. Exclusion criteria for both groups
included diarrhea and loop diuretics. None were
taking Mg supplements. Level of Mg and Albumin
were determined spectrophotometerically in the
same serum samples.
Results: Mean serum Mg concentrations of the
diabetics was significantly lower than in controls
(p<0.001). Serum albumin was not a significant
predictor of serum Mg neither among diabetic
patients (r = 0.005) nor control subjects (r = 0.139).
In 88.9% of the diabetic patients and 11.1% of the
control subjects serum Mg concentrations were
below the normal reference range of 0.70 mmol/L.
The prevalence is increased when hypomagnesemia
is defined by a reference limit of 0.75 mmol/L
(98.6% and 28.9 % for diabetics and controls,
respectively), a further higher prevalence among
controls (91.1 %) was noted when 0.80 mmol/L is
adopted as the lower normal limit. All diabetics
(100%) and controls (100%) were identified as
hypomagnesemic with a lower reference limit of
0.90 mmol/L.
Conclusion: The tremendous hot climate of ours,
can be suggested as an influential cause for increased
Mg losses, and may provide a coherent explanation
for the exceedingly high prevalence of
hypomagnesemia observed in diabetic and control
subjects participated in this study. Which therefore
may suggest an inevitable requirement for
magnesium supplementation to avert
hypomagnesemia, not only among diabetics, but as
well for controls, particularly through the hot
summer episode
A finite element is a study that is capable of predicting crack initiation and simulating crack propagation of human bone. The material model is implemented in MATLAB finite element package, which allows extension to any geometry and any load configuration. The fracture mechanics parameters for transverse and longitudinal crack propagation in human bone are analyzed. A fracture toughness as well as stress and strain contour are generated and thoroughly evaluated. Discussion is given on how this knowledge needs to be extended to allow prediction of whole bone fracture from external loading to aid the design of protective systems.
Background & objective: Difficult intubation remains a risk for patients undergoing general anesthesia (GA) or mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit (ICU). Macroglossia is a known factor for difficult intubation. But it is not routine to assess the tongue size to predict difficult intubation. Studies are found deficient in comparing usefulness of measuring thyromental distance and the tongue thickness (TT) measured by ultrasonography to estimate difficult intubation. We compared tongue thickness measured by ultrasonography and thyromental distance as a means to anticipate difficult intubation. Methodology: A convenient sample of 60 patients; 32 males and 28 females, who were undergoing elective surgery with GA were i

The phenomenon of poverty is one of the most serious problems that must be dealt with seriously. This phenomenon has persisted in Iraq for decades because of the harsh economic conditions and unstable security conditions due to the crises it has faced since 2013. This study requires much study and analysis. And rural areas as a special case. In this study, the researcher examined the poverty line as a criterion in estimating the poverty indicators, which include (poverty percentage H, poverty gap PG, poverty intensity PS), based on the continuous social and economic survey data for households in 2014. To achieve the research objectives, two main hypotheses have been formulated, the first of which is to find the extent of the li

The current study aimed to assess the antibacterial effect of M. oleifera L. and red pomegranate extracts and their combinations against Porphyromonas gingivalis. The antimicrobial sensitivity, minimum inhibition concentrations (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentrations after treatment with the aqueous extracts of M. oleifera L. and red pomegranate as well as their combination against clinically isolated P. gingivalis were determined using agar well diffusion and two-fold serial dilution. The anti-biofilm activity of the extracts and their combination was evaluat

Since WSNs have finite energy sources, there is ongoing research work to develop new strategies for minimizing power consumption or enhancing traditional techniques. In this paper, a novel Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) algorithm is proposed for mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs) for energy saving. Performance evaluation of the clustering process with the GMM algorithm shows a remarkable energy saving in the network of up to 92%. In addition, a comparison with another clustering strategy that uses the K-means algorithm has been made, and the developed method has outperformed K-means with superior performance, saving ener
