Le héros romantique est entre sa passion et fatalité dans le drame romantique

                         Dans Hernani, sa pièce la plus connue, Victor Hugo présente son drame qui a pour toile de fond l'Espagne du XVIe siècle. L'action se déroule à Saragosse où il s'agit d'une histoire d'amour; un personnage d'origine noble est tombé amoureux d'une fille qui s'appelle Doña Sol qui est aimée à la fois par le Duc, Don Ruy Gomez de Silva, et par le roi, Don Carlos ; mais c'est Hernani qu'elle aime passionnent. La rivalité amoureuse de ces trois personnages pour une même fille montre l'amour qui se trouve au cœur du drame romantique.

                 Hernani est la figure exemplaire du héros romantique : passionné, révolté, pauvre et grand, ange et démon à la fois, déchiré entre ses aspirations contradictoires. Il est le combattant de la fameuse bataille qui s'identifiait à son âme de malheur, un pouvoir monarchique qui l'a brisé. L'intrigue de la pièce repose sur le thème de la fatalité qui entraîne inéluctablement le héros vers le malheur et la mort. Hernani est victime d'une fatalité qui prend la forme d'une malédiction héréditaire et historique qui s'incarne dans le vieux duc et le roi.

                         Hernani est un drame en cinq actes et en vers. Elle est célèbre sous le nom de Bataille d'Hernani par le choix du sujet et de l'époque, par la qualité et le caractère des personnages, l'action, le dénouement et finalement le style, c'est le type du drame romantique.
