برز في بداية القرن الماضي اهتمام الباحثين في بعض دول العالم بجمع ودراسة الارث الموسيقي لشعوبهم من خلال ما اكتشفوه من دور لهذه الدراسات في تحديد الهوية الموسيقية لمبتكري ومؤدي ومتلقي هذا الارث .وقد قام كثير من الدول العالم وخصوصا في اوربا وامريكا بانشاء مراكز بحثية خاصة تعنى بجمع وحفظ وتصنيف وتحليل مواد ارثهم الشعبي ومن ثم تحديد سماته وخصائصه الموسيقيةاما في العراق وبرغم تعدد وتنوع اشكال التراث والموروث الموسيقي العراقي ، فان عملية جمعه بغية الحفاظ عليه من الضياع او الاندثار او التشويه ، او عملية تصنيفه او دراسته لمعرفة سماته ، لم تتم الا على مستوى منخفض ، وذلك من خلال دراسات تراوحت موضوعاتها بين تناول النظرية الموسيقية او سير حياة المغنيين او وصف طرق الغناء والموسيقى من الزاوية التاريخية ، اضافة الى دراسات متخصصة بدات في نهاية القرن المنصرم ارتبطت بحركة البحث العلمي الاكاديمي لطلبة الدراسالت العليا ، وهي في حقيقة الامر قليلة جدا ولاترقى من ناحية الكم الى المستوى المطلوب.لذا فان الحاجة تبرز بوضوح لدراسة اشكال التراث والموروث الموسيقي العراقي وفق وجهة نظر تحليلية يمكن من خلالها تحديد سماتها وخصائصها الموسيقية.ولتعدد الجوانب التي تمكن دراستها ضمن هذا السياق فان الباحث اختار مشكلة بحثه وحددها بالسؤال الاتي :ماهي السمات الموسيقية في البناء اللحني للردات الحسينية في محافظة كربلاء
