Means of Arguments in Bank's Annual Reports
...Show More Authors

In line with the most recent trends in genre analysis (Swales, 1990; Bahatia,
1993) and discourse studies on business communication (Dudley-Evans and St.
John, 1998;Bargiela-Chiappini, F. and C. Nickerson, 1999, the article focuses on a
particular financial genre, Bank's Annual Reports (ARs). More in detail, in contrast
in widespread claim about the purely financial and informative nature of ARs,
addressing experts only, this paper aims at illustrating in accordance with Bexley
and Hynes (2003), and Burrough's (1986) considerations, that those reports
endeavour to promote the company image and to leave a positive impression on
readers. Generally speaking, companies communicate because they exist: they have
a name, headquarters, offices, a logotype, and provide cosumers with products and
services that help people to come closer to the company's reality (Brioschi,
1990:51). However, another type of communication exists, this of argumentation: it
is essential to inform the public about the company's activity, to charge its mind
(Cantoni, Di Blas, 2002) and to it act in a certain way. Thus, argumentation aims at
convincing the counterpart that a thesis should (not) be accepted by using
reasonable arguments that impress the hearer/ reader. More specifically,
argumentation can be found in an extremely important economic and financial text:
the ARs. These are considered comprehensible not only to experts but also the
layman: they develop arguments that are within everyone's reach; they use plain
language and effective stylistic devices in order to be readable, to delight and
convince the public (Mignini, 2005:1).
(Some research so far has been based on the definition as well as the content
analysis of ARs, and on their writing's techniques and strategies, but few had taken
into account their argumentative stylistic features and discursive (in the sense of
other-than-purely-financial) sections.
There has been not much research focusing on argumentation in the economic
and financial world up-to-now; in this paper the researcher examines how
argumentation is carried on in banks ARs, what the most exploited topics are, and
how they are arranged to win the public over. A glance at the textual structure is
given first so as to have an idea about how the readers are introduced into the bank's
world. Then, an analysis of the most common topics and the way they are usually
presented (their argument) is provided: examples are also given in order to clarify
the content.

The corpus of material gathered for the analysis includes four Bank's ARs. All
the selected ARs are published on the web between 2003 and 2006 by the following
prestigious big banks: Deutsche bank (2003), Bank of England Annual Report
(2004), Raiffeisen Centrobank (2005), and Bank of America (2006).

Population Density of Bemisia tabaci on Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Varieties in the Greenhouse
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>We conducted an experiment in a greenhouse at the research station belonging to the Department of Plant Protection / Ministry of Agriculture, in Abu Ghraib area during the spring and autumn season 2022-2023, to study the population density of the whitefly on two varieties of sweet pepper plant (Charisma and Sierra Nevada). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design “RCBD” with three replicates for each variety. The results showed that in spring season the population density of B. tabaci eggs and nymphs reached the peak in the last week of May, which where 2.667 and 4.444 individual / leaf, respectively while the population density </p> ... Detection and Mineralization of Organic Pollutants in Mesopotamian Marsh Water Using a Batch Bioreactor
...Show More Authors
Introduction

This study investigated the detection and mineralization of organic pollutants in the Mesopotamian marshes.

Methods

Over the course of seven days of treatment, a batch bioreactor system and natural microbial communities from marsh sediments were able to break down contaminants in a remarkable way.

Results

Water samples collected from five distinct marsh locations revea

Spatiotemporal patterns of bifacial and monofacial photovoltaic energy potential in an arid climate zone
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>Climate change significantly affects photovoltaic (PV) energy potential in arid regions. This study quantifies climate change impacts on both monofacial and bifacial PV energy potential across Iraq using Community Climate System Model (CCSM4) projections under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios spanning 2020–2100. Specific mathematical frameworks accounting for thermal and irradiance characteristics were applied across 18 representative regions covering Iraq’s diverse climatic zones, with bifacial systems modeled using dual-surface irradiance capture incorporating ground reflection and thermal dynamics. Results reveal distinct northwest–southe</p> ... Show More

A Soil-Pile Response under Coupled Static-Dynamic Loadings in Terms of Kinematic Interaction
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>Although the axial aptitude and pile load transfer under static loading have been extensively documented, the dynamic axial reaction, on the other hand, requires further investigation. During a seismic event, the pile load applied may increase, while the soil load carrying capacity may decrease due to the shaking, resulting in additional settlement. The researchers concentrated their efforts on determining the cause of extensive damage to the piles after the seismic event. Such failures were linked to discontinuities in the subsoil due to abrupt differences in soil stiffness, and so actions were called kinematic impact of the earthquake on piles depending on the outcomes of laboratory</p> ... Treatment of Heavy Metal Pollution in Bahr Al-Najaf Water Using Green CuO Nanoparticles
...Show More Authors

The present study offered a straightforward, eco-friendly method for the green synthesis of nanoparticles, as it has gained significant attention in recent years. The study set out to demonstrate the bio-synthesis of nanoparticles using common plants such as Eruca sativa know as (jarjer) and Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum know as (korath) to produce copper oxides nanoparticles (CuO NPs) for treating the heavy metal pollution water of Baher Al-Najaf. The result shows the higher level in heavy metal was lead (Pb) 4.6184mg L-1   mg/l followed by the Chromium (Cr) 0.2892 mg L -1 and Cadmium (Cd) 0.1531 mg L-1 mg/l. the Eruca sativa show high efficiency of decreasing the concentration of Lead metal by dropping it to 1.2803 mg L-1, whi

Efficacy of Locally Applied K-Carrageenan on the Healing of Thermal Burn in Rat-Experimental Model: Histological Study
...Show More Authors

ABSTRACT Wound is damage or disruption to the normal anatomical structure and function. Carrageenan is sulphated polysaccharide found in Gigartina, Chondrus and Eucheuma species in the red algal family. Having anticancer, anti-inflammatory and renewal of tissues. Our study aimed to detect the role of kappa carrageenan in the burned skin wound repair. Skin burn were performed in the right and left cheek of 20 male rats (aged 7-8 weeks weighing 300-350 g). Burned skin rats were categorized into two equal groups. Burned areas of right side were treated with a local application of 1 ml of kappa carrageenan solution once daily (treatment group) and the left side receive no treatment (control group). After 5, and 10 days, 5 rats from each

...Show More Authors

A fully automatic electrothermal atomic emission spectrometry (ETA-AES) is described. This system is based on an echelle monochromator modified for wave¬length modulation which is completely controlled by microcomputer . The advantages of the system in atomic spectrometry have been discussed . Aspects of the analytical performances such as calibration ? dection limit, precision , and recovery for copper are considered . This system is applied for routine determination of copper in commercial powdered mill? by slurr>' atomization versus aqueous atomization techniques.
