The Image of the Soldier in Brendan Behan's The Hostage And Charles Fuller's A Soldiers Play: The Image of the Soldier in Brendan Behan's The Hostage And Charles Fuller's A Soldiers Play
...Show More Authors

Abstract
The image of the soldier, as a hero who sacrifices everything to defend his
country and values, is no longer depicted in modern drama. With two World Wars
and many regional wars and civil wars, the soldier becomes a victim, not a hero.
Authors present the character of the soldier as a man who suffers a lot as he is
victimized by his own government and its politics that forces him to be in such a
position. Dramatists express their views about race, oppression and war through
their characters, such as the character of the soldier, as in the two selected plays for
this research: The Hostage by Brendan Behan and A Soldier's Play by Charles
Fuller.
The Hostage depicts, through its events, the Irish oppression which makes
both the Irish and the English victims for this conflict. A Soldier's Play presents the
oppression which the blacks face daily in their society, a matter which creates
among them the oppressed and the oppressor.
An oppressed people demand that all their resources be put to the
service of liberating them, no matter what these resources are. Certainly art and
culture must be seen in such a light. Literature, as part of art is sometimes the
mirror of its society and people. Dramatists, in general, and Brendan Behan and
Charles Fuller, in particular, are aware of the value of the theatre as a tool for social
discussion, therefore; their characters no more assume limited quality, as they
assume a universal one.1
Berndan Behan's The Hostage, which lies in three acts, was first
presented by Theatre Workshop in 1958. It takes place in an old house in Dublin. It
is owned by Monsewer, an Englishman by birth, who is more fanatically Irish than
his entourage; Pat, who served with Monsewer in the civil war, is no longer fanatic.

The effect of tooth shape ratio on mandibular incisors arrangement in Iraqi adult subjects
...Show More Authors

Background: This study aimed to assess the effect of tooth shape ratio on mandibular incisor arrangement. Materials and methods: The sample included dental casts of some dental students and orthodontic patients having Class I dental and skeletal patterns with normal occlusion and severe crowding. The sample was divided into two groups according to the severity of crowding into: group I had Class I normal occlusion with mild or no crowded mandibular dentition and group II had Class I malocclusion with severe crowded mandibular dentition. Each group comprising of 40 subjects (20 males and 20 females). The mesio-distal and facio-lingual crown diameters were measured manually for each cast using modified vernier caliper gauge. Descriptive sta

Spatial quantile autoregressive model with application to poverty rates in the districts of Iraq
...Show More Authors

This research aims to provide insight into the Spatial Autoregressive Quantile Regression model (SARQR), which is more general than the Spatial Autoregressive model (SAR) and Quantile Regression model (QR) by integrating aspects of both. Since Bayesian approaches may produce reliable estimates of parameter and overcome the problems that standard estimating techniques, hence, in this model (SARQR), they were used to estimate the parameters. Bayesian inference was carried out using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. Several criteria were used in comparison, such as root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and coefficient of determination (R^2). The application was devoted on dataset of poverty rates acro

USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK TECHNIQUE FOR THE ESTIMATION OF CD CONCENTRATION IN CONTAMINATED SOILS
...Show More Authors

The aim of this paper is to design artificial neural network as an alternative accurate tool to estimate concentration of Cadmium in contaminated soils for any depth and time. First, fifty soil samples were harvested from a phytoremediated contaminated site located in Qanat Aljaeesh in Baghdad city in Iraq. Second, a series of measurements were performed on the soil samples. The inputs are the soil depth, the time, and the soil parameters but the output is the concentration of Cu in the soil for depth x and time t. Third, design an ANN and its performance was evaluated using a test data set and then applied to estimate the concentration of Cadmium. The performance of the ANN technique was compared with the traditional laboratory inspecting

Analyzing the Potential Antioxidative Effects of Omega-369 in Preventing Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Damage
...Show More Authors

Background: As acetaminophen (APAP) toxicity has become more common in many countries, related cases of poisoning, whether deliberate or unintentional, have been identified as a key contributor to acute liver failure. Aime: To discover if omega-369 fatty acids could protect the liver of male mice from the effects of acetamiophen. Methods: Thirty-five albino male mice were allocated to one of five groups at random. Group 1 served as the "negative control" and received a single intraperitoneal injection (10 ml/kg) of normal saline on the eleventh day of the test following ten days of receiving liquid paraffin orally at a dose of 10 ml/kg. The liquid paraffin was given to group 2 "positive control". Group 3 received Omega 369 (50 mg/kg

Evaluating newer herbicides on the performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Central Iraq
...Show More Authors

Due to the great losses caused by weeds to the crop, it is necessary to continue testing new herbicides that may be more efficient than the herbicides used that can reduce competition between weeds and crops, Therefore, a field experiment was carried out in the experimental field of the Department of Field Crops, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad (Al-Jadriya) during the winter season of 2021-22 in order to evaluate the efficiency of the herbicide H-199 and compare it with some herbicides used in controlling companion weed to three cultivars of wheat and its effect in the yield and its components. The experiment was applied according to the randomized complete block design with split-plot arrangement

The Correlation of Serum Periostin Level with Disease Severity in Patients with Covid -19
...Show More Authors

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by the new respiratory virus SARS-CoV2. It has a tropism in the lung tissues where excess target receptors exist. Periostin plays a role in subepithelial fibrosis associated with bronchial asthma. Since the Coronavirus's target is the human respiratory system, Periostin has been recently described as a valuable new biomarker in the diagnosis and evaluation of disease in patients with COVID-19 lung involvement. Objectives: To assess the level of Periostin in the serum of COVID-19 patients and to correlate its role in disease severity and prognosis. Subjects and Methods: Periostin serum levels were measured for 63 patients attending three main COVID

The Effect of Using Reciprocal Teaching on Improving College Students' Achievement in Reading Comprehension
...Show More Authors

Reciprocal Teaching is an interactive method that is used to improve reading comprehension. Using this teaching strategy, teachers and students take turns leading discussions regarding sections of text using the four strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing. This study is an attempt to investigate the effect of using reciprocal teaching on improving female college students' achievement in reading comprehension. To fulfill the aim of the study, the researcher has adopted two null hypotheses: first, there is no significant difference between the achievement of students' who practice the reciprocal teaching technique and that of students who do not practice it. Second, there is no statistically significant difference

In this work, we construct projectively distinct (k,3)-arcs in the projective plane PG(2,9) by applying a geometrical method. The cubic curves have been been constructed by using the general equation of the cubic. We found that there are complete (13,3)-arcs, complete (15,3)-arcs and we found that the only (16,3)-arcs lead to maximum completeness
