Association between anti-CMV IgG and salivary levels of IL‐6 and TNF-α in chronic periodontitis
...Show More Authors

Background: Periodontitis is an infection attributable to multiple infectious; it causes an interrelated cellular and humoral host immune responses. Recent reports have indicated that human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) may contribute to pathogenesis of periodontitis. The HCMV can stimulate the release of cytokines from inflammatory and non-inflammatory cells and weaken the periodontal immune defense. This study aimed to reveal the presence of anti-CMV IgG, and determine the levels of IL‐6 and TNF-α and to correlate the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) with cytokines levels. Materials and Methods: Forty patients with chronic periodontitis and 40 healthy control subjects (their age and sex were matched with the patients) were involved in this study. Periodontal parameters used in this study included plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP). Saliva samples were taken from all subjects. ELISA was carried out to estimate the levels of anti-CMV IgG, IL‐6 and TNF-α. Statistical tests used involved t-test, Mann-Whitney, Chi-square, Fisher exact and spearman's correlation test. Results: This study found a significant difference (p<0.05) in the frequency of anti-CMV IgG in saliva between patients and controls. The number and percentage of patients group who had positive for anti-CMV IgG were 14 (35%), while controls were 5 (12.5%). A significant increase was found in mean of PPD, CAL and BOP among patients with the positive IgG as compared to those patients with the negative IgG. In addition, there was a significant elevation in the salivary levels of IL‐6 and TNF-α in patients compared with healthy controls. IL- 6 was significantly associated with GI and BOP, whereas TNF-α was significantly associated with PPD and CAL. On the other hand, there was a significant correlation between TNF-α and anti- CMV IgG. Conclusion: The findings revealed that the significant association between the presence of virus with periodontal parameters and cytokines level in patients group gives additional evidence toward the potential importance of the direct and indirect effects of CMV infection in periodontitis. Keywords: Periodontitis, Anti- CMV IgG, Cytokines.

In-vivo and In-vitro Anti-Acinetobacter Baumannii Activity of Citrate-Capped Silver Nanoparticles
...Show More Authors

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are of potential interest because of their effective antibacterial and antiviral activities. Capping agents are used for exhibiting a better antibacterial activity than uncapped Ag NPs. There are very few reports that have shown the usage of AgNPs for in-vivo antibacterial therapy. Citrate-capped silver nanoparticles were synthesized chemically by citrate reduction method; the size of Cit-AgNPs was determined by an atomic force microscope (AFM) and was between 15-90 nm. Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) isolates were the only sensitive species to Cit-AgNPs. MICs and MBC of Cit-AgNPs were determined by using A. baumannii. The results showed an additive effect of Cit-AgNPs. Four mice groups were infected with

Effect of Partial Substitution of Lanthanum (La) on the Structural and Electric Properties of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3xLaxO10+δ
...Show More Authors

In the current study, we investigate the effect of  (La) substitution  instead of (Cu) on the properties of the superconductor compound  (Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3-xLaxO10+δ)  with (x=0,0.05,0.1,0.15,0.2). The samples were  prepared  by solid state reaction method(SSR). Xray diffraction technique (XRD) was used to estimate the structural  properties of the specimens which show an orthorhombic crystalline structure for all the specimens.       The results show that the change in ( La) concentration  leads to decrease the concentration of (Bi-2223), increment in (Bi-2212 ) and(Bi-2201) with appearance of some impurities. Also decrease the critical temperature(Tc) with the increase

Time-Trend Analysis of Bladder Cancer and its Association with Bilhariziasis in Egypt
...Show More Authors

Background: Both bladder cancer and schistosomiasis are endemic in Egypt. The former has a unique epidemiological pattern, which has been linked to bladder infestation by Schistosoma. The last decades have witnessed a great reduction in the infection rate of schistosomiasis and a decline in the incidence and changes in the patterns of bladder cancer. Whether these changes are linked to each other or a co-incidence is a subject of investigations.

Method: Literature on epidemiological data of bladder cancer and Schistosoma in Egypt was searched for in Medline, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Furthermore, a hand search for literature and reports released by the Egyptian government and involved agencies was perfo
