Captopril versus enalapril in the protection of the gastric mucosa against NSAID induced gastric mucosal injury in rats
...Show More Authors

Background: Different mechanisms have been suggested for the development of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) induced gastropathy. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors have been suggested to have gastroprotective effects. This study investigates the gastroprotective effects of Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, captopril and enalapril on indomethacin induced gastric mucosal damage in rats .
Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 50 adult male albino rats, divided into 5 groups, the first served as a control received the vehicle , the second received indomethacin orally of 60mg/kg. The third and fourth groups were pretreated orally 30 minute prior indomethacin with either captopril or enalapril. In order to study the possible role of nitric oxide (NO) in the gastroprotective effect of captopril; intraperitoneal NG-L-Arginine Methyl Ester (L-NAME) a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor was given 30 minutes prior to captopril administration followed by indomethacin and this served as fifth group. The rats were then sacrificed after 4 hours and their stomachs were isolated and submitted to macroscopical assessment and for the measurement of the gastric prostaglandinE2 (PGE2), and myeloperoxidase (MPO).
Results: Captopril in a dose of 15 mg/kg produced a significant reduction (p <0.05) in the gastric damage score .These protective effects were associated with a significant increase (p <0.05) in gastric PGE2 levels and marked decrease (p <0.05) in MPO activity, L-NAME pretreatment didn't abrogate the effects of captopril. Enalapril pretreatment failed to show the gastroprotective effects of captopril.
Conclusions: The prophylactic use of captopril in this study prevented indomethacin induced gastropathy .This protective effect was associated with PGE2 upregulation and decreased oxyradical generation reflected by a decrease in MPO activity .Enalapril failed to produce the gastroprotective effects of captopril.

Development of Anti-bodies against Infliximab in Iraqi Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
...Show More Authors

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a common chronic and destructive autoimmune arthropathy .Treatment with infliximab gives great improvement to a large numbers of patients with RA ,however, in some patients after prolonged treatment infliximab can induce anti-infliximab antibodies formation and result to loss of infliximab efficacy and active persistent disease.
Objective: to investigate the frequency of anti-infliximab antibodies in Iraqi patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Patients and methods: fifty Iraqi RA patients(36 females and 14 males) compared with 50 control( 25 healthy control and 25 case control (patients with RA on other treatment) ) were included in this study from begging of March 201

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common endocrine disorder affecting 6-10% of women of reproductive age and the most common cause of anovulatory infertility. Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness, side effects and outcomes of step-up gonadotrophin protocol versus laparoscopic ovarian diathermy (LOD) in infertile patients with clomiphene citrate resistant polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods:  The sample included women who attended our infertility clinic at Al-Elwiya Maternity Teaching Hospital and Kamal Al-Samarraee for Infertility and IVF Hospital in Baghdad/ Iraq from November 2013 to November 2014.    Eighty cases of infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who failed t

Age Related Changes in Cardiovascular Response to Oxidative Stress Induced by Exercise
...Show More Authors

Background:
There are many circulatory changes that occur during exercise in order to supply the tremendous blood flow required by the muscles during the stimulatory effects on circulation
by the mass sympathetic discharge, the increased arterial pressure and cardiac output. The metabolic effects and the oxidative stress as a result of the work load on cardiac and skeletal
muscles could also show changes.
Objective:
This study was designed to investigate the effects of aging process on the vascular response during exercise and also in the oxidative stress according to age.
Subjects and Methods:
Eight healthy Iraqi subjects were enrolled in this study. Divided into three groups according to a

Serum Biomarkers are Promising Tools to Predict Traumatic Brain Injury Outcome
...Show More Authors

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is still considered a worldwide leading cause of mortality and morbidity. Within the last decades, different modalities were used to assess severity and outcome including Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), imaging modalities, and even genetic polymorphism, however, determining the prognosis of TBI victims is still challenging requiring the emerging of more accurate and more applicable tools to surrogate other old modalities

Study on the anti-microbial effect of Sinigrin against some pathogenic bacterial species
...Show More Authors

The increasing anti-bacterial drug resistance is one of the biggest challenges facing doctors around the globe, so finding alternative treatments is one of the ideal options to overcome this problem. The cruciferous family is one of the wealthiest plants worldwide because it contains the most important secondary metabolites, glucosinolates, known for their anti-microbial properties. The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-bacterial effect of glucosinolates (Sinigrin) against eight bacterial isolates (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Actinomyces, Proteus mirabilis and Streptococcus pneumoniae). The current study investigated six concentrations of pure
