Objectives: Severe head injury is the most devastating neurosurgical condition and it is only next to cancers as the leading cause of death in developed countries.
Because trace elements (TEs) are involved in most of enzymes that drives the biochemical reactions, so they are considered as a window to the biochemical
environment of the body in general and in brain in specific.
Aim of the Study: This study measured six TEs (Fe, Zn, Mg, Cu, Mn and Co) in 29 patients with severe head injury (GCS Score 3-9); their ages between 5-50 years.
Collection and estimation performed at both Neurosurgical Hospital (NH) in Baghdad and Medical Research Center (MRC) of College of Medicine, Kadhimiyah between January 2004 and August 2004. 17 of healthy Iraqi volunteers of age- and sex- matched were used as a comparable control group in TEs measurement.
Results: The analysis showed that serum Cu level has a striking significant positive correlation with GCS (P<0.01) followed by serum Mg (P<0.01), serum Fe
(P<0.05) with mode of correlation is linear except for that of serum Fe has three phases of correlation. Serum Mg is the only TE showed statistical significant lower value in patient group than the control group (P<0.01). Zn is the only TE that is correlated with the mode of intake, significantly lower among patient on IVF than those on N/G (P<0.01). Serum zinc correlated in linear relation with serum Mg (P<0.05), serum Fe with serum Mg (P<0.05).
The present study aimed at shed light on the association between HLA-class I antigens (A, B and Cw) and brain tumours (meningioma and glioma) in the basis of their individual frequencies or two-locus association A total of 52 brain tumour patients were enrolled in this study, with an age range of 7-68 years. The patients were divided into two clinical groups; meningioma (20 cases) and glioma (22 cases), while the remaining 10 cases represented other types of brain tumour. Control samples included 47 Iraqi Arab apparently healthy blood volunteers, with an age range of 15-50 year. Three HLA antigens showed a significant increased frequency in total patients as compared to controls. They were B13 (34.6 vs. 6.5%), B40 (15.4 vs. 2.2%) and Cw3

Patients and methods: 75 cardiac patients were admitted to the coronary care unit, Baghdad Teaching Hospital over the period October 2008-May 2009 with the clinical diagnosis of acute
coronary syndrome and STEMI myocardial infarction their ages range was (25-82) years the number of male was (55) (73.3%) and female was (20) (26.7%). All cases have routine ECG, cardiac marker’s measurements, routine haematological, Biochemical test and 2mls of blood reserved for HLA study.
Results: It was found that H
Background; determining what radiologic studies to obtain following the diagnosis of a urinary tract infection(uti) is an area of medicine that is still not agreed upon, nor is there a gold standard.
Objective; to study the radiological abnormalities in paediatric patients with urinary tract infections.
Patients and methods; this prospective study was done from the first of june 2008 to the first of may 2009 include 104 pediatric patients who were referred to children welfare hospital ,(pediatric nephrological out patient clinic) with signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections, all of them had culture positive urine examination , ultrasonograhy was done for all patients, voiding cystouretherography was done for patients with re
Background: The accumulation of the lipid in the vascular smooth muscle cell within the arterial intima is a key process of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a degenerative disease of blood vessels leading to stroke.
Materials & Methods. One hundred and ten patients with acute stroke were included in this study 88 patients with ischaemic or infarction stroke and 22 patients with hemorrhagic type ) as well as thirty apparently normal healthy subjects as controls.
Results.Triglycerides levels and AI only were statistically significant in ischaemic type of stroke (P<0.005) while other lipid fractions were similar to the control values.
Conclusion: Acute stroke patients (infarction type) had significantly
Backgrond: One of the major causes of impaired movements post-stroke is the abnormal phasing of paralytic muscles. Many studies suggested that inappropriate muscle phasing may be associated with enhanced transmission in the monosynaptic Group Ia afferent pathway in the affected limb of post-stroke patients and Group Ia reflexes are abnormally elevated and fail to decrease in amplitude during locomotion.
Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the changes in the Soleus muscle H-reflex excitability at rest in the affected lower limb of post-stroke patients as compared to the contra lateral side and of normal controls.
Patients and methods: The excitability of the m

Prolongation of prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time and reduced levels of coagulation factors and natural anticoagulants have been variously described though the mechanisms involved in the thrombotic tendency seen in some Thalassemia patients have not been fully clarified.
Objectives: To investigate changes in the coagulation profile in patients with B-Thalassemia according to the available hemostatic parameters in Thalassemia patients in Al-Karama Teaching Hospital in Wasit governorate.
Methods: Hemostatic variables were studied in pre-transfusion blood samples from 50 transfusion-dependent children with Beta Thalassem
Background: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is considered the most serious consequence of cervical spondylosis and accounts for the majority of non_traumatic paraparesis and/or quadriparesis. The electrical property of the spinal cord and its susceptibility to injuries renders electrophysiology relevant to the management of CSM. Somatosensory evoked potentials study (SEPs) is an objective assessment of the functional integrity of the neural pathway.
Objective: Utilizing both of the median and the posterior tibial SEPs in evaluating the functional integrity of the cervical spinal cord in patients with CSM and to correlate the SEPs findings with the clinical and MRI findings.
Patients and methods: Twenty two patients with CSM (
The aim of this study is to estimate the survival function for the data of lung cancer patients, using parametric methods (Weibull, Gumbel, exponential and log-logistic).
Comparisons between the proposed estimation method have been performed using statistical indicator Akaike information Criterion, Akaike information criterion corrected and Bayesian information Criterion, concluding that the survival function for the lung cancer by using Gumbel distribution model is the best. The expected values of the survival function of all estimation methods that are proposed in this study have been decreasing gradually with increasing failure times for lung cancer patients, which means that there is an opposite relationshi
