Estimation of Groundwater recharge by groundwater level fluctuation method of Dibdibba aquifer at ‎Karbala- Najaf plateau, central of Iraq

Groundwater recharge estimation is essential for management of groundwater systems.  As groundwater is a vital source of water for domestic and agricultural activities in the study area (Karbala - Najaf plateau), ‎where the Dibdibba aquifer represents the primary and essential aquifer, evaluation of groundwater recharge is critical in the study area. A wide range of methodologies exists for estimating recharge.‎ ‎The water-table fluctuation method strategy might be the most generally utilized system for estimating recharge; it requires learning of changes in water levels over time and specific yield. Advantages of this approach include its simplicity and an insensitivity to the mechanism by which water moves through the unsaturated zone. Sensitiveness in measures created by this technique relates to the compelled precision with which ‎specific yield can be calculated and to the degree to which assumptions inherent in the strategy are ‎valid. The primary objective of this study is to calculate the annual and monthly ‎values of recharge for Jan. 2010 ‎through Aug. ‎‎2017‎ for Dibdibba aquifer at Karbala - Najaf plateau, central of Iraq to use results in the management of groundwater in the study area later‎. ‎Water levels measured in four observation wells in the study area, measurements were taken daily at the ‎middle of the night automatically by using modern electronic devices installed on the wells (from 10 BM to 4 AM) to avoid the effect of pumping ‎activity on the water ‎levels and to neutralize the effect of evapotranspiration for Jan. 2010 to Aug. 2017‎.

Estimating of groundwater age and quality of Al-Shanafiya Area Southwest Iraq

The study area is located to the south of Iraq at Al-Shanafiya town, south west of Iraq. Groundwater is the main source for crops irrigation, household uses and livestock drinking. To determine the relative age of groundwater by measuring the tritium concentration in groundwater, four wells and four springs water samples were taken. Found that the mean tritium concentration in springs samples is 4.125 TU where in wells samples is 2 TU. Using Clark and Firtz (1997) classification found that the relative age is amix of sub modern and modern water. Through modern study was performed by Al-Paruany (2013) found that the tritium concentration in rainfall in Al-Diwaniyah Meteoric Station has reached the natural level (approximately 5TU). Throug

Hydrochemical Evaluation of Groundwater from Selected Wells in Al Muthana Governorate, Southern Iraq

The study area is part of the city of Samawa in Al Muthanna Governorate in southern Iraq. The study  area is located to the west of Samawa city bounded by the north latitudes 31⁰11'-31o42' and east longitudes 44o58'- 45⁰16'and its groundwater resources are developed for supply and irrigation purposes. In order to evaluate the quality of groundwater in the study area, twenty three groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for physical and chemical parameters. Hydrochemical analysis showed that the groundwater of the study area is excessively mineralized  and very hard. The increase in flow length of groundwater in the study area caused a change in water

GIS Approach for Spatial Distribution Analysis of Groundwater Quality at South-West Part of Basrah

Water is necessary for sustainable development and healthy society.  Groundwater, often, is not sufficient and protected for direct human consumption. Due to increase in the density of population the requirement of water is increasing.  In this work, the assessment of groundwater quality was conducted in the south-west part of Basrah province. Spatial variations in the quality of groundwater in the study area have been analyzed utilizing GIS technique. The geochemical parameters of groundwater samples including pH, EC, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, HCO3, SO4, and NO3 were assessed in this study. Information maps of the study area have been actually prepared to make use of the GIS spatial

Groundwater protection from cadmium contamination by zeolite permeable reactive barrier

This work studies the performance of zeolite permeable reactive barrier in removing cadmium from a contaminated shallow aquifer. Batch tests have been performed to characterize the equilibrium sorption properties of the zeolite in cadmium-containing aqueous solutions. A 1D numerical finite difference model has been developed to describe pollutant transport within groundwater taking pollutant sorption on the permeable reactive barrier (PRB), which is performed by Langmuir equation, into account. Numerical results show that the PRB starts to saturate after a period of time (~120 h) due to reduction of the retardation factor, indicating a decrease in the percentage of zeolite functionality. However, a reasonable agreement between model predict

Evaluation of Tiger-Therthar channel and groundwater on the quality of Tigris river water at meeting point

This study was done to find the effect of Tigris-Therthar channel on the water quality of Tigris River to face the climate change which causes decreasing in water resources, in addition to decreasing in its quality. Nine stations were chosen located on Tigris River, Tigris-Therthar channel, Groundwater, and Therthar lake. The results indicated that the TDS increased in summer season, and the effect of Tigris-Therthar cannel was limited, also the effect of groundwater was limited, but there was an indication refers of possibility of increasing these effects on the quality of water. The study recommends observing the Tigris River through a programme to identify any change in water in future.

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY USING WATER QUALITY INDEXIN, AL-HAWIJA AREA, NORTHERN IRAQ

The quality of groundwater in the Al-Hawija area was assessed using a water quality index. Data of nine physico-chemical parameters of 28 groundwater wells were used to calculate the water quality index (WQI). A heterogeneous water quality was reported, where in close proximity to the Lesser Zab River (LZR), it has low WQI values and permissible for human consumptions due to the dilution processes by fresh water; whereas, it becomes deteriorated in areas located far away the river. The values of WQI ranges from 22 to 336, indicating a good to very poor groundwater quality.

Remediation of Groundwater Contaminated with Copper Ions by Waste Foundry Sand Permeable Barrier

The permeable reactive barrier (PRB) is one of the promising innovative in situ groundwater remediation technologies, in removing of copper from a contaminated shallow aquifer. The 1:1- mixture of waste foundry sand (WFS) and Kerbala’s sand (KS) was used for PRB. The WFS was represented the reactivity material while KS used to increase the permeability of PRB only. However, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis proved that the carboxylic and alkyl halides groups are responsible for the sorption of copper onto WFS. Batch tests have been performed to characterize the equilibrium sorption properties of the (WFS+KS) mix in copper- containing aqueous
solutions. The sorption data for Cu+2 ions, obtained by batch experiments, have be

The Effect of Climate Changes on The Fluctuation of The Water Level of Al- Razzaza Lake, Iraq

One of the serious environmental challenges that Iraq faces is climate changes and impacts of changing weather patterns and extreme global weather events. This paper addresses changes in the temporal and spatial characteristics of water levels of Razzaza Lake and response to climatic changes using archived series of Multispectral satellite images Landsat. TM, ETM+ and OLI images acquired on 1990, 2000 and of 2016. In order to extract, mapping the water surface area of the Razzaza Lake, Multispectral spectral band rationing the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) technique was adopted, and the climatic elements data for the period (1990-2016) were analyzed which provide significant information of surfac
