Epileptic Seizures Detection Using DCT-II and KNN Classifier in Long-Term EEG Signals
...Show More Authors

Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases of the nervous system around the world, affecting all age groups and causing seizures leading to loss of control for a period of time. This study presents a seizure detection algorithm that uses Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT) type II to transform the signal into frequency-domain and extracts energy features from 16 sub-bands. Also, an automatic channel selection method is proposed to select the best subset among 23 channels based on the maximum variance. Data are segmented into frames of  one Second length without overlapping between successive frames. K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) model is used to detect those frames either to ictal (seizure) or interictal (non-seizure) based on Euclidean distance. The experimental results are tested on 21 patients included in the CHB-MIT dataset. The average F1-score was found to be 93.12, whereas the False-Positive Rate (FPR) average was determined to be 0.07.

Molecular Detection of Human Herpes Virus-8 in Prostatic Adenocarcinoma and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Tissues by DNA -In Situ Hybridization
...Show More Authors

Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8) is a sexually transmitted viral infection that can infect the prostate epithelium in immunocompromised adults. Recently, HHV-8 was related to the development and progression of several human malignancies like prostatic adenocarcinoma. This retrospective research was designed to analyze the distribution and possible impact of HHV-8 infection on prostatic adenocarcinogenesis. A total number of one hundred formalin-fixed prostatic tissues were enrolled in this research; forty Prostate Adenocarcinoma (PAC) biopsies, forty biopsies from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), and twenty Apparently Normal Prostatic Tissues (ANPT) as a control group. Detection of HHV -8 DNA was achieved by a highly-sensitive variant of

Gravity Field Interpretation for Major Fault Depth Detection in a Region Located SW- Qa’im / Iraq
...Show More Authors

This research deals with the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of Bouguer gravity anomaly data for a region located to the SW of Qa’im City within Anbar province by using 2D- mapping methods. The gravity residual field obtained graphically by subtracting the Regional Gravity values from the values of the total Bouguer anomaly. The residual gravity field processed in order to reduce noise by applying the gradient operator and 1st directional derivatives filtering. This was helpful in assigning the locations of sudden variation in Gravity values. Such variations may be produced by subsurface faults, fractures, cavities or subsurface facies lateral variations limits. A major fault was predicted to extend with the direction NE-

A nonlinear edge –preserving smoothing filter for edge detection on color and gray satellite images
...Show More Authors

A nonlinear filter for smoothing color and gray images
corrupted by Gaussian noise is presented in this paper. The proposed
filter designed to reduce the noise in the R,G, and B bands of the
color images and preserving the edges. This filter applied in order to
prepare images for further processing such as edge detection and
image segmentation.
The results of computer simulations show that the proposed
filter gave satisfactory results when compared with the results of
conventional filters such as Gaussian low pass filter and median filter
by using Cross Correlation Coefficient (ccc) criteria.

Evaluation of Case detection rates of Pulmonary Tuberculosis before and after adoption of GeneXpert MTB/RIF
...Show More Authors

Cities witnessing mass-gathering events, such as Kerbala-Iraq, are peculiar in respect to their needs in controlling tuberculosis. DOTS was implemented in Kerbala almost two decades ago. GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay is adopted in the hope to escalate case detection rates, however, its performance is not evaluated yet. Records of 3254 patients suspected to have pulmonary TB whom they referred to the chest and Respiratory illnesses center of Kerbala governorate were analyzed. The overall trends of TB detection rates showed declining pattern over the year before the adoption of GeneXpert MTB/RIF. In the year of adoption of Xpert MTB/RIF, the detection rates raised, then after declined again. The GeneXpert MTB/RIF has add

Detection of icaA Gene Expression in Clinical Biofilm-Producing Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates
...Show More Authors

The pathogenicity resulting from Staphylococcus aureus infection has remarkable importance as one of the community-associated bacterial infections, due to the virulent ability of these bacteria to produce biofilms. This study was designed to detect biofilm production in clinical isolates from samples of wounds and urinary tract infections. The expression levels of the icaA gene that is responsible of slime layer production in biofilms was compared in isolates with different biofilm producing capabilities. Fifty seven samples that included 32 samples from urine and 25 samples from wounds were collected from Alwasti Hospital, Al-Kindi Teaching Hospital, and Alzahraa Clinic, Baghdad, Iraq. The bacteria was identified accor

The results of the present study showed that twenty-five samples were collected for the age group 35–40 years and four samples for the age group 65–70 years for both genders. The results showed that 48 (48%) of the samples were obtained from the hands, 16 (16%) from the legs, 12 (12%) from the abdominal area, and 10 (10%) from the chest area. The four (4%) samples were obtained from burns in the back and thighs area. The samples taken according to the cause of burns were 40 (40%) due to hot water, hot liquids, or hot steam, followed by 18 (18%) due to the use of hot tools, 15 (15%) due to fires, 12 (12%) due to electric currents, 10 (10%) due to chemicals such as strong acids, alkaline lye, paint thinner, or gasoline, and 5 (5%) due

The Digital Change Detection for Low Resolution Satellite Images in Weathering Estimation
...Show More Authors

The detection and estimation of weathering conditions have become a very important daily necessity in our life. For this purpose, several satellites of low resolution imagery were launched by the weathering and environmental agencies. The important weather paremeters are temperuter, wind direction,  velocity, clould and humidity, etc. The low resolution images often deal with large-scale phenomena and the interpretation and projection of the produced data requires continuous development of tools and criteria.              In this paper, the low spatial resolution data generated by the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) were used to monitor the cloud density and direction above Iraq and i
