Oxidation Desulphurization of Heavy Naphtha Improved by Ultrasound Waves
...Show More Authors

The oxidation desulphurization assisted by ultrasound waves was applied to the desulphurization of heavy naphtha. Hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid were used as oxidants, ultrasound waves as phase dispersion, and activated carbon as solid adsorbent. When the oxidation desulphurization (ODS) process was followed by a solid adsorption step, the performance of overall Sulphur removal was 89% for heavy naphtha at the normal condition of pressure and temperature. The process of (ODS) converts the compounds of Sulphur to sulfoxides/ sulfones, and these oxidizing compounds can be removed by activated carbon to produce fuel with low Sulphur content. The absence of any components (hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, ultrasound waves and activated carbon) from the ODS process leading to reduce the performance of removal, hydrogen peroxide was the most crucial factor. The ultrasound waves increase the dispersion of carbon, water and oil phase, promotes the interfacial mass transfer, and this leads to accelerates the reaction. The ultrasound waves did not affect the chemical or physical properties of the fuel. The chemical analysis of treated fuel oil showed that <1% of the hydrocarbon fuel compounds were oxidized in the ODS process. In this work, desulphurization by oxidation is the main mechanism was tested with several parameters that effects desulphurization efficiency such as sonication time (5-40) min, activated carbon (0.01-0.5) gm, hydrogen peroxide (1-30) ml, and acetic acid (1-15) ml. It was found that the hydrogen peroxide amounts lead to increase oxidation rates of Sulphur compounds so, the desulphurization efficiency increases. The optimum amounts of oxidants are 10 ml hydrogen peroxide per 100 ml of heavy naphtha. Increasing the amount of acid catalyst lead to increase Sulphur removal, it was found that7.5 ml acid per 10 ml oxidant was the optimum amount. Activated carbon as a solid adsorbent and reaction enhancer with 0.1gm weight was found as the optimum amount for 100 ml heavy naphtha. Increasing sonication time lead to increase desulphurization rate, it was found that (10 min) is the optimum period. By applying the optimum parameters 89% of sulfur can be removed from heavy naphtha with 598.4 ppm Sulphur content.

Monitoring of the Vertical Settlement In Heavy Structures By Precise Levelling
...Show More Authors

Monitoring and analysing of the vertical deformations or the settlements of the structures is one of the main research fields in geodetic applications, which is considered a precise periodic measurement, made at different epochs to investigate these deformations on heavy structures.
In this research, the deformation measurements were carried out on one of Baghdad University buildings,” Building of Computers Department” of dimensions (70.0 * 81.3 m.). Due to some cracks observed in their walls, it was necessary to monitor the vertical displacement of this building at some particular monitoring points by constructing a vertical network and measured in different epochs. The first epoch (zero epoch) was carried out in April 2006, the

Removal of Heavy Metals from Industrial Wastewater by Using RO Membrane
...Show More Authors

Industrial wastewater containing nickel, lead, and copper can be produced by many industries. The reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies are very efficient for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing nickel, lead, and copper ions to reduce water consumption and preserving the environment. Synthetic industrial wastewater samples containing Ni(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) ions at various concentrations (50 to 200 ppm), pressures (1 to 4 bar), temperatures (10 to 40 oC), pH (2 to 5.5), and flow rates (10 to 40 L/hr), were prepared and subjected to treatment by RO system in the laboratory. The results showed that high removal efficiency of the heavy metals could be achieved by RO process (98.5%, 97.5% and 96% for Ni(II),

Improved optimality checkpoint for decision making by using the sub-triangular form
...Show More Authors

Decision-making in Operations Research is the main point in various studies in our real-life applications. However, these different studies focus on this topic. One drawback some of their studies are restricted and have not addressed the nature of values in terms of imprecise data (ID). This paper thus deals with two contributions. First, decreasing the total costs by classifying subsets of costs. Second, improving the optimality solution by the Hungarian assignment approach. This newly proposed method is called fuzzy sub-Triangular form (FS-TF) under ID. The results obtained are exquisite as compared with previous methods including, robust ranking technique, arithmetic operations, magnitude ranking method and centroid ranking method. This

Toxicity Reduction of Reactive Red Dye-238 Using Advanced Oxidation Process by Solar Energy
...Show More Authors

Decolorization of red azo dye (Cibacron Red FN-R) from synthetic wastewater has been investigated as a function of solar advanced oxidation process. The photocatalytic activity using ZnO as a photocatalysis has been estimated. Different parameters affected the removal efficiency, including pH of the solution, initial dye concentration and H2O2 concentration were evaluated to find out the optimum value of these parameters. The results proved that the optimal pH value was 8 and the most efficient H2O2 concentration was 100mg/L. Toxicity reduction percent for effluent solution was also monitored to assess the degradation process. This treatment method was able to strongly reduce the color and toxicity of reactive red dye-238 to about (99 an

Real wastewater Treatment by Electrocoagulation- Electro-oxidation Combined System: Optimization using Taguchi Approach
...Show More Authors

In this study, the optimum conditions for COD removal from petroleum refinery wastewater by using a combined electrocoagulation- electro-oxidation system were attained by Taguchi method. An orthogonal array experimental design (L18) which is of four controllable parameters including NaCl concentration, C.D. (current density), PH, and time (time of electrolysis) was employed. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentage was considered as the quality characteristics to be enhanced. Also, the value of turbidity and TDS (total dissolved solid) were estimated. The optimum levels of the studied parameters were determined precisely by implementing S/N analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimum conditions were found to be NaCl = 2.5

Oxidant or Catalyst for Oxidation? A Study of How Structure and Disorder Change the Selectivity for Direct versus Catalytic Oxidation Mediated by Manganese(III,IV) Oxides
...Show More Authors

Structure type and disorder have become important questions in catalyst design, with the most active catalysts often noted to be “disordered” or “amorphous” in nature. To quantify the effects of disorder and structure type systematically, a test set of manganese(III,IV) oxides was developed and their reactivity as oxidants and catalysts tested against three substrates: methylene blue, hydrogen peroxide, and water. We find that disorder destabilizes the materialsthermodynamically, making them stronger chemical oxidantsbut not necessarily better catalysts. For the disproportionation of H2O2 and the oxidative decomposition of methylene blue, MnOx-mediated direct oxidation competes with catalytically mediated oxidation, making the most
