Study of the Biological Diversity of Benthic algae in the Tigris River, Baghdad - Iraq
Abstract<p>The present work included a study of benthic algae on two substrates: rocks and clay on a section of the Tigris River at the Al-Atifiyah site in the fall of 2018. The result of this study was recorded 89 species belong to 50 genus of benthic algae on both substrates and composed of Bacillariophyceae (59.6%, 61.2%), Chlorophyceae (25.8%, 20.4%) and Cyanophyceae (14.5%, 18.3%) respectively on epilithic and epipelic algae. The present study was recorded the highest total algae cell density (1173.2 cells *103/cm2) on epilithic algae while the lowest total algae cell density was recorded on epipelic algae (76.95 cells *103/gm). Qualitative and Quantitative study of Epipelic algae in Tigris River within Baghdad City, Iraq

The present study conducted to study epipelic algae in the Tigris River within Baghdad city for one year from September 2011 to August 2012 due to the importance role of benthic algae in lotic ecosystems. Five sites have been chosen along the river. A total of 154 species of epipelic algae was recorded belongs to 45 genera, where Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms) was the dominant groups followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. The numbers of common types in three sites were 47 species. Bacillariophyceae accounted 88.31% of the total number of epipelic algae, followed by Cyanophyceae 7.14 % and Chlorophyceae 4.55%. A 85 species (29 genera) recorded in site 1, 103 species (34 genera) in site2, 112 species (35 genera) in site3, 96 species

Some Protozoan Species Inhabiting the East Bank Sediment of River Tigris in Baghdad City

There are no researches in Iraq concerned identification and ecology of protozoa in sediment. The present study has been dealt with free-living protozoa community of the Tigris river bank sediment in Baghdad city. Variable species of vegetation (reeds and wild grasses) were observed to grow at both sides of the river.
For the present study three sites were chosen at the east side of river Tigris. Monthly samples were collected from the sediment of each site over a period from January to October 2012.Total of 22 taxa were found, 12 of ciliates, 5 of each flagellates and sarcodines in the sediment samples. The highest numbers of protozoan 15 taxa were recorded from each of the sites 1&3 and little less taxa (13) were found in site 2

Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) in the Tigris River through Passing Baghdad Province

Tigris River receives many pollutants while passing through Baghdad province due to increasing of population, discharge of untreated industrials, agricultural wastes on the river. The present study was conducted from January 2013 to December 2013 on the Tigris River starting from Al-Muthana Bridge to Al-Zaufurania city before it's jointed with Diyalla Tributaries. Six stations were chosen on the Tigris River along Baghdad city. The study was included measuring the bimonthly concentrations and distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the samples of surface water. The sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed by USEPA as priority pollutants (Naphthalene, Acenaphthalene, Acenaphthene, Fluorene, Phenanthrene,

Environmental Effects of Lower Zab Tributary on Benthic Invertebrates Species Diversity in Tigris River

Benthic   invertebrates'   diversity   and    some  physical    a:1d

chemical characteristics in Lower Zab tributary and Tigris River were studied.  Month l y samples  were col l ected  from  November  2001 to October 2002.

The rt:sLllts of the present study showed  the turbidity iu Tigris river

before the confluence to be higher (34.4 NTU) compared to the other stations.  Mean salinity was greater in Lower Zab tributary (0.33 %) compared to that in the river.  Lower Zab tJibutary and Tigris River were good in Oxygen content, and a high dissolved oxygen value was recorded (7.9 mg/L) in Lower Zab tributary.

Age and Growth of Varicorhinus trutta (Heckel) in Tigris River at Salahuldin Province, Iraq

Age and growth of a population of Varicorhinus trutta (Heckel) from Tigris river at Salahuldin province have been investigated during the period from September 1999 to August 2000. A total of 156 fishes were collected from two stations at Tigris river using small meshed gill nets. The age data revealed that the species under investigation reached to a maximum age of seven years and approximately 46 cm long. The population of this species in Tigris river at the sites of study was dominated by 3 and 4 years classes. There were no marked differences in growth or longevity between the sexes. Determination of length-weight relationship revealed that the growth of both sexes in the species under investigation was allometric and the values of b

Diversity Measurement Indices of Diatom Communities in the Tigris River within Wasit Province, Iraq

The study was conducted to measure diatom species diversity in the lotic ecosystem across the Wasit Province for 12 months. The quantitative study of diatoms (phytoplankton) was investigated in the Tigris river. The density of algae was ranged from 60989 cell×103/l to 112780.82 cell×103/l in the five sites. These algae were belonging to 39 genera. The richness index values ranged from 1.53 at site 5 in January 2016 to 6.34 at site 1 and June2015. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H´) was 2.33 in February 2016 and 3.72 in June 2015 both values at site 3, whereas Evenness index was 0.54 at site 5 in March2016 and 0.98 at site 1 in both August2015 and May2016. The lack of homogeneity of the appearance of species indicates the dominance of a

The study of water quality changes using GIS and remote sensing for Tigris River through Salah Al-Din province, Iraq

The most significant water supply, which is the basis of agriculture, industry and human and wildlife needs, is the river. In order to determine its suitability for drinking purposes, this study aims to measure the Water Quality Index (WQI) of the Tigris River in the Salah Al-Din Province (center of Tikrit), north of Baghdad. For ten (9) physio-chemical parameters, namely turbidity, total suspended sediments, PH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chloride, nitrogen as nitrate, sulphate, and then transported for examination to the laboratory, water samples were collected from 13 locations along the Tigris river. Using the weighted arithmetic index method, the WQI was measured and found to be 105,87 in up-stream, wh

An Investigation to the Abrasive Wear in Pipes Used for Oil Industry

The work reported in this study focusing on the abrasive wear behavior for three types of pipes used in oil industries (Carbone steel, Alloy steel and Stainless steel) using a wear apparatus for dry and wet tests, manufactured according to ASTM G65. Silica sand with
hardness (1000-1100) HV was used as abrasive material. The abrasive wear of these pipes has been measured experimentally by measuring the wear rate for each case under different sliding speeds, applied loads, and sand conditions (dry or wet). All tests have been conducted using sand of particle size (200-425) µm, ambient temperature of 34.5 °C and humidity 22% (Lab conditions).
The results show that the material loss due to abrasive wear increased monotonically with
