Oily water treatment by polyacrylonitrile/polysulfone blend ultrafiltration membrane embedded with alumina nanoparticles of improved antifouling properties
...Show More Authors

<p>The polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polysulfone (PSF) blended polymer membranes were modified by decaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12EO10) as a non-ionic surfactant. Polymeric solutions containing 17 wt.% of both PAN and PSF with a ratio of 80/20, and C12EO10 with a mass concentration of 6 wt.% and aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles with varying concentrations (1, 2, and 3 wt.%) were prepared. Adding 6 wt.% of C12EO10 to the casting solution formed a membrane with distinguished hydrophilicity and fouling resistance, higher porosity, appreciable permeate flux (77.1 L/m2.h), and distinct vacuum gas oil rejection (92%) in comparison with the pure PAN ultrafiltration membrane. Further improvement for the PAN/PSF blend membrane using 2 wt.% of γ-Al2O3 in the presence of 6 wt.% of C12EO10 (PPCA-6-2γ membrane) produced an excellent permeate flux of&nbsp;189.2 L/m²·h, favorable hydrophilicity with a contact angle of 26.55°, and an optimistic COD removal%, expressing the VGO rejection, of 97.15%. The&nbsp;PPCA-6-2γ membrane revealed acceptable separation performance up to four cycles of filtration and exhibited enhanced antifouling properties with an FRR% of 95.4%.&nbsp;The fouling mechanism that determines the flux reduction during crossflow ultrafiltration by the PPCA-6-2γ membrane was studied using the Hermia models. The cake layer formation model provided the best match for the experimental behavior when analyzing the flux reduction with time for the PPCA-6-2γ membrane. The fabrication cost was determined for PPCA-6-2γ membrane to be $1.67/20 g, respectively. So, the local manufacturing costs of the PPCA-6-2γ membrane did not surpass 90 $/m2 of the membrane.</p>

Characterization of the Geotechnical Properties of Expansive Soil Improved by Sludge Waste
...Show More Authors

Recently, a great rise in the population and fast manufacturing processes were noticed. These processes release significant magnitudes of waste. These wastes occupied a notable ground region, generating big issues for the earth and the environment. To enhance the geotechnical properties of fine-grained soil, a sequence of research projects in the lab were conducted to analyze the impacts of adding sludge waste (SW). The tests were done on both natural and mixed soil with SW at various proportions (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%) based on the dry mass of the soil used. The experiments conducted focused on consistency, compaction, and shear strength. With the addition of 10% of SW, the values of LL and PI decreased by 29.7% and 3

Oily Wastewater Treatment Using Expanded Beds of Activated Carbon and Zeolite
...Show More Authors

Two types of adsorbents were used to treat oily wastewater, activated carbon and zeolite. The removal efficiencies of these materials were compared to each other. The results showed that activated carbon performed some better properties in removal of oil. The experimental methods which were employed in this investigation included batch and column studies. The former was used to evaluate the rate and equilibrium of carbon and zeolie adsorption, while the latter was used to determine treatment efficiencies and performance characteristics. Expanded bed adsorber was constructed in the column studies. In this study, the adsorption behavior of vegetable oil (corn oil) onto activated carbon and zeolite was examined as a function of the concentr

Morphology and Mechanical Properties of (Epoxy/PVC) Blend
...Show More Authors

Abstract

In this research, the morphology and mechanical properties of (Epoxy/PVC) blend were investigated.  (EP/PVC) blend was prepared by manual mixing of epoxy resin with different weight ratios of (Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) after dissolving it in cyclohexanon). Five sheets of polymer blends in wt% included (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) of PVC were prepared at room temperature. Tests were carried out to study some mechanical properties for these blends and compared with the properties of pure epoxy. The morphology of the prepared materials was examined to study the compatibility nature between the two polymers under work. It was found that the best ratio of addition is (20%) of PVC.

The nonlinear optical properties of Epoxy/Alumina Nanocomposites
...Show More Authors

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of epoxy/ Al2O3 nanocomposites system were studied for epoxy neat and (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5) % Al2O3 nanocomposites. The band gap of epoxy and its nanocomposites was obtained at these weight ratios. Nonlinear optical properties experiments were performed using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser z-scan system. These experiments were carried out for different parameters: wavelengths (1064 nm and 532 nm), laser intensities (0.530, 0.679, and 0.772) GW/cm2 and weight ratio of Al2O3 nanocomposites. The results showed that the band gaps were decreased with increasing the weight ratio of nanoalumina except at 5wt% and the nonlinear refractive index coefficient is directly proportional to the incident intensities while o

Study the Efficiency of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles for Water Treatment from Conge Red Dye
...Show More Authors

A modified chemical method was used to prepare titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs), which were diagnosed by several techniques: X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, field emission scaning electron microscopy, energy disperse X-ray, and UV-visible spectroscopy, which proved the success of the preparation process at the nanoscale level. Where the titanium oxide particles have an average particle size equal to 6.8 nm, titanium dioxide particles were used in the process of adsorption of Congo red dye from its aqueous solutions using a batch system. The titanium oxide particles gave an adsorption efficiency of Congo red dye up to more than 79 %. The experimental data of the adsorption process were analyzed with kinetic models and

Treatment of Sulfate in Sand by Using Magnetic Water Process
...Show More Authors

One of the most important problems in concrete production in Iraq and other country is the high sulfate content in sand that led to damage of concrete and hence reduces its compressive strength and may leads to cracking due to internal sulfate attack and delay ettringite formation. The magnetic water treatment process is adopted in this study. Many samples with different SO3 content are treated with magnetic water (12, 8, 4 and 2)L that needed for each 1kg of sand with the magnetic intensity (9000 and 5000) Gaus. The magnetic water needed is reduced with less SO3 content in sand. The ACI 211.1-91 concrete mix design was used in this research with slump range (75- 100) mm and the specified compressive strength (35MPa). The compressive streng

The Optical Limiting Behaviour of Prepared Silver Nanoparticles Embedded in Polymer Film
...Show More Authors

In the present work, silver nanoparticles were prepared. Nonlinear optical properties and
optical limiting of silver nanoparticles were investigated.Standard chemical synthesis method was used at
diffrent weight ratio(0.038, 0.058 and 0.078) of silver nitrate. Several testing were done to obtain the
characteristics of the sample. Z-Scan experiments were performed using 30 ns Q-switched Nd:YAG
laser at 1064 nm and 532 nm at different intensities. The results showed that the nonlinear refractive
index is directly proportional to the input intensities, which caused by the self-focusing of the material.
In addition, the optical limiting behavior has been studied. The results showed that the sample could be
used as an opt
