Pathway of total petroleum hydrocarbon in a lotic ecosystem: water and sediment of Tigris River, Iraq
...Show More Authors
Abstract
The monitoring of lotic ecosystems is an important issue. This study investigated the total petroleum hydrocarbons (THP) in the Tigris River within Baghdad City, Iraq, which is considered the ultimate water supply source of the city. The study included measurement of THP concentrations, distribution, and origins of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in various matrices (water, sediment, and macrophyte) in Tigris River within Baghdad City, in addition to some environmental factors during two seasons (dry and wet) for October 2020 to April 2021. The sampling was collected from three sites along the river. Thirteen compounds were identified in the current investigation from total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), including hexatriacontane, tetracontane, tetratetracontane, undecane, dodecane, hexane, nonane, tetradecane, hexadecane, eicosane, dortiacontane, decane, and octadecane. TPHs concentrations were arranged in the following order macrophyte > sediment > water, and the oil refinery (site 2) was the most hydrocarbon contamination due to its anthropogenic activity. The highest results varied: 54.8 mg/L for hexatriacontane in water, 258.8 mg/g for hexadecane and nonane in sediment, while macrophyte was 393 mg/g for hexadecane. The origin of TPHs in different matrices in the current investigation was pyrogenic (Anthropogenic) according to the portion of low molecular weight/high molecular weight (LMW/HMW). The oil refinery site is considered a risk site by the increasing concentration of TPHs. The THPs pollution is beside other environmental problems in Iraq need to find a quick solution to save the river.

Petrophysical Characterization and Lithology of the Mishrif Formation in Ratawi Oil Field, Southern Iraq
...Show More Authors

The Ratawi Oil Field (ROF) is one of Iraq's most important oil fields because of its significant economic oil reserves. The major oil reserves of ROF are in the Mishrif Formation. The main objective of this paper is to assess the petrophysical properties, lithology identification, and hydrocarbon potential of the Mishrif Formation using interpreting data from five open-hole logs of wells RT-2, RT-4, RT-5, RT-6, and RT-42. Understanding reservoir properties allows for a more accurate assessment of recoverable oil reserves. The rock type (limestone) and permeability variations help tailor oil extraction methods, extraction methods and improving recovery techniques. The petrophysical properties were calculated using Interactive Petroph

A NEW HOST RECORD FOR TOMATO LEAF MINER TUTA ABSOLUTA (MEYRICK, 1917) IN BAGHDAD PROVINCE, IRAQ
...Show More Authors

In 2010, the tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) was reported for the first time in Iraq. The larvae can feed on all parts of tomato plants and can damage all the growth stages. The main host plant is tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, but it can also attack other plants in Solanaceae family. In this study it was found attacking alfalfa plants, Medicago sativa in Baghdad Province. This finding reveals that alfalfa also serves as a host plant for T. absoluta in Iraq.

Environmental parameters drive the phytoplankton community structure: a case study in Baghdad Tourist Island Lake, Iraq
...Show More Authors

Phytoplankton community is a model for of monitoring aquatic systems and interpreting the environmental change in aquatic systems. The present study aimed to forecast environmental parameters that drive the change of phytoplankton community structure in the lake. The present study was carried out in Baghdad Tourist Island Lake (BTIL) for the period From October 2021 to May 2022. The study included the quality and quantity of phytoplankton, moreover, the highest and lowest value of the physical and chemical parameters were (Water temperature (13-30 °C), Light penetration (94-275cm), electric conductivity (837-1128 µS/cm), salinity (0.5-0.7 ‰), pH (7-8.2), total alkalinity (126-226 mg CaCO3/L), total Hardness (297-395 mg CaCO3/L

The current research deals with practical studies that explain to the Iraqi consumer multiple instances about the phenomenon of water hammer which occur in the water pipeline operating with pressure. It concern a practical study of the characteristics of this phenomenon and economically harmful to the consumer the same time. Multiple pipe fittings are used aimed to reduce this phenomenon and its work as alternatives to the manufactured arresters that used to avoid water hammer in the sanitary installations, while the consumer did not have any knowledge as to the non-traded for many reasons, including the water pressure decreases in the networks and the use of consumer pumps to draw water directly from the network. A new bio-electrochemical system was proposed for simultaneous removal of organic matters and salinity from actual domestic wastewater and synthetically prepared saline water, respectively. The performance of a three-chambered microbial osmotic fuel cell (MOFC) provided with forward osmosis (FO) membrane and cation exchange membrane (CEM) was evaluated with respect to the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from wastewater, electricity generation, and desalination of saline water. The MOFC wasinoculated with activated sludge and fueled with actual domestic wastewater. Results revealed that maximum removal efficiency of COD from wastewater, TDS removal efficiency from saline water, power density, and current density were
