BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid carcinoma that represents a set of characteristic of nuclear features in which the diagnosis is depend. AIM: The study aimed to review different variants of PTC which has different malignant potential in correlation with many prognostic and clinical factors in Iraq. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Paraffin blocks of 227 cases of PTC were selected, subtyped, and grouped according to the malignant potential. The prognostic and clinical factors were studied. RESULTS: The mean age was (39.29 ± 12.17) years, with female predominance (86.3%), where (55.5%) of them below 40 years, conventional variant was most common (40.1%), followed by papillary microcarcinoma variant, 197 cases (86.8%) were classified as low to intermediate malignant potential, and 30 cases (13.2%) were classified as high malignant potential. On comparison, among the tumor stages, tumor focality, native capsular invasion, lymph nodes involvement, presence or absence of vascular invasion, extrathyroid extension, and distant metastasis, there is no significant correlation between them, whereas with the tumor size, there is significant correlation between them (p =< 0.05). CONCLUSION: Conventional type followed by micropapillary type is most common. The mean age in Iraqi patients is lower than other countries for PTC. There is no significant association regarding prognostic factors between low to intermediate malignant potential variants and high malignant potential variants with exception of tumor diameter.
Thyroid carcinoma incidence is increasing year after year and ranking second among top ten cancers in Iraq, especially among women, and this increased the requirement for the improvement of the molecular detection accuracy because of its potential role in the early detection. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs1136410, A>G and rs1805414, A>G) in PARP1 gene were found to be associated with thyroid carcinoma risk in several genome wide association studies, therefore, this is a case-control study that was carried out to identify whether these polym

5a of Bethesda system (suspicious for papillary carcinoma) are treated by surgical lobectomy followed
by total thyroidectomy if histopathology confirms papillary carcinoma. In order to reduce surgical
procedures to one this was conducted.
Objectives: evaluation of role of immunohistochemistry in pre-operative diagnosis of papillary thyroid
carcinoma on cell blocks.
Materials and Method: Cell blocks were taken from cases labelled category-5a for histopathology and
immunohistochemistry using three markers (CK-19, Thyro-peroxidase, and BRAFv600E mutation).
Results: were highly sensitive, and specific. The use of more tha
Thyroid carcinoma incidence is increasing yearly and ranks second among the top ten cancers in Iraq, especially among women. The single nucleotide polymorphism (rs965513, A>C) near FOXE1 gene was found to be associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma risk in several Genome-wide association studies. Therefore, this is a case-control study aimed at identifying whether this variation is associated with the risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma in the Iraqi population. Association of rs965513 was investigated in one hundred and one papillary thyroid carcinoma Iraqi patients and one hundred and two controls using quantitative PCR-high resolution melting technique. The results of genotype and allele frequencies showe

Objective: Evaluation of the detection of thyroglobulin antibody and thyroid peroxides antibody in different thyroid diseases using enzyme linked immunosorbant assay technique.
Methods: - Seventy-five patients admitted to Surgical Units of Baghdad Medical City Hospital for the period between "October 2010 to June 2011" they were waiting to do thyroidectomy. They were chosen nonselectively for serological evaluation of above autoantibodies , and correlation of the results
Background: thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine carcinoma as it accounts for almost 90% of all endocrine malignancies. The term incidental denoted malignant tumors of the thyroid gland detected by post-operative biopsy results of the resected specimens resected from benign thyroid diseases. Among the incidental thyroid malignancies, papillary carcinoma is the commonest pathological type.
Objectives : To determine the incidence of incidental thyroid carcinoma and to insist on accurate preoperative diagnostic work up of patients with thyroid diseases.
Patients & Methods: A prospective study, which was conducted during the period from March 2013 to April 2014 at Baghdad teaching hospital first surgical unit by the same
Background: The occurrence of incidental thyroid cancer (ITC) has increased by three times during the last decades and this rise could be attributed to many factors. To limit the prevalence of ITC with goiter especially nodular goiter, total thyroidectomy can become a procedure of choice.
Objective: To determine the extent of incidental thyroid carcinoma (ITC) and to plan a proper preoperative diagnostic work up and a convenient operative procedure for patients with different thyroid diseases.
Results: ITC was found in 77 patients (19.15%). While, 63 patients with non-toxic MNG (15.6%), 12 patients with non-toxic solitary thyroid nodule (3%) and two patients (0.5%) wi
Background: The grading systems of salivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma depend on different histologic and morphologic features. The aim of this study was to compare between Auclair and Brandwein systems according to their histologic criteria, and the type of cell predominant. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one case included hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stained tissue slides that were diagnosed as MEC, originally categorized into low and high grade type regardless of the grading system, have meticulously undergone histopathologic review. The sample was graded according to criteria owing to Auclair and Brandwein methods. The predominant type of cells was determined by microscopic examination according to grade of tumor. Results: Regarding the

So, we performed this research to determine any potential relationship between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the risk of developing differentiated thyroid cancer in clinical status. we assessed the related clinical factors linking these conditions, especially serum thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration, family history of thyroid disease, gender& young age group. Aim of study: to determine that hashimoto’s thyroiditis increases risk for differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Patients and method: This study is a Cross-sectiona

Fine-needle aspiration cytology is the primary and frequently initial tool for assessing the risk of malignancy in thyroid nodules and selecting patients for thyroid surgery.
Patients and Methods: This prospective study was done during the period from June 2007 to November 2008. The study includes 141 patients with palpable solitary or multiple thyroid nodules. Only patients with normal or low TSH values were referred for ultrasound examination and ultrasound guided FNAC, which were done using fine needles (G 20).
Results: eleven patients (7.8%) have insuffici
