Assessment of Six Polymorphic Variants as Genetic Risks for Coronary Artery Disease: A Case–Control Study
...Show More Authors
Abstract
<title>Background:

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Certain genetic polymorphisms play an important role in this multifactorial disease, being linked with increased risk of early onset CAD.

Objective:

To assess six genetic polymorphisms and clinical risk factors in relation to early onset nondiabetic Iraqi Arab CAD patients compared to controls.

Materials and Methods:

This case–control study recruited 40 Iraqi patients with early onset CAD and 20 healthy controls. Demographic and clinical data were reported. Six genetic variants were tested: β-fibrinogen (FGB), human platelet antigen 1 (HPA1a/b), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), two variants of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and lymphotoxin alpha (LTA), utilizing a ready-to-use kit.

Results:

The majority of patients were older males (85%), nonsmokers (52.5%), hypertensives (57.5%), had dyslipidemia (100%), and had a family history of ischemia (77.5%). This contrasts the findings in the control group (P < 0.001). From the six studied polymorphisms, a statistically significant difference was found between patients and controls in relation to ACE and LTA genes (P = 0.032 and 0.028), respectively. None (0%) of the participants had a genetic risk score >6. There was a statistically significant association between higher clinical risk scores and CAD group; eNOS G894T was found to be linked with increasing age, while LTA was linked to dyslipidemia.

Conclusions:

This study aids in CAD risk stratification. There is a need for longitudinal studies assessing more genetic risks to CAD as a national CAD preventive program for high-risk Iraqi people.

Semiotic criteria for analyzing religious symbols in press reports Qantara news site as a model

The report includes a group of symbols that are employed within a framework that gives a language of greater impact. This research discusses the problem of the semiotic employment of religious symbols in press reports published in the electronic press across two levels: Reading to perceive the visual message in its abstract form, and the second for re-understanding and interpretation, as this level gives semantics to reveal the implicit level of media messages through a set of semiotic criteria on which it was based to cut texts to reach the process of understanding and interpretation.

Slow sand filtration as a tertiary treatment for the secondary effluent from sewage treatment plant
...Show More Authors

A field-pilot scale slow sand filter (SSF) was constructed at Al-Rustamiya Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Baghdad city to investigate the removal efficiency in terms of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Chloride concentrations for achieving better secondary effluent quality from this treatment plant. The SSF was designed at a 0.2 m/h filtration rate with filter area 1 m2 and total filter depth of 2.3 m. A filter sand media 0.35 mm in size and 1 m depth was supported by 0.2 m layer of gravel of size 5 mm. The secondary effluent from Al-Rustamiya STP was used as the influent to the slow sand filter. The results showed that the removal of BOD5, COD, TSS, and Chloride were

Polyalphaolefin as a potential modifying agent for hard asphalt cement: Physical, rheological, and chemical characterization
...Show More Authors

Hard-grade asphalt binders like AC20-30 typically exhibit excessive stiffness, reduced penetration, and compromised workability, necessitating modification before use in paving applications. This study evaluates the efficacy of regular polyalphaolefin (PAO), a synthetic olefin-based lubricant, as a performance-enhancing modifying agent for such binders. AC20-30 was blended with PAO at dosages ranging from 2 wt.% to 10 wt.%, and the modified binders were characterized via penetration, ductility, softening point, and rotational viscosity measurements, alongside advanced rheological and chemical-morphological analyses. Incorporating PAO in AC20-30 asphalt progressively reduced the binder stiffness and enhanced its flexibility, with all modifie

The potential role of targeting the leptin receptor as a treatment for breast cancer in the context of hyperleptinemia: a literature review
...Show More Authors

Since cancer is becoming a leading cause of death worldwide, efforts should be concentrated on understanding its underlying biological alterations that would be utilized in disease management, especially prevention strategies. Within this context, multiple bodies of evidence have highlighted leptin’s practical and promising role, a peptide hormone extracted from adipose and fatty tissues with other adipokines, in promoting the proliferation, migration, and metastatic invasion of breast carcinoma cells. Excessive blood leptin levels and hyperleptinemia increase body fat content and stimulate appetite. Also, high leptin level is believed to be associated with several conditions, including overeating, emotional stress, inflammation, obesity,

Assessing the Potentiality of Using CXCL9 as A Predictive Biomarker for Acute and Chronic Toxoplasmosis, and Study the Correlation Between CXCL9, Toxoplasmosis and Thyroid Disorder in These Cases
...Show More Authors

Background:  Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand (CXCL9) has an important role recruiting the T-lymphocytes and immune response after infection by inducing T-cells accumulation around the areas associated with infections. However, this role is poorly known in relation with Toxoplasma gondii infection and also in association with thyroid hormones, which the present study is focused on. Methods: Eighty-seven women were included in this study for the period between September 2021 and February 2022. Blood samples of uninfected healthy pregnant, in addition to aborted and pregnant women infected with toxoplasmosis, were collected. Sera were then obtained and stored at -10°C. Toxo-latex agglutination test was done, followed by detec

Abstract:

In light of the development in the banking environment and the increasing reliance on electronic systems in providing banking services and due to the intense competition witnessed by the banking sector, the need has emerged to apply the comprehensive electronic banking system, which works on the Internet in providing new and diverse banking services regardless of time and place by linking all branches to one central database, and despite the advantages achieved from the application of the comprehensive system, there is a set of risks that accompany the use of that system, What requires the auditors to develop the audit method in line with the size of the development in the

The research aims to improve operational performance through the application of the Holonic Manufacturing System (HMS) in the rubber products factory in Najaf. The problem was diagnosed with the weakness of the manufacturing system in the factory to meet customers' demands on time within the available resources of machines and workers, which led to time delays of Processing and delivery, increased costs, and reduced flexibility in the factory, A case study methodology used to identify the reality of the manufacturing system and the actual operational performance in the factory. The simulation was used to represent the proposed (HMS) by using (Excel 2010) based on the actual data and calculate the operational performance measures
