New Combined Technique for Fingerprint Image Enhancement

This paper presents a combination of enhancement techniques for fingerprint images affected by different type of noise. These techniques were applied to improve image quality and come up with an acceptable image contrast. The proposed method included five different enhancement techniques: Normalization, Histogram Equalization, Binarization, Skeletonization and Fusion. The Normalization process standardized the pixel intensity which facilitated the processing of subsequent image enhancement stages. Subsequently, the Histogram Equalization technique increased the contrast of the images. Furthermore, the Binarization and Skeletonization techniques were implemented to differentiate between the ridge and valley structures and to obtain one

Developed JPEG Algorithm Applied in Image Compression
Abstract<p>JPEG is most popular image compression and encoding, this technique is widely used in many applications (images, videos and 3D animations). Meanwhile, researchers are very interested to develop this massive technique to compress images at higher compression ratios with keeping image quality as much as possible. For this reason in this paper we introduce a developed JPEG based on fast DCT and removed most of zeros and keeps their positions in a transformed block. Additionally, arithmetic coding applied rather than Huffman coding. The results showed up, the proposed developed JPEG algorithm has better image quality than traditional JPEG techniques.</p>

Image Compression Techniques on-Board Small Satellites

Raw satellite images are considered high in resolution, especially multispectral images captured by remote sensing satellites. Hence, choosing the suitable compression technique for such images should be carefully considered, especially on-board small satellites, due to the limited resources. This paper presents an overview and classification of the major and state-of-the-art compression techniques utilized in most space missions launched during the last few decades, such as the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)-based compression techniques. The pros and cons of the onboard compression methods are presented, giving their specifications and showing the differences among them to provide uni

Image Compression Based on Arithmetic Coding Algorithm

The past years have seen a rapid development in the area of image compression techniques, mainly due to the need of fast and efficient techniques for storage and transmission of data among individuals. Compression is the process of representing the data in a compact form rather than in its original or incompact form. In this paper, integer implementation of Arithmetic Coding (AC) and Discreet Cosine Transform (DCT) were applied to colored images. The DCT was applied using the YCbCr color model. The transformed image was then quantized with the standard quantization tables for luminance and chrominance. The quantized coefficients were scanned by zigzag scan and the output was encoded using AC. The results showed a decent compression ratio

EFFICIENCY SPIHT IN COMPRESSION AND QUALITY OF IMAGE

Image compression is an important tool to reduce the bandwidth and storage
requirements of practical image systems. To reduce the increasing demand of storage
space and transmission time compression techniques are the need of the day. Discrete
time wavelet transforms based image codec using Set Partitioning In Hierarchical
Trees (SPIHT) is implemented in this paper. Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal
to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Maximum Difference (MD) are used to measure the
picture quality of reconstructed image. MSE and PSNR are the most common picture
quality measures. Different kinds of test images are assessed in this work with
different compression ratios. The results show the high efficiency of SPIHT algori

Compression of Astronomical Image Using Five Modulus Method

The computer vision branch of the artificial intelligence field is concerned with
developing algorithms for analyzing image content. Data may be compressed by
reducing the redundancy in the original data, but this makes the data have more
errors. In this paper image compression based on a new method that has been
created for image compression which is called Five Modulus Method (FMM). The
new method consists of converting each pixel value in an (4x4, 8×8,16x16) block
into a multiple of 5 for each of the R, G and B arrays. After that, the new values
could be divided by 5 to get new values which are 6-bit length for each pixel and it
is less in storage space than the original value which is 8-bits.
