Response to Treatment in a sample of Iraqi Patients with Prolactinoma
...Show More Authors
Abstract
<title>Background:

Hyperprolactinemia is a common endocrine abnormality caused by physiological factors like pregnancy and lactation, drug-induced factors like antipsychotics, pituitary adenomas that secrete prolactin, or stalk compression or section that reduces dopamine inhibition. Dopamine agonists cure most prolactinomas.

Objectives:

To assess response to treatment in micro versus macroprolactinoma.

Materials and Methods:

A total of 35 patients (20 female and 15 male) with documented hyperprolactinemia (serum prolactin above the assay-specific reference range) due to prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma attending the national diabetes center in Baghdad from April 2019 to March 2020 were selected. For each patient, we were recorded clinical presentation, drug history, age, body mass index, prolactin, T4, TSH, and pituitary MRI. After at least 6 months of therapy, prolactinoma patients were examined for cabergoline dosage, duration, and clinical, biochemical, and radiological response.

Results:

Cabergoline treatment with a dosage of 0.5–2.5 mg/week and a period of 6–52 months restores gonadal function and libido in most prolactinoma patients, with a stronger but nonsignificant response in micro vs macroprolactinoma (87.5% vs. 57% respectively). Cabergoline normalized menses in all microprolactinoma patients and 87.5% of macropros. Normalization of prolactin levels in 80% of prolactinoma patients, with microprolactinoma responding 95% vs 60%. gender, treatment length, or age did not affect prolactin response. 50% of surgery-radiotherapy patients experienced cabergoline-induced prolactin normalization, compared to 86% of medical therapy-only patients. Cabergoline shrank tumors in 74% of patients (80% in micro vs. 66% in macro), regardless of age, gender, length of treatment, or prior surgery/radiotherapy.

Conclusion:

patients with prolactinoma, cabergoline-induced clinical, biochemical, and radiological improvement in the majority of patients.

Taste Detection Thresholds in Relation to Salivary and Serum Zinc in Patients on Simvastatin Treatment
...Show More Authors

Background: Hyperlipidemia is an elevated fat (lipids), mostly cholesterol and triglycerides, in the blood. These lipids usually bind to proteins to remain circulated so-called lipoprotein. Aims of the study: To determine taste detection threshold and estimate the trace elements (zinc) in serum and saliva of those patients and compare all of these with healthy control subjects. Methods: Eighty subjects were incorporated in this study, thy were divided into two groups: forty patients on simvastatin treatment age between (35-60) years, and forty healthy control of age range between (35-60) years. Saliva was collected by non-stimulated technique within 10 minutes. Serum was obtained from each subject. Zinc was estimated in serum and saliva

Background: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is the most common painful oral mucosal disease, affecting approximately 20% of the population. RAS presents with a wide spectrum of severity ranging from a minor nuisance to complete debility. Many of factors thought to have been involved in its etiology; that might have at the same time a direct or indirect impact upon oxidant/antioxidant system and trigger free radicals production. The aim of this study was to determine the possible association of oxidant/total antioxidant status and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Subjects, materials and methods: The study consisted of thirty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and thirty healthy controls from which saliva and blood samples we

Status of HBeAg in association with other baseline tests in Iraqi patients with CHB
...Show More Authors

Chronic Hepatitis B(CHB) is a serious sequel after Hepatitis B Virus infection, although the rate of chronicity is inverse with age but it may be associated with a significant proportion of deaths related to cirrhosis and liver cancer. HBV serology and measurement of hepatocytic enzymes with viral load can predict disease prognosis and response to treatment. HBeAg refers to a high viral replication and associated with more infectivity to others. This study aimed to determine the impact of HBeAg status in chronically infected patients on various baseline tests. A total of 90 patients with CHB infection who were included in this study. Several standardized measures used for liver function tests, viral load and hepatitis B serological

This study was designed to compare the effect of two types of viral hepatitis A and E (HAV
and HEV) on liver functions in Iraqi individuals by the measurement of biochemical changes
associated with hepatitis.
The study performed on 58 HEV and 66 HAV infected patients compared with 28 healthy
subjects. The measured biochemical tests include total serum bilirubin, serum transminases (ALT
and AST) alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT).
The study showed that adolescent and young adults (17-29) years, were mostly affected by
HEV while children (5-12) years were frequently affected by HAV. The severity of liver damage in
HEV patients was higher than HAV patients as a result of high serum transa
