Some research reports that cognitive grammar (CG) theory has good contributions to teaching English as a foreign language. In this research, the researchers seek to apply this theory and its principles when teaching the simple present tense to Iraqi students who face difficulties in differentiating between the multiple usages of this tense. To achieve this objective, the researchers have conducted an experimental study on a group of 60 Iraqi students in the University of Baghdad, College of Education for Women. This study is an attempt to investigate the conceptual metaphor of UP and DOWN commonly used in Iraqi community. Some of the metaphorical expressions in Iraqi colloquial Arabicarewidely used by Iraqi speakers in everyday language. Ithas been analyzed by following the cognitive theory of metaphor (Lakoff& Johnson,1980).The study indicates that the Iraqi speakerexperiences more of the metaphorical expressions of UP and DOWN to referto many of the abstract concepts that shape his/her impression of everyday life situations.

هدف البحث الحالي الى قياس اسلوب الفكر المثالي عند طلبة قسم الكيمياء، كلية التربية للعلوم الصرفة ابن الهيثم. وقياس مدى الفكر المثالي حسب الصف الدراسي للمرحلة الجامعية. ولتحقيق هدفا البحث تم اتباع المنهج الوصفي. وتم تحديد مجتمع البحث بجميع طلبة قسم الكيمياء وللصفوف الاربعة ( الاولى ، الثانية، الثالثة، الرابعة) . وتم اختيار مجموعة من كل صف دراسي لتكون عينة للبحث الحالي. وتم اعداد اداة لقياس التفكير المثالي عند ع
