Finding Masculinity in the "Great War": An Analytical Study of A Long Long Way by Sebastian Barry Abstract This paper intends to show the relation between war and masculinity, through drawing a sketch of the masculine identity of the soldiers during the First World War (also known as the Great War). It studies the association between “ideal manhood” and wartime duties. The paper travels though the experience of Willie Dunne, a young Irish soldier in A Long Long Way (2005) by the Irish writer, Sebastian Barry. Through the paper, the researcher traces the social and familial pressures that lead Willie to enlist in the army, and to experience the atrocities of the First World War in order to search for his masculinity. Raywne Connell's concept of “hegemonic masculinity” is used to investigate how masculinity is represented in the selected novel and how war is considered a masculine field where society in general and parents in particular, push their sons to enlist in order to become real men.

Nadaraya-Watson Estimator a Smoothing Technique for Estimating Regression Function

The using of the parametric models and the subsequent estimation methods require the presence of many of the primary conditions to be met by those models to represent the population under study adequately, these prompting researchers to search for more flexible models of parametric models and these models were nonparametric models.

In this manuscript were compared to the so-called Nadaraya-Watson estimator in two cases (use of fixed bandwidth and variable) through simulation with different models and samples sizes.  Through simulation experiments and the results showed that for the first and second models preferred NW with fixed bandwidth fo

Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency: Phenotypic, biochemical, and molecular heterogeneity in a series of 47 Iraqi patients from a single center
...Show More Authors

Objectives Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) is an inherited autosomal recessive disease caused by pathogenic variants in the sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase-1 (SMPD1) gene, which encodes acid sphingomyelinase (ASM). ASMD has 3 broad phenotypes (type A, type A/B, and type B) characterized by the age of onset, symptomatology, and the rapidity of disease progression. The diagnosis of ASMD can be delayed or missed because of the wide spectrum of severity and its variable manifestations. Analysis of genotype-phenotype correlations can help to determine ASMD disease type and inform management. Here, we describe the clinical presentation of 47 patients with ASMD referred to a single center in Iraq since 2007, whose diagnosis was confirmed b

The Reality of Alternative Assessment for Teachers of the First Cycle of the Basic Education in the Sultanate of Oman: Use, Self-Efficacy, and Attitude
...Show More Authors

This study aims at identifying the reality of alternative assessment for teachers of the first cycle of the basic education in the Sultanate of Oman with respect to the degree of teachers' use of alternative assessment strategies, level of self-efficacy for alternative assessment strategies, and attitude towards alternative assessment, and their relationship with other variables. To achieve the aims of the study, a descriptive research approach was utilized. A 5-point self-rated questionnaire was developed. It consists of three sections: Actual use of alternative assessment strategies (21 items), self-efficacy for alternative assessment strategies (21 items), and attitude towards alternative assessment (27 items). The psychometric proper

First-Principles Analysis of Cr-Doped SrTiO3 Perovskite as Optoelectronic Materials
...Show More Authors

The influence of Cr3+ doping on the ground state properties of SrTiO3 perovskite was evaluated using GGA-PBE approximation. Computational modeling results infered an agreement with the previously published literature. The modification of electronic structure and optical properties due to Cr3+ introducing into SrTiO3 were investigated. Structural parameters assumed that Cr3+ doping alters the electronic structures of SrTiO3 by shifting the conduction band through lower energies for the Sr and Ti sites. Besides, results showed that the band gap was reduced by approximately 50% when presenting one Cr3+ atom into the SrTiO3 system and particularly positioned at Sr sites. Interestingly, substituting Ti site by Cr3+ led to eliminating the band ga

Performance of Different Concatenated Coding Schemes for CDMA System
...Show More Authors

In this paper different channel coding and interleaving schemes in DS/CDMA system over multipath fading channel were used. Two types of serially concatenated coding were presented. The first one composed of Reed-Solomon as outer code, convolutional code as inner code and the interleaver between the outer and inner codes and the second consist of convolutional code as outer code, interleaved in the middle and differential code as an inner code. Bit error rate performance of different schemes in multipath fading channel was analyzed and compared. Rack receiver was used in DS/CDMA receiver to combine multipath components in order to enhance the signal to noise ratio at the receiver.
