Biochemical Role of Blood Electrolytes in Old Iraqi Patients with COVID-19
...Show More Authors

Background: Age progression is regarded as a critical risk factor in morbidity and mortality because of a weakened immune system. Although various studies have dealt with electrolyte imbalance in COVID-19 patients, the outcomes of these studies were partially understood. Objective: The current study aims to determine some biochemical parameters in old Iraqi COVID-19 patients and highlight the outcomes according to the aging role in the development of COVID-19 by suggesting new mechanisms. Materials and methods: forty COVID-19 patients were enrolled in the current study and divided into two groups: Gm includes (20) men, and Gf includes  (20) women. The parameters (Na+, K+, Cl-, LDH, and Hb ) were determined in sera of patients and control groups, G1: healthy men and G2: healthy women. Results:  The results reported that the levels of sodium, chloride, and ( hemoglobin for men) were highly significantly decreased. In contrast, potassium level was highly significantly increased in Gm and Gf compared to G1 and G2, respectively, and hemoglobin level in women was decreased in Gf compared with G2. LDH activity did not significantly increase in Gm compared with G1, while it increased dramatically in Gf compared with G2. The difference between Gm and Gf was non-significant for sodium, potassium, chloride, and hemoglobin, but it was highly significant for lactate dehydrogenase. Conclusions: The present study proposed definite mechanisms to elucidate hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and hypochloremia in old COVID-19 patients by highlighting both COVID-19 complications and risk factors linked to age progression. At the same time, it revealed an interesting biochemical relationship between higher activity of LDH, hyponatremia, and hypochloremia in the same patients .

Abstract<p>The synthesis of ligands with N2S2 donor sets that include imine, an amide, thioether, thiolate moieties and their metal complexes were achieved. The new Schiff-base ligands; N-(2-((2,4-diphenyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)amino)ethyl)-2-((2-mercaptoethyl)thio)-acetamide (H2L1) and N-(2-((2,4-di-p-tolyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)amino)ethyl)-2-((2-mercaptoethyl)thio) acetamide (H2L2) were obtained from the reaction of amine precursors with 1,4-dithian-2-one in the presence of triethylamine as a base in the CHCl3 medium. A Comparison Between Different Susceptibility Test Methods to Evaluate the Antibacterial Activity of Olibanum and Alum Against the "Red Complex" Periodontal Pathogens
...Show More Authors

Testing the sensitivity of periodontal pathogens requires the selection of an easier and more reliable method to be used with such anaerobic bacteria that need a long period of time for growth. Natural materials are a new era of antibacterial agents to control periodontal infections. The aims of the current study were to test the antibacterial activity of two natural agents, namely olibanum and alum, against three types of red complex periodontal pathogens and compare the application of agar diffusion and microdilution methods for testing the susceptibility. Gingival crevicular fluid from pockets with chronic infections was sampled as a source for the three types of bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia

Improved throughput of Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) processor implementation over Koblitz curve k-163 on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)
...Show More Authors

The widespread use of the Internet of things (IoT) in different aspects of an individual’s life like banking, wireless intelligent devices and smartphones has led to new security and performance challenges under restricted resources. The Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) is the most suitable choice for the environments due to the smaller size of the encryption key and changeable security related parameters. However, major performance metrics such as area, power, latency and throughput are still customisable and based on the design requirements of the device.

The present paper puts forward an enhancement for the throughput performance metric by p

Antibiofilm Activity of Conocarpus erectus Leaves Extract and Assessment Its Effect on pelA and algD Genes on Multi-drug Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
...Show More Authors

Due to its various resistance mechanisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most prevalent opportunistic infection that kills hospitalized patients. Thus, therapeutic options become limited. Objective: The study aimed to estimate the antibiofilm effectiveness of Conocarpus erectus leaf extracts against MDR P. aeruginosa isolates and examines pelA and algD gene expression. Subjects and Methods: One hundred-fifty clinical samples were collected from five Baghdad hospitals between September 2021 and January 2022. Samples were grown on different mediums. Despite cetrimide agar's ability to detect P. aeruginosa, only 83 isolates developed at 42°C. VITEK 2 compact system identification followed. This study examined 83 of P. aeruginosa isolates for r

Reducing the Purification Period of Congo Red Dye Solution By Using Co-Exposure to Ultraviolet and Green Laser as A Photocatalysit Source
...Show More Authors

Attempts were made over the years to achieve economic and easy methods for water purification. This could well save time, cost, and earn a good process quality for many countries. This study aims to enhance the purification process parameters for Congo red dye polluted water  and introduce a developed methodology with an impact on many associated parameters such as the time for water purification process.  The research  proposes  a method to achieve this time reduction by mixing gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) (prepared by chemical reduction method) with Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) (prepared by sol-gel techniques). The resulting mixture is incorporated into PVA host to synthesize a hard disk used as a purification d
