يستعرض البحث الجرائم التي ارتكبها تنظيم داعش في محافظة نينوى منذ سيطرته عليها واعلان دولة الخلافة في التاسع والعشرين من حزيران 2014، وحتى انطلاق عمليات التحرير في السابع عشر من تشرين الاول عام 2016، بالاعتماد على التقارير الصادرة عن المفوضية العليا لحقوق الإنسان في العراق، فضلاً عن تقارير فريق التحقيق التابع للأمم المتحدة (يونيتاد) والوكالات الإخبارية، بهدف توثيق الانتهاكات الجسيمة التي طالت السكان المدنيين في نينوى، ولا سيّما الأقليات الدينية والعرقية. إن جرائم داعش في نينوى لا تعد ولا تحصى، لذلك ركز البحث على جرائم المقابر الجماعية والتهجير القسري وتدمير التراث الثقافي والديني، وأظهر أن تلك الجرائم لم تكن عشوائية، بل جاءت ضمن سياسة ممنهجة هدفت لتغيير البنية الاجتماعية والثقافية في نينوى وعموم العراق، وهو ما دفع المجتمع الدولي إلى تصنيفها كجرائم إبادة جماعية وجرائم ضد الإنسانية. خلص البحث إلى ضرورة تعزيز آليات المحاسبة الدولية، وتوثيق الجرائم بشكل دقة وتفصيل، لضمان تحقيق العدالة للضحايا، ومنع تكرار مثل تلك الانتهاكات في المستقبل. وأوصى بضرورة دعم جهود المصالحة المجتمعية وإعادة الإعمار، لضمان تعافي نينوى من آثار الاحتلال الداعشي.
