A comparative Isothermal and Kinetic Study of the Adsorption of Lead (II) from Solution by Activated Carbon and Bentonite
...Show More Authors

This work is aiming to study and compare the removal of lead (II) from simulated wastewater by activated carbon and bentonite as adsorbents with particle size of 0.32-0.5 mm. A mathematical model was applied to describe the mass transfer kinetic.

The batch experiments were carried out to determine the adsorption isotherm constants for each adsorbent, and five isotherm models were tested to choose the best fit model for the experimental data. The pore, surface diffusion coefficients and mass transfer coefficient were found by fitting the experimental data to a theoretical model. Partial differential equations were used to describe the adsorption in the bulk and solid phases. These equations were simplified and then solved using a technique with finite elements and orthogonal collection method for the bulk fluid and intraparticle phases, respectively. The results obtained from this work show that the equilibrium adsorption isotherms are favorable, and fitted well using the Freundlich model for activated carbon and bentonite. The activated carbon has a high value of pore diffusion coefficient, Dp, while bentonite has a high value of surface diffusion coefficient, Ds. This indicates that the pore diffusion controls the adsorption process for activated carbon, and the surface diffusion controls the adsorption process for bentonite. The activated carbon was more efficient than bentonite in removing of lead (II) from simulated industrial wastewater.

Effect of Very Early Atorvastatin Initiation for Acute Myocardial Infarction on Creatine Kinase release
...Show More Authors

Background : It has been suggested that pretreatment with a statin agent prior to
myocardial infarction limits myocardial
creatine kinase release, and thus may act to
limit myocardial infarct size in humans.
Objective : To examine the effect of very
early statin initiation for acute myocardial
infarction (AMI), to the extent of
myonecrosis as manifested by peak serum
creatine kinase levels.
Methods : Patients with AMI admitted to AlKindy teaching hospital cardiac care unit
from 1st February 2007 to 28th February
2008, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria
cited in the present study, were randomly
assigned into two study groups. The statin
group patients have received a single oral
dose of 40 mg

Effect of Some Demographic Changes on Some Oral Immune Aspects in Periodontal Disease Patients
...Show More Authors

Periodontal diseases (PD) are worldwide diseases of humans either in childhood or adults. The present study aimed to find the correlation between some demographic and saliva immunological factors including the determination of saliva TLR-2, IL6, CRP, and α- amylase in patients with periodontal diseases. For this purpose, 60 patients out of which 33were males and 27 were females participated in this study from different Dental treatment Centers (Amirya Specialized Dental Center and Almaamon Specialized Dental Center ) in Baghdad/ Iraq, for the period starting from November / 2021 to February / 2022. Both age ranges for patients and control are (13-70) years, and patients’ mean ages are 34.29±15.01. Additionally, the c

Enhancement of Wheat Leaf Images Using Fuzzy-Logic Based Histogram Equalization to Recognize Diseases
...Show More Authors

The detection of diseases affecting wheat is very important as it relates to the issue of food security, which poses a serious threat to human life. Recently, farmers have heavily relied on modern systems and techniques for the control of the vast agricultural areas. Computer vision and data processing play a key role in detecting diseases that affect plants, depending on the images of their leaves. In this article, Fuzzy- logic based Histogram Equalization (FHE) is proposed to enhance the contrast of images. The fuzzy histogram is applied to divide the histograms into two subparts of histograms, based on the average value of the original image, then equalize them freely and independently to conserve the brightness of the image. The prop

Anatomical differences of Cerebellar vermismeasurement values in healthy adult men andwomen using MRI images
...Show More Authors

Background: e cerebellum is divided into two hemispheres and contains a narrow midline zone called thevermis. A set of large folds are conventionally used to divide the overall structure into ten smaller "lobules". evermis receives fibres from the trunk and proximal portions of limbs, But the question is that does the cerebellum have the same measurementvalues in males and females of the same age?Material and method: e present study used 80 sectional brain MRI images (40: males, 40: females); 35-50 years old as indices of size for thevermian structures of the Cerebellum. is middle age group was taken because as known generally it could be neither an age of growth as inthe young nor of atrophy as in old individuals. e aim rega

Evaluation of Interferon Alpha (IFN-α) in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Iraq
...Show More Authors

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial chronic systemic autoimmune disease. It is characterized by a lack of immune tolerance to autoantigens such as nuclear antigens. The aim of the study is to assess the interferon-alpha (IFN-α) serum level in Iraqi patients with SLE and determine its potential relation to different clinical and laboratory parameters and disease activity. 100 SLE patients were all females and with a mean of age 31.3 ± 10 years (16-63years) and disease duration of 5.8 ± 3.7years (1 month to 15 years). The average of SLEDAI score ranged from 2 to 22 with a mean of (8.53 ±3.42). Proteinuria, ESR, creatinine and AST were significantly higher (65% vs. 10% and 0.62±0.11 vs. 0.70±0.14 mg/dl resp

Energy Absorption Evaluation of CFRP-Strengthened Two-Spans Reinforced Concrete Beams under Pure Torsion
...Show More Authors

For more than a decade, externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites successfully utilized in retrofitting reinforced concrete structural elements. The function of CFRP reinforcement in increasing the ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) beam is essential in such members. Flexural and shear behaviors, ductility, and confinement were the main studied properties that used the CFRP as a strengthening material. However, limited attention has been paid to investigate the energy absorption of torsion strengthening of concrete members, especially two-span concrete beams. Hence, the target of this work is to investigate the effectiveness of CFRP-strengthening technique with regard to energy absorption of two-span RC

Association of Helicobacter pylori Infection with Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Dohuk Governorate, Iraq
...Show More Authors

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common human pathogens in the world. Several studies that have investigated the correlation between H. pylori infection and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) found that H. pylori infection is more frequent in the patients, while the results of other studies were unclear. This paper aims to investigate the interrelation between the infection with H. pylori and type 2 DM in Dohuk governorate, Iraq. Eighty four diabetes patients (41 males, 43 females) and 92 healthy controls were involved in this study. H. pylori status was assessed in serum samples by using ELISA test.  Out of the 84 patients,

FAT-based adaptive backstepping control of an electromechanical system with an unknown input coefficient
...Show More Authors

This paper is focused on orthogonal function approximation technique FAT-based adaptive backstepping control of a geared DC motor coupled with a rotational mechanical component. It is assumed that all parameters of the actuator are unknown including the torque-current constant (i.e., unknown input coefficient) and hence a control system with three motor control modes is proposed: 1) motor torque control mode, 2) motor current control mode, and 3) motor voltage control mode. The proposed control algorithm is a powerful tool to control a dynamic system with an unknown input coefficient. Each uncertain parameter/term is represented by a linear combination of weighting and orthogonal basis function vectors. Chebyshev polynomial is used
