Evaluation of the Potential Role of Serum Selenium in Diabetic Patients
...Show More Authors

Background: The altered status of some essential trace elements observed in diabetes could have deleterious influences on the health of the diabetics. Objectives: To estimate and study the potential role of serum Selenium in type 1, type 2 diabetics and healthy subjects; and its relation with lipid profile and glycemic index. Methods: A case control designed study was carried out at the National Diabetes Center (NDC) / Al-Mustansiria University; on a total of 94 participants formed of 32 type 1 diabetics, 32 type 2 diabetics and 30 healthy control participants. Data collected about age, sex and BMI; also, blood samples examined for FPG, HbA1C, serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, serum triglyceride and sera were examined for Selenium by using atomic absorption technique. Results: Type 1 and type 2 diabetic groups show respectively 75% and 65% decrement in S. Selenium, <70 µg/L. The mean of S. Selenium, age, BMI, waist/hip ratio, FPG, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, Non-HDL and atherogenic index (total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol) for the type 1 and type 2 diabetics shows statistically significant differences from control group. Type 1 diabetics versus type 2 diabetics shows statistically insignificant differences between mean of the S.Selenium, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and atherogenic index (t-test, P > 0.05) while the mean of FPG, HbA1c and triglyceride show highly statistical significant differences (t-test, < 0.001).Simple linear correlation and regression analysis of FPG, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, Non-HDL and atherogenic index of the studied groups shows weak to moderate correlation with their serum Selenium levels. Conclusions: The inverse relationship between Selenium status and glucose tolerance suggest the potential role of Selenium in diabetics. Serum Selenium levels show high statistically significant differences from healthy subjects; while the differences between type1 and type 2 diabetic groups’ shows no statistically significant differences. Inverse correlations and regression were noticed between S.Selenium levels of all studied groups with their FPG, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, Non-HDL and atherogenic index. Low S.Selenium and HDL-cholesterol plus an increase in total cholesterol, non-HDL and atherogenic index enhance risk of cardiovascular diseases progression among the diabetics.

Background A case-control study was performed to explore eight pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, namely interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1Ra (IL-1 receptor antagonist), IL-12, IL-17A, IL-31, IL-33, CXCL10 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10), and CXCL16, with the aim to understand their role in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) pathogenesis and evaluate their utility as markers to differentiate between diseased and healthy individuals. Among these cytokines, IL-31 and CXCL16 have not been well studied in AS. Patients and methods The study included 94 male patients with AS and 91 age-matched control males. Interleukin and chemokine levels were measured using ELISA kits. Results Serum levels of IL-17A, CXCL10, and CXCL16 were significantly ele

The Role of Aspirin as Otoprotective Agent in Patients Receiving Amikacin Therapy
...Show More Authors

Objective: To investigate and prove that aspirin
protects, or at least attenuates amikacin ototoxicity in
humans.
Method: This study was conducted in 60 patients that
completed all
requirements .The patients were divided into two
groups:
• Control group: receive placebo treatment.
• Drug–treated group: They receive aspirin
coated tablets (1.5gm/ day), 500mg 8 hourly.
Both groups had similar aspects regarding the gender,
age and weight. The duration of therapy was 7 days
and dosage of amikacin was 1gm/day (500mg 12
hourly).
Results: Comparison of Audiometry test in
Ear/Nose/Throat (E.N.T.) Department (Pure Tone
Audiometry) at 1000 Hertz (Hz), 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz,
and 8000 Hz showed sig

Correlation of Kidney Injury Molecule-1 and Nephrin Levels in Iraqi Patients with Diabetic Nephropathy
...Show More Authors

Diabetic nephropathy is characterized by persistent microalbuminuria and metabolic changes that decline renal functions. Researchers have been prompted to explore new biomarkers such as KIM-1 and nephrin that may enhance the identification of disease. Objective: To Evaluate biomarker levels of kidney injury molculre-1 (KIM-1) concentration and nephrin as early and sensitive markers of nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. Method: One hundred T2DM patients were included in a cross-sectional study at the specialized center for endocrinology and diabetes, Baghdad. The first group includes 50 diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients, and the second group includes 50 T2DM patients without DN. Biochemical and clinical parameters were reported for pa

STUDY OF LYSYL OXIDASE-1 AND KIDNEY FUNCTION IN SERA OF IRAQI PATIENTS WITH DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY
...Show More Authors

This study aimed to compare lysyl oxidase-1 level in diabetic patients with and without renal dysfunction, that LOX-1 may be an indicator for the early stage of diabetic nephropathy (DN). In addition to finding it is a relationship with kidney functions in Iraqi diabetic patients with and without renal dysfunction. Blood was obtained from 25 healthy individuals as a control group (G1), 25 diabetic patients with renal dysfunction, and 25 diabetic patients without renal dysfunction. Age range 40-60 years for all subjects. BMI (25-27) Kg/m2 . The serum was used for the analysis of LOX-1, FBG, urea, creatinine and uric acid. Whole blood is used for the determination of HbA1C. Results of FBG and HbA1C revealed a significant increase in G2 and G

Changes in Serum Levels of Lipid Profile Parameters and Proteins in Toxoplasma gondii Seropositive Patients
...Show More Authors

The influence of Toxoplasma gondii on some biochemical parameters has lately gained an increasing attention. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of some biochemical parameters in Toxoplasma positive and negative subjects. An analytical case–control study was achieved in Baghdad for the period from October 2018 until March 2019. Forty nine females participated in this study, with an age range of 18-55 years. The participants were separated into two groups, namely Toxoplasma positive subjects (n=21) and Toxoplasma negative subjects (n=28), based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blood and serum samples were collected from all subjects to evaluate the serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lip

The Variations in Saliva and Serum Total Peroxidases System's Activity in Patients with Different Oral Tumors
...Show More Authors

Salivary peroxidases have biological functions of particular importance to oral health. The aim of this paper is to shed the light on saliva and serum total peroxidases activity as well as the activity of each of salivary peroxidase (SPO) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in patients with oral tumors. The studied participants were divided into two groups: the first group included 18 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients and 20 age and gender-matched healthy controls while the second group consisted of 20 oral ossifying fibroma patients and 23 age and gender-matched healthy controls. Total peroxidases activity was determined, and its specific activity was calculated in serum and whole mixed saliva as well as in the supernatant and pellet fractions
