Obesity, Glycemic and Hormonal Criteria Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
...Show More Authors

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy affecting women, at reproductive age. PCOS is a chronic hyperandrogenic state that has many significant short-term and long-term implications for patients such as oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, infertility, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, increased risk of endometrial cancer, and hirsutism. Objectives: To evaluate the obesity and glycemic criteria among women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Method: A case control designed study was carried out at the National Diabetes Center (NDC) / Al-Mustansiryia University; on 50 participants formed the PCOS group and 50 healthy control participants. Data collected about age, age at menarche and BMI. Also, blood samples examined for FPG and 2-h OGTT test carried out for all the participants. Moreover hormonal assessment for the LH, FSH and total testosterone were done for all participants. Results : PCOS group women age and age at menarche were 27.62 ± 5.74 and 12.0 ± 1.06 years; vs. the control group were 25.42 ± 4.94 and 11.64 ± 0.69 years respectively. All PCOS group were experienced signs and symptoms of ovarian dysfunction, and infertility while the control group did not experience any of such evidences. BMI showed significant difference between study groups (t-test (P < 0.05)); 98% of the PCOS group was obese vs. 58% of the control group. The waist/hip ratio showed insignificant difference (t-test (P > 0.05). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) showed insignificant difference between the study groups (t-test (P >0.05); about 18% of the PCOS group was prediabetic (Impaired Fasting Glucose, IFG) (100-125mg/dl) and 6% was diabetic (>126mg/dl) whereas the entire control group was normoglycemic. The OGTT showed significant difference between the study groups (ttest (P < 0.05)); about 22% of the PCOS group was prediabetic (Impaired Glucose Tolerance, IGT) (140- 199mg/dl) and 6% was diabetic (>200mg/dl) whereas the entire control group was normoglycemic. PCOS group showed highly significant elevation in the LH level vs. the control group by about four folds (t-test (P < 0.05)). Also, FSH showed similar elevation by about two folds among the PCOS group vs. the control group (t-test (P < 0.05)). Moreover the LH/FSH ratio was elevated by about two folds among the PCOS group vs. the control group (t-test (P < 0.05)). Total serum testosterone of the PCOS group showed significant raise vs. the control group (t-test (P < 0.05)). Whole the PCOS group had A total testosterone level >60 ng/dL and in contrary the entire control group didn't show any elevation >60ng/dl. Conclusion: obesity of android (central) type was frequent and prevalent among PCOS women. About 20-28% of PCOS women was prediabetic or diabetic due to insulin resistance and decreased insulin sensitivity. Hormonal assay of LH, FSH, LH/FSH ratio and total testosterone were all significantly elevated by two folds or more among the PCOS women. It is not essential that a woman who had polycystic ovaries by ultrasound to have PCOS

Serum Lipoprotein (A) in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome
...Show More Authors

Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is the
most common rheumatic cause of diffuse pain and
multiple regional musculoskeletal pain and disability.
Objective: is to assess the contribution of serum
lipoprotein (A) in the pathogenesis of FMS patients.
Methods: One hundred twenty two FMS patients
were compared with 60 healthy control individuals
who were age and sex matched. All FMS features and
criteria are applied for patients and controls; patients
with secondary FMS were excluded. Serum
Lipoprotein (A): [Lp(A)], body mass index (BMI), &
s.lipid profile were determined for both groups.
Results: There was a statistical significant difference
between patients &controls in serum lipoprotein

In vivo Study of Effects of Citric from Aspergillus Niger and Lemon Juice on the Hormonal Level and Histoarchitecture of the Testis
...Show More Authors

To study the qualitative changes in testis tissue after carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) administration and to determine whether citric acid (CA) has a protective effect against testis damage induced by CCl4. This study compared two types of CA by measuring the histoarchitecture of the testis and serum levels of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone on mice. One of the most produced organic acid is citric acid. In this study, CA produced by microbial fermentation using Aspergillus Niger 5mg/kg and derived from citrus limon 400mg/kg (lemon). Mice were treated with daily intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection for seven successive days after randomly separated into six groups: (1) control, (2) CCl4 (0.02%), (3) limon citric acid (400 mg/kg), (4) CCl4 (

The Necessity of Teaching Diabetic Patients the Correct way of Insulin Administration: A Clinical Trial to Improve Glycemic Control
...Show More Authors

Background: It is important to achieve good glycemic control to avoid long-term diabetic complications. It has been largely debated about the role of correct way of insulin administration to get the desired glycemic control.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of teaching diabetic patients who are on insulin therapy the correct way of injecting insulin and its effect on glycemic control.
Methods: A non randomized clinical trial with 820 diabetic patients on insulin therapy on whom A1 c estimation was performed before and after three months of teaching them the right injection technique.
Results : Sixty seven patients (8.17%) had A1 c 6.5% before they were enrolled in the study while the majority (753 patents, 91.82%) had A1 c 6.5%

Anti-obesity effect of simvastatin and omega-3 and its combination on obese model male Wistar rats
...Show More Authors

Strategies to reduce obesity have become main priority for many health institution and health staff around the world, as the prevalence of obesity has risen and exacerbated in most of the world mainly because of the modern life style which tend to be more sedentary with an increase eating unhealthy fast western food. Many years ago, the lipid-lowering drug simvastatin; and omega-3 were considered as a traditional lipid-lowering drug that have been well-documented to possess anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective and triglyceride-lowering properties; and their co-administration may demonstrate a complementary effect in lowering patients' triglycerides and total cholesterol to treat atherosclerosis. Many previous studies have

Comparative Study for Risk Criteria of Al-Qudus Plant between the Present and Planning of MOE
...Show More Authors

The main function of a power system is to supply the customer load demands as economically as possible. Risk criterion is the probability of not meeting the load. This paper presents a methodology to assess probabilistic risk criteria of Al-Qudus plant before and after expansion; as this plant consists of ten generating units presently and the Ministry Of Electricity (MOE) is intending to compact four units to it in order to improve the performance of Iraqi power system especially at Baghdad region. The assessment is calculated by a program using Matlab programming language; version 7.6. Results show that the planned risk is (0.003095) that is (35 times) less than that in the present plant risk; (0.1091); which represents respectable imp

Background: Thymus vulgaris is a plant rich in essential oils acclaimed for the management of oxidative stress and inflammation in the organs. Meanwhile, the heavy metal lead is widely distributed in nature and continued exposure to lead acetate causes reduced fertility. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of T. vulgaris on ovarian and uterine structural and functional characteristics in female rats exposed to lead acetate. Methods: Three groups of 18 mature Wistar albino female rats (Rattus norvegicus), 15 weeks old and weighing between 200 and 210 g, were established and handled for 60 days as follows: Group A (control group) received 0.5 mL of distilled water (DW) daily; group B received 5 mg/kg body weight (BW
