Hypomagnesemia in Iraqi Diabetic Patients and Healthy Controls: An Exploratory study
...Show More Authors

Background: Diabetes mellitus has been suggested
to be the most common metabolic disorder
associated with magnesium deficiency, and because
available data suggest that adverse outcomes are
associated with hypomagnesemia, it is prudent that
routine surveillance for hypomagnesemia be done
and the condition be treated whenever possible.
Aim of the study:To explore the serum Mg
concentrations of diabetic patients and healthy
controls in our locality.
Mehtods: One hundred and forty four diabetic
patients (22 with type I and 122 with type II diabetes
mellitus) recruited from the outpatient diabetes clinic
at the Specialized Center For Endocrine DiseasesBaghdad (62 patients), National Diabetes Center-Al
Mustansiria University (20 patients), and from
private endocrinologic practice clinics in Baghdad
(62 patients), during the period from 1st October
2005 to 30th April 2006. Ninety non-diabetic healthy
controls matched for age and sex were participated in
this study. Exclusion criteria for both groups
included diarrhea and loop diuretics. None were
taking Mg supplements. Level of Mg and Albumin
were determined spectrophotometerically in the
same serum samples.
Results: Mean serum Mg concentrations of the
diabetics was significantly lower than in controls
(p<0.001). Serum albumin was not a significant
predictor of serum Mg neither among diabetic
patients (r = 0.005) nor control subjects (r = 0.139).
In 88.9% of the diabetic patients and 11.1% of the
control subjects serum Mg concentrations were
below the normal reference range of 0.70 mmol/L.
The prevalence is increased when hypomagnesemia
is defined by a reference limit of 0.75 mmol/L
(98.6% and 28.9 % for diabetics and controls,
respectively), a further higher prevalence among
controls (91.1 %) was noted when 0.80 mmol/L is
adopted as the lower normal limit. All diabetics
(100%) and controls (100%) were identified as
hypomagnesemic with a lower reference limit of
0.90 mmol/L.
Conclusion: The tremendous hot climate of ours,
can be suggested as an influential cause for increased
Mg losses, and may provide a coherent explanation
for the exceedingly high prevalence of
hypomagnesemia observed in diabetic and control
subjects participated in this study. Which therefore
may suggest an inevitable requirement for
magnesium supplementation to avert
hypomagnesemia, not only among diabetics, but as
well for controls, particularly through the hot
summer episode

Comparative Study of Sevelamer Carbonate and Calcium Carbonate on Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Parathyroid Hormone in Hemodialysis Iraqi Patients
...Show More Authors

Fibroblast growth factor-23, play an important role in atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction and vascular calcification. Sevelamer can improve vascular calcification, serum uric acid, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and Fibroblast growth factor-23. Aim of study Assessment the effect of sevelamer as phosphate binder against calcium carbonate on Fibroblast growth factor-23. Methods A prospective open-labelled study that included patients on hemodialysis. A total of 72 patients were screened, only 53 patients completed the 10 week period. Adults patients with serum phosphate as> 5.5 mg/dl were included. There were Group1: Includes 28 patients (19 males and 9 females receiving sevelamer carbonate (Renvela) tablet. The serum protein test includes measurement of the level of total protein(albumin, globulin). Fetuin-A is a blood protein made in liver. It can inhibit insulin receptor, enhance insulin sensitivity and make the individuals more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, then disorder in lipid profile (Total cholesterol(TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), Triglyceride(TG) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c) . To evaluate Fetuin-A, total protein, albumin, globulin, HbAlc and lipid profile in 200 adult and elderly Iraqi patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were taken and compare them with 200 subjects as a healthy control. The laboratory analysis(for patients and

Medication Safety in Patients under 18 Years Old; a Retrospective Study based on Iraqi Pharmacovigilance Center Database
...Show More Authors

Medication safety is an important part of the comprehensive patient safety term. Medication safety is gaining more attention as the World Health Organization set the goal of decreasing medication harm by (50%) for the next 5 years when launching the third global challenge. Studying medication safety in the risk groups such as young ages, children are crucial to learn more about the effect of medicines in this risk group since they are not included in the clinical trials. Adverse drug reaction is defined as any harm resulted from the drug itself during medical process journey, while medication errors are any harm resulted from the treatment process rather than the drug or it is the result of the failure in a step of the treatment process

Background: Leukemia is a group of malignant disorders
associated with increased numbers of blood white blood
cells. Acute leukemia occurs at all ages. Because zinc
influences many body systems and functions, zinc is an
essential nutrient for tissue growth, cellular division,
protein synthesis DNA and RNA replication it also ought to
play a critical role in the growth of tumor. In this study,
serum zinc was estimated in leukemic patients and
compared with healthy subjects.
Methods: The subjects in the present study were; fourtyfour depressed patients aged (14-48 year), thirty-one
apparently healthy subjects were selected as control group.
Their sex and age were comparable to that of patients.
