Hypomagnesemia in Iraqi Diabetic Patients and Healthy Controls: An Exploratory study
...Show More Authors

Background: Diabetes mellitus has been suggested
to be the most common metabolic disorder
associated with magnesium deficiency, and because
available data suggest that adverse outcomes are
associated with hypomagnesemia, it is prudent that
routine surveillance for hypomagnesemia be done
and the condition be treated whenever possible.
Aim of the study:To explore the serum Mg
concentrations of diabetic patients and healthy
controls in our locality.
Mehtods: One hundred and forty four diabetic
patients (22 with type I and 122 with type II diabetes
mellitus) recruited from the outpatient diabetes clinic
at the Specialized Center For Endocrine DiseasesBaghdad (62 patients), National Diabetes Center-Al
Mustansiria University (20 patients), and from
private endocrinologic practice clinics in Baghdad
(62 patients), during the period from 1st October
2005 to 30th April 2006. Ninety non-diabetic healthy
controls matched for age and sex were participated in
this study. Exclusion criteria for both groups
included diarrhea and loop diuretics. None were
taking Mg supplements. Level of Mg and Albumin
were determined spectrophotometerically in the
same serum samples.
Results: Mean serum Mg concentrations of the
diabetics was significantly lower than in controls
(p<0.001). Serum albumin was not a significant
predictor of serum Mg neither among diabetic
patients (r = 0.005) nor control subjects (r = 0.139).
In 88.9% of the diabetic patients and 11.1% of the
control subjects serum Mg concentrations were
below the normal reference range of 0.70 mmol/L.
The prevalence is increased when hypomagnesemia
is defined by a reference limit of 0.75 mmol/L
(98.6% and 28.9 % for diabetics and controls,
respectively), a further higher prevalence among
controls (91.1 %) was noted when 0.80 mmol/L is
adopted as the lower normal limit. All diabetics
(100%) and controls (100%) were identified as
hypomagnesemic with a lower reference limit of
0.90 mmol/L.
Conclusion: The tremendous hot climate of ours,
can be suggested as an influential cause for increased
Mg losses, and may provide a coherent explanation
for the exceedingly high prevalence of
hypomagnesemia observed in diabetic and control
subjects participated in this study. Which therefore
may suggest an inevitable requirement for
magnesium supplementation to avert
hypomagnesemia, not only among diabetics, but as
well for controls, particularly through the hot
summer episode

Serodiffusion of Helicobacter Pylori and HAV in Patients Attending Two Centers in Baghdad
...Show More Authors

Background: Helicobacters are motile curved, oxidase and catalase positive,
gram negative rods similar in morphology to vibrios. The cells have polar flagella
and are often attached at their ends given pairs "S" shapes or seagull
appearance.
Object i ves: The present study was undertaken to estimate the serodiffusion of
H. pylori and hepatitis A virus (HAV) in 300 patients attending two centers in
Baghdad.
Metthods:: HAV was determined by the detection of HAV-IgM in the serum samples. Detection of H. pylori was by ELISA and endoscopic examination.
Resul t s: The serodiffusion of H. pylori was 40% (n=120). Out of the 120
patients infected with H. pylori, 50(41 .6%) patients were diagnosed clinically to

Asemi-Empirical Study of the Adsorption of Some Organic Pollutants on Modified Iraqi Clays
...Show More Authors

In this work semi–empirical method (PM3) calculations are carried out by (MOPAC) computational packages have been employed to calculate the molecular orbital's energies for some organic pollutants. The long– chain quaternary ammonium cations called Iraqi Clays (Bentonite – modified) are used to remove these organic pollutants from water, by adding a small cationic surfactant so as to result in floes which are agglomerates of organobentonite to remove organic pollutants. This calculation which suggests the best surface active material, can be used to modify the adsorption efficiency of aniline , phenol, phenol deriviatives, Tri methyl glycine, ester and pecticides , on Iraqi Clay (bentonite) by comparing the theoretical results w

Study the expression level of beta 2 microglobulin gene on hepatitis C patients before and after treatment with interferon
...Show More Authors

This study has been carried out to evaluate the expression level of beta 2 microglobulin gene on patients infected by hepatitis C virus before and after treatment with interferon. The study included 117 hepatitis C patients comprising as 63 pre-treated patients, the range of age was between 20-65 year with a mean age of 48.12 ± 16.1 and 54 post-treated patients with age range was between 23-63 year with the mean of 46.1 ± 18.1. Also it was found that more than half of patients were located within third and fourth decade i.e. 30-49 year, with a percentage of 52.4% and 55.6 % for pre-treatment and post-treatment patients respectively. Moreover , regarding both groups, males are more than females with the ratio of ( 3.2:1) among p

This research aims to apply the Performance Focused Activity Based Costing System in the offices of scientific and advisory services at the University of Technology for the purpose of measuring the cost of services provided by these offices in order to reduce costs. To test the hypothesis of the research, the research was applied in the consulting offices of the University of Technology through the financial statements for the year ending 12/31/2017 of the Scientific and Consulting Services Office of the University of Technology, because the data of these years were issued and audited by the Federal Office of Financial Supervision.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is one of the most common diseases , so in this study the serum level of malondialdehyde and its relationship with metanephrine was investigated in acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients over one month of treatment. Some biochemical parameters (serum glucose , total serum protein , malondialdehyde ,vitamin C, and metanephrine) changed as well as white blood cell count and blood hemoglobinlevelswere analyzed in sixty patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia over one month of treatment compared to healthy control group.Statistically significant increases (p<0.01) in white blood cell (WBC) count, mean concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p< 0.05) and metanephrine (p< 0.001) were observed in

Background: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is an inflammatory, systemic rheumatic condition that mostly affects the axial skeleton. Tenascin-C (TN-C) is a hexameric glycoprotein of considerable size, upregulated in many inflammatory conditions, while Interleukin-17 (IL-17) a cytokine that plays an important role in SpA symptoms. Objective: to investigate the upregulation between the serum levels of TN-C and IL-17 in Iraqi axSpA patients and the disease characteristics. Patients and Methods: Seventy-four axSpA patients and 28 matched controls were studied. Fifty-four patients received a tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) and 20 did not. Serum TN-C and IL-17 concentrations were determined using the ELISA technique. The Bath Ankyl

Lipid Profile and Fasting Blood Sugar Analysis in Patients with Cholelithiasis
...Show More Authors

Cholelithiasis is one of the commonest surgical problems and one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases throughout the world but its pathogenesis remains unclear. Many theories have been proposed forward to explain the mechanism of stone formation. It is not fully clear if symptomatic gallstone disease is associated with a specific pattern of some biochemical abnormalities, as lipid profile and fasting blood sugar in serum of patients.

This study was designed to estimate lipid profile and fasting blood sugar in the sera of patients with cholelithiasis in comparison with normal individuals (control).

In this study, 104(male=16, female=88) were symptomatic gallstone patients (aged 42.79± 12.18 years), and 38(male=6
