Association between periodontitis and acquired coronary heart disease
...Show More Authors

Background: The association between oral microbial infection and systemic disease is not a new concept. A major confounding issue is that oral infections often are only one of the many important factors that can influence systemic diseases .Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the periodontal health status of patients with acquired coronary heart disease. Type of the study: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study group consisted of 200 patients with an age range (35-70) years, having coronary heart disease .This study group were compared to a control group of non-coronary heart disease (200 individuals ) matching with age and gender. The oral parameters were examined including the periodontal conditions, assessment of periodontal loss of attachment as well as the missing teeth according to the World Health Organization criteria (1997)(1) were followed for diagnosis and recording of oral health status. Results: Results of the present study show that the total sample had a highly significantly periodontitis and periodontal loss of attachment with advancing age (P<0.01), while no statistically significant differences were found between males and females with periodontal condition and periodontal loss of attachment among the study group (P>0.05), while there was significant differences among their corresponding controls (P<0.05). High percentage of missing teeth was recorded among the study and control group. Highly statistically significant differences were seen between study and control groups in all the degree of severity related with periodontal conditions (P<0.001).Conclusion: The data showed that 50.5%, 35% of the control group were with periodontal disease and loss of attachment respectively compared with study group 68%, 58.5% . The present study indicate that periodontal disease more common among patients with CHD than among controls matched for age and gender. Thus the possibility that chronic oral infection or similar factor may he positively associated with CHD at least in form patients susceptible to CHD.Although causality cannot be inferred from the present data, the observed association between chronic oral infections and CHD for susceptible patients in the present study can not be excluded

Background: Secretory Immunoglobulin A (SIgA) is a subclass of Immunoglobulin A (IgA), It is an antibody that plays an important role in mucosal immunity. It is the main immunoglobulin found in mucous secretions from mammary glands, tear glands and salivary glands, every pathologic process in the body involves the immune system, and periodontal inflammation is one of them and is not an exception. Material and methods: this study was consisted of 60 healthy male participants of an age ranged between (35-50) years old ; 25 of them with generalized moderate chronic periodontists(Clinical Attachment Loss equal to 3-4mm at ≥ 30% of the sites; 20 participants with plaque induced gingivitis and 15 participants had clinically healthy pe

Measurement of serum Superoxide dismutase levels in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and chronic periodontitis
...Show More Authors

ABSTRACT Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most important reproductive and endocrine disorders in women at reproductive age. It's associated with metabolic disorder, obesity, insulin resistance and oxidative stress chronic periodontitis and PCOS both of them associated with low chronic grade of inflammation. The prevalence of periodontal disease seems to be higher in women with PCOS. Superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) is an important circulating marker and protecting enzyme helping the body tissues to get rid of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the tissue. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to measure and compare the levels of (SOD) among group of chronic periodontitis patients with PCOS, group

Total no. of patient (100) stool samples were collected, during the period from February to the end of May of 2008, for children under two years old suffering from non-bloody and bloody diarrhea at (Children Welfare Teaching Hospital) in Baghdad. The study evaluates the relationship between etiological agent of diarrhea and sex, age group, type of feeding, presence of blood in stool of the patients. All samples were examined microscopically to identify parasitic agent and serological test for Rotavirus to identify viral infection, also biochemical and serological tested for specimen's culture on different culture media and antibiotic sensitivity test. Results show from 100 cases 64] represents the etiological agent of diarrhea and

Emergency department presentation and management of patients with acute decompensated heart failure at the Baghdad Teaching Hospital
...Show More Authors

Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a leading cause of hospital admission and many factors are known to precipitate decompensation. We aimed to assess the decompensating factors of heart failure and the management of patients admitted to the emergency department (ED). A total of 107 patients were examined, all diagnosed with ADHF in the ED of the Baghdad Teaching Hospital, from June 2017 to December 2017, and presenting with decom¬pensation (pulmonary oedema, peripheral oedema, and fatigue). The mean patient age was 62.5 ± 9.8 years (range: 43–85 years); the majority of them were in their 7th decade (37.4%), and men were slightly more than women. Hy¬pertension was the most commonly associated comorbidity (68.2%), follow

Investigating the Histological Changes in Heart, Lung, Liver and Kidney of Male Albino Mice Treated with Ivabradine

The present study aimed to investigate the histological changes of heart, lung, liver and kidney which caused by different concentrations (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) of Ivabradine. Results of the study revealed some histological changes represented by aggregation of the lymphocytes around respiratory bronchioles of the lung. In the liver, the drug caused hepatocyte necrosis and infiltration of the lymphocytes. In Kidney, there are no histopathological modifications in the tissue after the animals treated with 10 mg\kg of Ivabradine. When the animals treated with Ivabradine drug at 20mg/kg of bw, dose showed vascular congestion between myocardial fibers of heart. Emphysematous c

Does Parkinson’s disease affect sleep quality?
...Show More Authors

Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease that is linked to several motor and nonmotor symptoms, including sleep disturbances. Patient quality of life has been shown to be disproportionally impacted by disease. Objectives To investigate sleep quality among individuals with PD, and to assess the severity of sleep disturbances and their impact on daytime activities. Subjects and methods A case‒control with 44 patients with Parkinson’s disease and 80 apparently healthy control participants was recruited from several hospitals and clinics. Each participant provided a thorough medical history and underwent a physical examination, and a questionnaire comprising the standard PSQI was used to assess sleep qua
