Infectious Causes of Diarrhea Among Neutropenic Children
...Show More Authors

Background: Intestinal infections are frequently occur among children with cancer who receive chemotherapy. On the other hand, diarrhea is especially common and severe among cancer patients that develop neutropenia, either due to the disease itself or due to the intensive chemotherapy. There are many causes of diarrhea among those patients, but intestinal infections still an important etiology among them.

Objectives: to study the frequency of diarrhea among neutropenic children, with its infectious etiologies, especially the bacterial, fungal and parasitic causes.

Type of the study:Cross-sectional study.

Methods: the study was done in the Oncology Department of Nanakali Hospital for Haematological diseases and malignanciesin Erbil City, on pediatric age group. One hundred six children with cancer were followed up during the period between January – May 2017, of them only 50 patients who full fill the criteria of being (neutropenic, diarrheic, and age < 14 years), and those were regarded as the study group, compared to 20 patients who had the same criteria (diarrheic, and age < 14 years) but notneutropenic. They were investigated for the infectious causes of diarrhea especially bacterial, parasitic, and fungal agents. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS program and Correlation test was also used. The results were regarded significant with p < 0.05.

Results: A total of 70 diarrheal episodes in 106 cancer children were detected, 50 of them were neutropenic while 20 were not. Intestinal infections were detected in 62% of the 1st group and in 45% of the 2nd one, while the causes in the remaining cases of diarrhea (38%) cannot be identified. Bacterial pathogens were the main agents that causes diarrhea followed by fungi then parasites with an infectious rates of (28%, 20%, and 14% respectively).

Conclusions: Diarrhea commonly developed among cancer children with neutropenia. Bacteria are the most incriminated pathogens followed by Candida and parasites. This study noticed the presence of other etiologies for diarrhea beside infectious causes that should be considered and investigated in the future researches and during management of diarrhea in those patients.

PURIFICATION OF INULINASE FROM KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIAE AND STUDY THE ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECT OF COMBINATION OF INULINASE AND CEFTAZIDIME
...Show More Authors

Klebsiella pneumoniae are Gram-negative which cause many diseases such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections and septicemia. Inulinase is an enzyme used in food manufacture and pharmaceuticals. Inulinase is used in decreasing lipid ratio and, cholesterol in blood and considered as a prebiotic factor inside intestine. Many microorganisms can produce inulinase, such as yeast, fungi and bacteria; among such bacteria: Bacillus spp., Arthrobacter spp., and Pseudomonas spp. but there are no studies about inulinase production by K. pneumoniae have been reported. So the current study aims at investing the ability of producing and purification inulinase by K. pneumoniae. Method: K. pneumoniae were isolated from many hospitals and

Cancer Patients’ Experiences and Understanding of Venous Thromboembolism
...Show More Authors

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), presents an extra challenge in the management of patients with cancer, given the increase in morbidity and mortality in having both conditions. Cancer patients are well known to have a high risk of VTE; particularly; those who have had major surgery, chemotherapy and/or hormonal therapy. These groups of patients need to understand the risk factors and the prophylactic measures to prevent developing VTE. This review aims to provide an overview of the literature on cancer patients’ understanding of VTE and their experiences of cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT).

Molecular Detection of Porphyromonas gingivalis in COVID-19 Patients
...Show More Authors

Background:SARS-CoV-2 infection has caused a global pandemic that continues to negatively impact human health. A large group of microbial domains including bacteria co-evolved and interacted in complex molecular pathogenesis along with SARS-CoV-2. Evidence suggests that periodontal disease bacteria are involved in COVID-19, and are associated with chronic inflammatory systemic diseases. This study was performed to investigate the association between bacterial loads of Porphyromonas gingivalis and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Fifty patients with confirmed COVID-19 by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, their age ranges between 20-76 years, and 35 healthy volunteers (matched accordingly with age and sex to th

Sheep are considered as an important part of livestock in the worldwide, particularly in Iraq, as they provide meat, milk, leather, wool, and manure. The present study aim is isolation and identification of staphylococci, enteric bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. Totally, 115 samples were collected from sheep (100 samples were collected from the nasal cavity of local sheep suffering from respiratory infections, and 15 samples were collected from apparently healthy local sheep). All the samples were collected from seven flocks located in Abu Ghraib and Al-Radwaniyah, Baghdad governorate, Iraq. The samples were taken during the period from October 2020 to February 2021. Background: Stromal inflammatory cells in malignant tissue have recently gained increasing interest. Unlike the extensive research on tumor‐infiltrating lymphocytes, published data about tumor‐infiltrating eosinophils in breast cancer are scarce. Furthermore, similar studies have yet to be conducted in Iraq.

Aims: The objective of this study is to examine the presence of eosinophilic infiltration by direct visualization using light microscopy and to analyze its relationship with other histological parameters in a group of Iraqi women diagnosed with invasive mammary cancer.

Methods and material: A retrospective study enrolled 90 h

Background: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction that results in fluctuating muscle weakness as well as significant fatigue. Disease exacerbation is a critical condition, and the predisposing factors for it need to be identified to improve preventive measures.

Objectives:  Our study aims to determine the predisposing factors for myasthenia gravis exacerbations in a group of Iraqi patients.

Subjects and Methods: A total number of 30 myasthenia gravis patients were admitted to the hospital with an exacerbation of their symptoms, determined as the development of functional disability, dysphagia, or respiratory fai
