Migraine In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Rheumatological outpatients unit

Background: Migraine is common in systemic lupus erythematosus. It is a significant source of patient disability.

Objective: To determine the rate of migraine in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, to assess migraine type, severity, and the association between migraine and patient’s characteristics.

Type of the study: Cross-sectional study.

Methods: 100 subjected were recruited and divided into two groups; fifty patients with the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus were recruited from the Rheumatologic department of medicine, and another 50 normal subjects, then complete medical and drugs history were taken from them.

Results: Fifty patients completed the questionnaire. Thirty percent of systemic lupus erythematosus patients and 12% of normal subjects had migraine. Of the patients with migraine 80%, 13.3% and 6.7% met criteria for migraine without aura, migraine with aura and retinal migraine respectively. The moderately severe migraine was commonly observed (53.3%). There were significant associations between migraine and systemic lupus erythematosus patients who have Raynaud’s phenomenon, and cardiolipin antibodies. There were no statistically significant associations between migraine, systemic lupus erythematosus duration and patient’s age, sex, and anti-dsDNA.

Conclusions:A high rate of migraine in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.Migraine associated with Raynaud’s phenomenon, and cardiolipin antibodies.

Evaluation of Interleukin-9 Serum Level and Gene Polymorphism in A Sample of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Iraqi Female's Patients.

Background Immunological gene and serum level for interleukin- 9 rs 17317275 have been established to have linked to predisposition systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and its severity. SLE is a severe, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibody generation, complement activation, and immune complex deposition. In the pathophysiology of SLE, cytokines have a pleiotropic function. Recently, IL-9 was discovered to mediate strong anti-inflammatory effects in numerous cells or experimental autoimmune models. Objective This study aimed to determine the role of age, IL-9 serum level and genetic polymorphism, C-reactive protein (CRP), Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) and Anti- double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) to recognize SLE pathogenesis.

The etiological role of Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections in systemic lupus erythematosus of iraqi female patients

Recently, Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was considered as one of the autoimmune diseases that the genetic and environmental factors contributed in the disease etiological profile. According to the environmental factors, infectious agents have been concluded to have a role in the etiology and pathogenesis of SLE. Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae are among these infectious agents that have been suggested to be involved in the etiology of SLE. Accordingly, the current study was designed to assess the anti-C. pneumoniae and anti-M. pneumoniae IgG antibody status by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the sera of 64 Iraqi SLE females' patients and 32 Iraqi healthy females as controls. The patients' group were distribu

No etiological role of Herpes Simplex Virus and Toxoplasma Gondii infections in systemic lupus erythematosus of Iraqi Female Patients

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the autoimmune disorders, generated by a production of specific autoantibodies against self-antigens before the occurrence of clinical symptoms. The etiology of disease is still unknown, although there have been several infectious agents that have been associated with SLE development, especially in genetically predisposed individuals. Herpes simplex virus-I and -II (HSV-I and -II) and Toxoplasma gondiiare two infectious agents that have been suggested to be involved in SLE etiology. Accordingly, the present study assessed anti- HSV-I and -II and anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in sera of 64 SLE female patients and 32 healthy control women. The patients w

Correlation Between Gene Expression of Interferon Regulatory Factor-5 and Disease Activity Index in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Iraqi Patients

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by elevated levels of circulating anti-nuclear autoantibodies and interferon-alpha (INFs-α). Interferon regulatory factor-5 (IRF5) plays an important role in the induction of type I interferon and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and participates in the SLE pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the role of IRF5 gene expression levels in a sample of SLE Iraqi patients and its correlation with disease activity, and to identify its diagnostic ability as a biomarker reflecting disease activity. Blood samples were taken from 45 participants diagnosed with SLE cases classified according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. T

Nitric Oxide, Peroxynitrite and Malondialdehyde Levels as Markers for Nitrosative/Oxidative Stress in Iraqi Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune disease of unknown aetiology affecting multiple organ system. Reactive nitrogen and oxygen species are claimed to play a role in this disease. However, the potential of Nitrosative/Oxidative Stress to elicit an autoimmune, response remain till now largely unexplored in humans. This study was done to investigate the status and contribution of nitrosative/oxidative stress in Iraqi patients for systemic lupus erythematosus. Blood samples from 19 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and 19 age-and sex- matched apparently healthy controls were evaluated for serum levels of nitrosative/oxidative stress markers including nitric oxide, peroxynitrite and malondialdehyde. Nitric oxide levels were

A comparison of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 as atherosclerosis risk factors in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus from Iraq

All major organs may be impacted by the connective disease systemic lupus erythematosus, a separate risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Adhesion molecules like intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAM) and vascular cell adhesion molecules (VCAM) can detect endothelial damage and dysfunction, which appear to play a crucial role. This study investigated whether people with SLE had elevated subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis risk factors. Traditional CAD risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia cannot entirely explain this elevation. It is thought that immunological dysfunction also increases CAD risk in SLE patients. The study aimed to assess early endothelial changes in SLE Iraqi female patients w

Hyperprolactenemia in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematusus

Recent accumulated evidences suggest that prolactin is an important immunomodulator and may have a role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of hyperprolactinemia in women with SLE and to evaluate its correlation with disease flares. Serum prolactin levels were measured in 62 women with SLE and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. In patients and control groups prolactin levels were determined by immunoradiometric assay (IRMA). The prolactin level was found to be higher than normal rang in (40.3%) of SLE patients in active stage versus only (8.06%) of the same SLE patients but in the inactive stage and in (4%) of control group, the elevation was ranging between mi
