Disturbances of Amino Acid Metabolism in Neurologic Disorders detected by fluorescent high performance liquid chromotograghy (HPLC) in Baghdad - IRAQ
...Show More Authors

Background:Amino acid disorders are a major group of inborn error metabolism (IEM) with variable clinical presentation; its diagnosis constitutes a real challenge in a community with high consanguinity rate and no systematic newborn screening.

Objectives: to provide data about amino acid disorders detected in high-risk Iraqi children by using quantitative amino acid fluorescent high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis.

Type of the study: Cross-sectional study.

Methods: a descriptive cross sectional study from 1st February to 1st December 2014, at Neurological ward and clinic of the Children Welfare teaching Hospital, in Baghdad - Iraq. Plasma specimens of 500 patients, with clinical suspicion of inborn error of metabolism (IEM) because of unexplained neurological deficits, unexplained developmental delay, recurrent coma and/or Neuro-degeneration,  hair changes and/or lethargy, poor feeding, vomiting and selected cases of autistic spectrum syndrome or with positive screening, were analyzed for amino acids by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The amino acid disorders were confirmed in fifty patients were; clinical data of patients were reported and analyzed statistically.

Results: out of 500 patients visiting the neurological outpatient and ward, clinical and neurological finding were recorded as well as the family history and/or other symptoms suggestive of aminoacidopathy, Sixty patients were confirmed their diagnosis as amino acid disorders, ten patients were excluded because they lost the follow up or  there is no solid base for a causal relationship between detected abnormal amino acids and neurological disorders, therefore only 50 patients were

enrolled in the study. Patients with Phenylketonuria were the most frequent 24 (48%), homocystinuria 14 (28%), maple syrup urine disease 9 (18%) & other amino acid disorder, (Citrullinemia, non-ketotic hyperglycinemia & Tyrosinemia) 1for each disorder (2%). Considerable delay in diagnosis was noticed which lead to variable neurological abnormalities  in most patients and the psychomotor delay was the main clinical presentation at time of diagnosis 34 (68%).

Conclusion: in the absence of newborn screening, the majority of Aminoacidopathies cases was still diagnosed clinically, but delayed. The importance of clinical awareness and accurate biochemical analysis were the key tools for diagnosis and the necessity for a comprehensive national newborn screening program.

Isolation, characterization and quantification of a pentacyclic triterpinoid compound ursolic acid in Scabiosa palaestina L. distributed in the north of Iraq
...Show More Authors

Ursolic acid (UA, 3 ?-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid) are isomeric triterpenic acids. The high quantities of pentacyclic triterpenoids in Scabiosa species seems to be obvious and there is an evidence that most of pentacyclic triterpenoids that have been isolated are saponins. This is one of the most important characteristic of the genus Scabiosa, the main aglycones are ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. In the current study, isolation from the aerial part and roots of Scabiosa palaestina L. was performed using Preparative HPLC. Furthermore, detection and quantitation of ursolic acid was performed by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC). The identification of isolated triterpenoid involves two methods including FT-IR coupl

Performance Enhancement of the South Baghdad Thermal Station
...Show More Authors

Aim of the research is the study of improving the performance of the thermal station south Baghdad and the main reasons for reduced its efficiency. South Baghdad power planet comprises (6) steam turbine units and (18) gas turbine units .The gas turbine units are composed of two groups: the first group is made up of gas units (1,2), each of capacity (123) MW. The design efficiency of gas turbine units is 32%. The actual efficiency data of steam units is 18.3% instead of 45% which is the design efficiency. The main reason for efficiency reduction of gas units is the rejected thermal energy with the exhaust gases to atmosphere, that are (450-510) ℃.The bad type of fuel used (heavy) fuel. Another reason for the low efficiency and has a neg

Impact of Tigris River Pollution on the Performance of Water Treatment Plants Efficiencies in Baghdad City
...Show More Authors

The determination of river pollution impact on the performance of water treatment plants is achieved by two main objectives. The first is to study raw and treated water qualities and comparing them with standards and the second is to evaluate the treatment plants efficiency. The analyzed data were those water quality parameters in relation to physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics for river water and produced water by seven water treatment plants located on Tigris River passing through Baghdad City.
The results of this study indicated that all raw water characteristic are within the surface water standards established by Iraqi and USA criteria except Bacterial Counts.
Tigris River water is of good quality to be trea

Background: Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a general term that describe a wide variety of conditions that include myogenic pain, internalderangement, arthritic problem, ankylosis of the joint and growth disorders. The aims of study was to evaluate the value of 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging in assessment of articular disc position and configuration in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders and to evaluate the correlations of these MRI findings with the clinical signs and symptoms. Materials and methods: A total forty six (30 study and 16 control) participants aged between18 and 49 years, were examined according to Helkimo anamnestic index (questionnaire for anamnesis) and clinical dysfunction index scoring criteria
