A total of 320 samples of vaginal swabs was obtained from women complaining of vaginal infection and attending two hospitals in Al-Sader city, Baghdad, namely Ibn AlBaladi Hospital for Pediatrics and Gynecology and Fatimat Al-Zahraa Hospital for Obstetrics in Al-Habibia district during the period from Desember 1997 till July 1998. Results of direct smear and culture showed that Trichomonas vaginalis infection occurred in 19.1%, in addition to some microorganisms. The most common infection was by Candida spp. (24.7%), followed by Gardnerella vaginalis (13.8%) and Staph. aureus (10.9%). Infection with Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Proteus spp. were 6.6%, 3.8% and 2.5%, respectively. The infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae was very low (1.3%). The most associated microorganisms with T. vaginalis were G. vaginalis (26.2%). Infection with N. gonorrhoeae was less associated with T. vaginalis (1.6%). Fungal infection was 14.8% with those positive for T. vaginalis and it was less than those with negative trichomoniasis (27%). No considerable differences were noticed in the percentages of other microorganisms associated or non associated with T. vaginalis.

Infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is widely prevalent in humans and animals. Infection with Toxoplasma may associate with miscarriage in many pregnant women due to infection. In this study, the level of lutetropic hormone (LTH), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured in pregnant women suffering from toxoplasmosis using mini-VIDAS®technique. Results showed that pregnant women have high concentration of both LTH and FSH hormone(10.80 ± 6.53) ng/ml and (9.51 ± 2.40) μIU/ml respectively, while the concentration of LH hormone was lower than normal(4.49 ± 0.56) μIU/ml. Such finding is to suggest that infection with T. gondii is interfering with these hormones in pregnant women.
To investigate the role of IL-6 and IL-8 in the immune-regulatory mechanisms involved in the recurrent spontaneous abortion of the first trimester of pregnancy. A total of 28 birds were examined to investigate about the distribution of the nematode Hadjelia truncata among some members of the avian family Columbidae in Al-Diwaniya Province, Central Iraq. The percentages of the infection rate with this nematode were 27.27, 37.5, 14.28 and 0 in Columba livia, C. palumbis, Streptopelia decaocto, and S. turtur respectively.
