Relationships of Osmolality and Oxidative Stress with Semen Quality and Their Effects on Male Fertility

The objective of this study was to investigate and find the relationships between human semen osmolality and oxidative stress with semen quality. Semen analysis was determined to evaluate semen quality and fertility. The concentration of semen malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured to assess oxidative stress. For this purpose, one hundred seventy healthy adult males were used in this study. The study was conducted from September 2018 to November 2019 in the Infertility care and in vitro fertilization center (IVF) and the Biology department of the College of Science at Salahaddin University in Erbil city. A significant positive correlation was observed between the total sperm motility, grade activity, and sperm motility index with semen osmolality less than 300 mOsm kg-1 (r= 0.62, r = 0.64, and r= 0.75 p≤0.01 respectively) and osmolality 300-350 (r= 0.53, p≤0.05  r= 0.52 p≤0.05, and r= 0.56 p≤0.01 respectively). Total sperm motility, grade activity, and sperm motility index are negatively correlated with osmolality 351-400 mOsm kg-1 (r= -0.65 p≤0.05, r= -0.56 p≤0.05, and  r= -0.67 p≤0.01) and more than 400 mOsm kg-1 (r= -0.86, r = -0.74 and r= -0.88 p≤0.01). Regarding the relation between oxidative stress and sperm motility kinetics, total sperm motility, grade activity, and sperm motility index is negatively correlated with MDA more than 2 µmol/L (r= -0.56 p≤0.05, r= -0.52 p≤0.05, and r= -0.67 p≤0.01 respectively). No significant correlation was found between semen osmolality and MDA concentration with sperm concentration, total sperm count, sperm viability, and normal sperm morphology.

Determination of Some Oxidative Stress Parameters and Antioxidants in Sample of Iraqi Beta Thalassemia Major Patients

Repeated blood transfusion in beta thalassemia major patients may lead to peroxidative tissue injury by secondary iron overload. In the present study, 100 patients(50 male+50 female) with beta thalassemia major patients with age (5-20) years and 60 healthy control were included during their attendance at Abin Al_Baladi hospital in Baghdad. Malondialdehyde ,Superoxide Dismutase and Vitamin E, were measured by using kits. The results showed A highly significant (p<0.01)increase in the levels of Malondialdehyde and Superoxide Dismutase, whereas, significant p(<0.01)decrease in the levels of vitamin-E, This suggest that oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant defense mechanism play an important role in pathogenesis of beta thalassemia

The Role of Oxidative Stress In Lead Poisoning

To investigate the relationship between increased lipid peroxidation, and the lowering of both plasma total proteins and albumin in lead-exposed workers, and the effectiveness of antioxidants (vit. C and E) in modulating oxidative stress in those workers.

Thirty male and females workers employed in the Iraqi storage battery (age range 20-40 years) were participating in this study. Additionally, 11 healthy subjects were served as healthy controls, with the same age range compared to workers group, to avoid the effects of age variations on the studied parameters. Blood lead levels, erythrocytes and plasma MDA, erythrocytes and plasma GSH, total protein and albumin levels in healthy controls and lead-exposed workers pre- and post-tr

Protective Effect of Vitamin A against Oxidative Stress Caused by Methotrexate

Methotrexate (MTX), a folate antagonist agent, is mainly used in treatment of
malignant tumors and autoimmune diseases. The present study was undertaken to
determine whether antioxidant vitamin (vitamin A) could ameliorate methotrexateinduced
oxidative stress in male rabbits. Twenty male rabbits were randomly
assigned into four groups. Group 1: control group, Group 2: MTX-treated group
(received 20 mg/kg MTX intraperitoneally), Group 3: Vit.A treated group received
5000 IU Vit.A orally) and Group 4: MTX+Vit.A treated group received MTX 20
mg/kg plus 5000 IU vit.A). After 4 weeks of treatment, blood samples were
collected by cardiac puncture to determine the serum malondialdehyde (MDA), as a
good indicator for l

Oxidative Stress in Multiple Sclerosis Disease (Review Article)

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, in which the myelin sheaths got injured. The prevalence of MS is on grow, as well as, it affects the young ages. Females are most common to have MS compared to males. Oxidative stress is the situation of imbalance between oxidants (free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS)) and antioxidants in a living system, in which either the oxidants are elevated or antioxidants are reduced, or sometimes both. ROS and oxidative stress have been implicated in the progression of many degenerative diseases, which is important in cracking the unrevealed mysteries of MS. In this review article, some of the proposed mechanisms that link oxidative stres

Measurement of Pollution Level with Particulate Matter in Babylon Concrete Plant and Evaluation of Oxidative Stress and Hematological Profile of Plant Workers

The impact of exposure to different sizes of particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM7, and PM10) was evaluated in  Babylon concrete plant workers who had been exposed to concrete dust for at least 10 years.  The effects of  these particles on the hematological parameters, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and  antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase ) were examined. The results exhibited that the levels of PM2.5 and PM10 were higher than the acceptable limits approved by the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The blood parameters, namely white blood cells (WBC), red blood cell (RBC) and platelets counts, demonstrated non-significant differences between workers exposed to the PM as compared to the control gro
