This research aimed to identify the level of English language knowledge among the students of scientific colleges and the preparatory year (scholarship students) at the Islamic University of Madinah. The research was limited to identifying students at the meanings of vocabulary and grammar of the English language. The researcher used a descriptive approach to achieve study goals. Words in a language do not exist in isolation but in close connection with each other ,teaming up in one way or another known to the Russian semasiology M. M. Pokrovsky , one of the first to realize the systematic nature of the lexicon, wrote about the second half of the nineteenth century : „the Words and their meanings do not live separate from each other life, but are joined together in our minds), regardless of our consciousness to different groups , and the basis for grouping is the similarity or direct contrast in the main value.

An idiom is a group of words whose meaning put together is different from the meaning of
individual words. English is a rich language when it comes to idioms, they represent variety. For
foreign learners, idioms are problematic because even if they know the meaning of individual
words that compose an idiom the meaning of it might be something completely different.
The present study investigates Iraqi third year college students’ recognition of idioms. To
achieve this, the researchers have conducted a test which comprises three questions. Certain
conclusions are reached here along with some suggestions and recommendations.
