Discourse Markers in Political Speeches: Forms and Functions
...Show More Authors

Discourse markers are expressions used to connect sentences to what comes before or after and indicate a speaker's attitude to what he is saying. As linguistic items, they have important functions in discourses of various styles or registers. And being connective elements, discourse markers relate sentences, clauses and paragraphs to each other. "One of the most prominent function of discourse markers, however, is to signal the kinds of relations a speaker perceives between different parts of the discourse". (Lenk 1997: 2) Through political discourse, different types of discourse markers are used. This paper deals with the importance and functions of discourse markers and tries to shed light on the kinds of discourse markers used in political speech through analyzing the speech of the American president, Barack Obama, depending on Hyland and Tse’s (2004) classification of discourse markers; interpersonal and textual markers. The results show that these discourse markers function as means ofsocial interaction aimed at influencing the nation.

Radionuclides Activity and Radiological Hazard Assessment in Bananas Samples Exported to Iraq
...Show More Authors

The average concentration of radionuclide’s in the various banana samples were collected from being the most popular markets in Baghdad city - Iraq were measured by use Sodium Iodide Thallium [NaI(Tl)] detector. The radionuclide’s observed with reliable regularity belonged to the series-decay naturally occurring radionuclide’s headed by 232U and 232Th as well as the non-series nuclide, 40K and 137Cs. The average concentration of 40K was found the least average concentration value recorded as876.74625Bq kg-1.The average concentration of 238U was 28.6425Bqkg-1for ²³²Th, it was found to have the average concentration 14.1805 Bqkg-1. The cesium concentration in the sample was found in the healthy range.

A Feminist Stylistic Analysis of Anti-feminist Poetry in English and Arabic
...Show More Authors

Language plays a major role in all aspects of life. Communication is regarded as the most important of these aspects, as language is used on a daily basis by humanity either in written or spoken forms. Language is also regarded as the main factor of exchanging peoples’ cultures and traditions and in handing down these attributes from generation to generation. Thus, language is a fundamental element in identifying peoples’ ideologies and traditions in the past and the present. Despite these facts, the feminist linguists have objections to some of the language structures, demonstrating that language is gender biased to men. That is, language promotes patriarchal values. This pushed towards developing extensive studies to substantiate s

Superoxide Dismutase and Clopidogrel: A Potential Role in Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatment
...Show More Authors

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of peripheral artery disease (PAD). This study aimed to investigate the effect of clopidogrel on oxidative stress in PAD patients. Seventy subjects were divided into three groups: PAD patients before treatment (B-PAD), PAD patients after treatment with clopidogrel (A-PAD), and healthy controls. Serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and oxidized protein were measured. SOD activities were also determined. The results showed that SOD activities, and SOD specific activities were significantly decreased in PAD patients compared to healthy individuals. After treatment with clopidogrel, SOD activities, and SOD specific activities were continuous

Abstract

The aim of the research is to clarify the requirements of the qualification of the external auditor in Iraq and the extent of their impact on the quality of the professional performance of the audit process. The research was based on analyzing the results of the questionnaire prepared for the impact of qualifications on the quality of professional performance. The researcher has reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which is that a highly qualified and unethical auditor has a greater negative impact on the quality of professional performance than those with low qualifications. The most important recommendations of the research were the need to pay

The Behavior of Bond Strength between Rebar and Concrete in Rubberized Concrete : -
...Show More Authors

Through an experimental program of eighteen specimens presented in this paper, the bond strength between reinforcing bar and rubberized concrete was produced by adding waste tire rubber instead of natural aggregate. The fine and coarse aggregate was replaced in 0%, 25%, and 50% with the small pieces of a waste tire. Natural aggregate replacement ratio, rebar size, embedded rebar length, the rebar yield stress of rebar, cover, and concrete compressive strength were studied in this investigation. Ultimate bond stress, bond stress-slip response, and failure modes were presented. The experimental results reported that a reduction of 19% in bond strength was noticed in 50% replaced rubberized concrete compared with convention

Micronuclei Formation and Comet Assay in Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
...Show More Authors

Recently the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been linked with DNA damage and genomic instability. Amis of this study to evaluated some parameters of genetic instability such as micronuclei and comet assay score in women with PCOS. Genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of DNA damage were evaluated by measured of micronuclei and comet assay in 25 patients with PCOS and 15 normal menstrual women as control group. The results showed higher significant differences in the level of micronuclei and comet score in patients with PCOS compared with normal women. We concluded that, the genetic instability more occurred in patients with PCOS when compared with control group.

Detection and isolation of flavonoids from Calendula officinalis (F.Asteraceae) cultivated in Iraq
...Show More Authors

Calendula officinalis L. (Asteraceae) known as marigold is known to have several pharmacological activities and used for the treatment of several diseases as measles, jaundice, constipation and several inflammations. Marigold flowers contain several chemical constituents mainly flavonoids, triterpenoids and essential oil. In this study marigold flowers cultivated in Iraq had been investigated for its flavonoids content. The study revealed the presence of quercetin and kaempferol glycosides and the absence of myricetin glycosides. The flowers were extracted with ethanol 70% fractionated with different solvent and the flavonoids were isolated by preparative HPLC. The isolated flavonoids were identified by measuring melting points, UV, IR,

Spectrophotometric Determination of Cefotaxime via Diazotization Reaction in Pure and Pharmaceutical Samples
...Show More Authors

An accurate and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of cefotaxime (CEF) in pure and pharmaceutical samples. The suggested method depended on the coupling reaction between diazotized cefotaxime and 3,5-dimethyl phenol (3,5-DMPH) in basic medium to form light orange, water soluble dye, that is stable and has a maximum absorbance at 497nm. The calibration graph was liner over the concentration range (1-70) µg.mL-1 with LOD of 0.750 µg.mL-1 and LOQ of. 2.740 µg. mL-1, sandal sensitivity of 0.0526 µg. cm-2 . molar absorptivity 11328 Lmol-1 cm-1 . The stoichiometry composition was found by Jobs a
