Antibacterial effects of mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine TM after the addition of different concentrations of black seed aqueous solutions
...Show More Authors

Background: Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and BiodentineTM cements are new materials with numerous exciting clinical applications. Both have appreciable properties which include good physical properties and the ability to stimulate tissue regeneration as well as good antibacterial effects. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the antibacterial effects of MTA and BiodentineTM, when they were mixed with different concentrations of aqueous solutions of Black Seed extract, against Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and methods: MTA and BiodentineTMwere prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The method of Mawlood was followed to prepare the Black Seed aqueous solution. Agar diffusion method on Brain Heart Infusion agar was employed.Twenty, 9 cm diameter, petri-plates with 25 ml of Muller Hinton agar media were prepared. A sterile spreader was used to inoculate the microorganisms. With a micropipette 0.1 ml of the Enterococcus faecalis suspension was added to the surface of the plates. Within 15 minutes, after inoculation of the plates, 4 cavities, each one measuring 5 mm in diameter and 4 mm in depth, were made in each agar plate. A total of 20 agar plates were divided into 2 groups consisted of 10 plates each; Group A: each plate contained 4 wells filled with MTA alone and MTA mixed with 10%, 30% and 50% of Black Seed aqueous solutions respectively.Group B: each plate contained 4 wells filled with BiodentineTMalone and BiodentineTMmixed with 10%, 30% and 50% of Black Seed aqueous solutionsrespectively. Next day after incubation, the agar plates were examined for bacterial inhibition zones. With a scientific ruler the diameter of the antibacterial inhibition zones were measured. The data were recorded and statistically analyzed, by the ANOVA and the Student's t-test. Results: Both cements had antibacterial effects, which were increased with the addition of the aqueous solutions of Black Seed extract. The increase in the diameter of Enterococcus faecalis inhibition zones was directly proportional with the increase in the concentration of the added Black Seed aqueous extract. Conclusion: Adding aqueous solutions of Black Seed extract to both MTA and Biodentine™ increased their potential to inhibit the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. Key words: Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Biodentine TM, Black Seed.

Co-digestion of Shumblan with Different Wastes as a Source for the Biogas Production
...Show More Authors

Shumblan (SH) is one of the most undesirable aquatic plants widespread in the irrigation channels and water bodies. This work focuses on boosting the biogas potential of shumblan by co-digesting it with other types of wastes without employing any chemical or thermal pretreatments as done in previous studies. A maximum biogas recovery of 378 ml/g VS was reached using shumblan with cow manure as inoculum in a ratio of 1:1. The methane content of the biogas was 55%. Based on volatile solid (VS) and C/N ratios, biogas productions of 518, 434, and 580 ml/g VS were obtained when the shumblan was co-digested with food wastes (SH:F), paper wastes (SH:P), and green wastes (SH:G) respectively. No significant changes of methane contents were observ

Study of the Thermal Durability of Refractory Mortar Prepared from Local Clay Mixed with Different Percentage of Silica
...Show More Authors

Refractory mortar was prepared from the mixing of locally fire clay with different percentage of silica powder (30,40,50,60)wt% by using Pyrometric Cone Equivalent PCE . According to the U.S. Standard ASTM C24, the samples were prepared by using Hand – molding method and dried at temperature 110⁰C and finally firing at different temperature (1000,1100,1200,1300)⁰C according to burning program to study the effect of temperatures for these specimens on the thermal durability .It was shown that the increasing in the percentage of silica content increased the durability of heat specimens, and the best degree of burn was 1300°C.

Gene expression of a nitrogen tolerance gene ZmNR1 under the influence of different levels of nitrogen in maize
...Show More Authors

A field experiment was carried out in the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences - University of Baghdad, during the fall season of 2021 to find out which cultivated cultivars of maize are efficient under nitrogen fertilization. The experiment was applied according to an RCBD (split-plot design with three replications). The cultivars of the experiment (Baghdad, 5018, Sarah) supply three levels of nitrogen fertilizer, which are N1 (100 kg.N/ha), N2 (200 kg.N/ha) and N3 (300 kg.N/ha). The statistical analysis results showed the superiority of the Sarah genotype, which gave the highest value of SOD and CAT enzymes, reaching 11.59 units mg-1 and 10.76 units mg-1 . Protein sequentially, while cultivar5018 outperformed as it gave th
