CD34 and Wnt3 expression in potentially malignant oral disorders
...Show More Authors

Background: Potentially malignant oral disorders (PMODs) are common precursors of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Neoangiogenesis and signalling are important intermediate biomarkers that may govern the progression of dysplastic mucosa into carcinoma. Aims: Evaluate the importance of CD34 and Wnt3 expression in PMODs and OSCCs in relation to their clinicopathological parameters. Settings and Design: Prospective cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemical staining for CD34 and Wnt3 was performed for 41 samples. These included 27 PMODs, six OSCCs and eight normal gingival and alveolar mucosa. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests were applied. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: CD34 expression showed a significant difference between groups (P<0.05). CD34 expression decreased in patients who had PMODs, and it was seen to correlate with clinical staging in OSCC patients. The alveolar epithelia had lower microvessel density (MVD) (9.3±.88) than the gingiva (17.47±5.09) (P<0.05), whereas the lichen planus without dysplasia had lower MVD (8.85±3.95) than both the gingiva and the dysplastic epithelia (14.46±3.89) (P<0.05). On the other hand, Wnt3 expression was not detected in the alveolar mucosa, but scattered perinuclear and nuclear expression in the gingival mucosa was observed. Cytoplasmic Wnt3 expression was seen in all oral lichen planus (OLP) and some leukoplakia cases with no nuclear staining, whereas its expression in proliferative verrucous leukoplakia was only nuclear. Furthermore, OSCCs showed both cytoplasmic and nuclear expression. Conclusion: MVD may represent a useful biomarker preceding oral cancer development. It increases from normal mucosa to dysplasia to carcinoma. Aberrant cytoplasmic expression of Wnt3 is detected in PMODs and OSCCs. Thus, Wnt3 may be involved in disease progression.

Isolation and Characterization of Triterpenoid Saponin Hederacoside C. Present in the Leaves of Hedera helix L. Cultivated in Iraq
...Show More Authors

Hedera helix L. plant belongs to the family Araliaceae that provide a host of bioactive compounds (mainly saponins) of important biological activities, like spasmolytic, secretolytic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities. Literature survey revealed that there was no previously study concerning H. helix L. which is cultivated in Iraq, so we decided to carry out this study which include extraction, isolation, purification and identification of biologically important triterpenoid saponin hederacoside C from leaves of H. helix L. Extraction of hederacoside C was carried out using two methods; in the first method maceration  was done with methanol 99.8% and in the second method soxhlet extraction wit

Background: Non-nutritive sucking habits are common in infants and toddlers. One of the most common non-nutritive sucking habits is pacifier; its prevalence varies from one population to another. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of pacifier sucking habit among children aged 1-5 years old in Baghdad city and to assess its effect on the occlusion of primary dentition concerning posterior crossbite. Materials and methods: The study was carried out among 1222 children aged 1-5 years old, from which 50 children with continues pacifier sucking habit were chosen to be the study group, compared to 50 children without any sucking habit (control group) matching the study group in age and gender. Children were examined clinically t

BACKGROUND: Febrile neutropenia occurs in more than 80% of patients with hematological malignances specially after chemotherapy cycles and an infectious source is identified in approximately 20–30%. Various bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogen contribute to the development of neutropenic fever and without prompt antibiotic therapy mortality rate can be as high as 70%. AIM: The objective of the study was to document the current sites of infection in patients with febrile neutropenia in hematological ward in Baghdad Teaching Hospital, the microorganisms and antibiotic susceptibly in culture positive cases and mortality rate in 1 week and 4 weeks after episode of fever. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease its etiology is unknown. The classical autoimmune diseases, have adaptive immune genetic associations with autoantibodies and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), diabetes mellitus type two (DM II). Serum of99 males suffering from RA without DMII as group (G1), 45 males suffering from RA with DM II as group (G2) and 40 healthy males as group (G3) were enrolled in this study to estimation of alkaline phosphates (ALP), C-reactive protein (CRP) and Pentraxin-3(PTX). Results showed a highly significant increase in PTX3 levels in G1 and G2 compared to G3 and a significant decrease in G1comparing to G2. Results also revealed a significa
