Dental caries and treatment needs in relation to nutritional status among children with congenital heart disease
...Show More Authors

Background: Congenital heart disease is one of the most common developmental anomalies in children. These patients commonly have poor oral health that increase caries risk. Dental management of children with congenital heart disease requires special attention, because of their heightened susceptibility to infectious endocarditis. The aims of this study were to assess the severity of dental caries of primary and permanent teeth and treatment needs in relation to nutritional indicator (Body Mass Index) among children with congenital heart disease. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, case group consisted of 399 patients aged between 6-12 years old with congenital heart disease were examined for dental status in Ibn Al-Bitar specialized center for cardiac surgery in Baghdad/Iraq. A case-matched group (healthy control) of 485 children was also examined from primary schools in Baghdad city. Diagnosis and recording of dental caries and treatment needs were recorded according to the criteria of WHO (1997). The assessment of nutritional status (BMI) was performed following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention growth chart (2000). All data were analyzed using IBMSPSS version 23. Results: Results recorded the highest mean rank value of (DMFS)and (dmfs) were among CHD cases than control group with statistically high significant difference. Results revealed the mean rank values of (ds, ms, fs and dmfs) were higher at age group 6-7 years among CHD cases, while the mean rank values of (DS, MS, FS and DMFS) were higher at age group 12 years with statistically high significant difference among age group. The mean rank values of all types of treatment needs were recorded to be higher among CHD cases than control group, except for children no treatment needs, these differences were statistically highly significant. Also this study found that the mean rank values of caries experience (ds, ms, fs and dmfs) were higher among wasted than well nourished CHD cases with statistically highly significant for dmfs. Moreover, the mean rank values of all types of treatment need required were higher among wasted CHD cases than well nourished; however, the differences were statistical highly significant. Conclusion: The study revealed that these children are “at risk” from dental disease and malnourished, the primary focus should be on oral hygiene instructions, the awareness of infective endocarditis and they required a development of preventive programs.

Urine Protein SDS-PAGE Reveals Different Profiles in Iraqi Children with Kala-azar
...Show More Authors

Urine proteomics have been an area of interest and recently in Kala-azar as an alternative sample type for serum or plasma. Because of simplicity, noninvasiveness of collection and simpler matrix.  Many studies had detected an increased protein excretion in the urine of patients with active Kala-azar due to renal involvement particularly by an immunological related mechanism(s). This study have demonstrated the presence of three different protein profiles in Iraqi children (Patients: including 60 children aged 4-60 months) with defined Kala-azar using the conventional SDS-PAGE on urine samples. Urine protein profile in Kala-azar patients revealed three groups of banding patterns: group-1(33.4)% of the patients show the pattern of 5

Mobile-based Human Emotion Recognition based on Speech and Heart rate
...Show More Authors

Mobile-based human emotion recognition is very challenging subject, most of the approaches suggested and built in this field utilized various contexts that can be derived from the external sensors and the smartphone, but these approaches suffer from different obstacles and challenges. The proposed system integrated human speech signal and heart rate, in one system, to leverage the accuracy of the human emotion recognition. The proposed system is designed to recognize four human emotions; angry, happy, sad and normal. In this system, the smartphone is used to   record user speech and send it to a server. The smartwatch, fixed on user wrist, is used to measure user heart rate while the user is speaking and send it, via Bluetooth,

Background: Pharmacists are essential in treating MS. Pharmacists' involvement and patient consultation may improve patient adherence and satisfaction. Aim: To evaluate the influence of pharmacist-led interventions (PLI) on medication adherence and satisfaction in patients with multiple sclerosis receiving disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). Methods: This study was conducted on patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who were receiving DMTs and attended a neurological consultant clinic in the medical city of Baghdad. It was a pre-post-intervention study. Each patient underwent two educational sessions: the first session took place at the beginning of the study, after completing the Arabic version of the treatment satisfaction q

To determine the important pathogenic role of celiac disease in triggering several autoimmune disease, thirty patients with Multiple Sclerosis of ages (22-55) years have been investigated and compared with 25 healthy individuals. All the studied groups were carried out to measure anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies IgA IgG by ELISA test, anti-reticulin antibodies IgA and IgG, and anti-endomysial antibodies IgA and IgG by IFAT. There was a significant elevation in the concentration of anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies IgA and IgG compared to control groups (P≤0.05), there was 4(13.33%) positive results for anti-reticulin antibodies IgA and IgG , 3(10%) positive results for anti-endomysial antibodies IgA and IgG . There were 4 pos

Interleukin -33 is a new member of the IL-1 superfamily of cytokines that is expressed mainly by stromal cells. Its expression is upregulated following pro-inflammatory stimulation.Aim of the present study was to assess the serum IL-33 level and its relationship with inflammatory biomarker CRP in Iraqi females patients with celiac disease. Thirty five patients with celiac disease (CD) and thirty healthy individuals as control group were enrolled in this study, their age ranged (20-35) year.Anti-Gliadin IgA ,IgG and Anti-Tissue IgA ,IgG were estimated in all subjects as diagnostic parameters .ESR and CRP were assayed as inflammatory biomarkers. IL-33 was determined in patients and control groups. The results of the present study revealed a hig
