The Clinical Approach and Treatment of Benign and Malignant Parotid Masses
...Show More Authors

Background: Parotid gland tumors account for 80% of all salivary gland neoplasms, 20% of these are malignant, but in daily clinical practice most parotid masses are operated on before obtaining the final histological diagnosis. This clinical setting further complicates the critical point of parotid surgery, which is the management of the facial nerve. Materials and methods: 45 patients underwent parotidectomy for benign and malignant neoplasms. A complete history is collected from the patients with the duration and the site of the tumor, the facial nerve examined and its associations, a medical consultation done for opinion and management. Clinical examination with facial nerve was mandatory to avoid any mistakes that may occur. The most significant single parameter in this series of malignancies regarding disease specific survival was the clinical involvement of the facial nerve. Also for this reason, as there is no evidence that the facial nerve sacrifice improves prognosis, when it is not clinically involved, every attempt is made to dissect and preserve it. A treatment plan was contemplated regarding nerve preservation for malignancy or with nerve sacrifice. Result: This study showed that females (62%) are more affected than males (38%),tumors occur at left parotid gland (65%) more than right parotid gland (35%), a malignancy affected the left parotid gland more than the right one and a malignancy affected females more than males. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most frequent benign tumors while the adenocarcinoma most frequent malignant tumors. Conclusion: The most complicated situation concerning nerve preservation may be the recurrence of a benign tumor, in particular pleomorphic adenoma, which, in our series, has a higher incidence (62.5%) of permanent facial dysfunction, than surgery with nerve preservation for malignancy (37.5%) and to resects the nerve when is clinically involved and when is totally embedded in a clearly malignant neoplasm with attempt to preserve it in all other.

This concept derives from philosophical entrances based on the concepts of (being, process, becoming, and integration). Four levels have been for the crossing are (normal, ascending, leap, and descending). Each of these levels includes specific characteristics that distinguish it. Aim: To learn more about Oral Lichen Planus Iraqi patients, including their background information, symptoms, and prognosis. Materials and Methods: From the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, College of Dentistry, Baghdad University, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 68 patients with a histologically confirmed clinical diagnosis of oral lichen planus and subsequently contacted the patients by phone to evaluate their prognosis. Results: Females were more likely than males to experience severe pain; the reticular form of Oral Lichen Planus was the most prevalent at 38.2%, but the erosive type was more prevalent among females. Only 53 of 68 patients responded to phone calls. More than 37% of those respondents reporte

EVALUATION THE EFFECT OF PRODIGIOSIN ON ALGD EXPRESSION IN CLINICAL ISOLATES OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA
...Show More Authors

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of prodigiosin on P. aeruginosa' s biofilm genes involved in the pathogenicity and persistency of the bacteria; Materials and methods: Gram negative bacterial isolates were taken from burn and wounds specimen obtained from some of Baghdad hospitals. Forty six isolates were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and four isolates as Serratia marcescens by using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 compact system. Susceptibility test was performed for all P. aeruginosa isolates, the results showed that 100% were resistant to Amikacin and 98% were sensitive to Meropenem. Resistant isolates were tested for biofilm formation; the strong and moderate isolates (17) were detected by PCR for AlgD gene

Pregnant women who have rubella may potentially pass the infection on to their unborn offspring. A congenital rubella infection can result in a miscarriage, stillbirth, and congenital rubella syndrome. The only member of the Togaviridae family’s Rubivirus genus, the Rubella virus (RV) is a positive-polarity, single-stranded RNA virus genome surrounded by a lipoprotein envelope with spike-like, hemagglutinin-containing surface projections. The objective: to determine the Rubella virus (1E genotype) in pregnant woman and its relation to spontaneous miscarriage.Materials and methods. A total of 174 women which visited Al-Elweya Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, were screened according to the following criteria: women with a history of
