Torn by War: Fragmented Individuals in Sam Shepard's States of Shock

Sam Shepard is considered as one of the modern American playwrights who combined the individual and the social in his plays to draw an image of a postmodern American society, and American family in particular by focusing on uniquely American aspects of culture. He is concerned with the individual in America rather than the institution. Shepard investigates, in almost all of his plays, the functions and dysfunctions of his characters, as well as the connections of individuals within the context of the family system and other social structures. The majority of his plays center on the struggle and conflict that occurs between father and son, husband and wife, and brother and brother as they strive for supremacy or for survival in a fractured society. This theme can be found at the heart of all of his works. In addition, his protagonists have a propensity to be cut off from the rest of their society and to experience a sense of disintegration as a result of living in a society that is being ravaged by war and the rise of capitalism. His protagonists typically awaken to the realization that this sense of destruction has shaped their lives and become the primary obstacle that prevents them from leading a normal life. This paper discusses Sam Shepard’s play States of Shock as an anti-war work in which the playwright portrays American individuals who are traumatized, physically and psychologically, by war that left them fragmented in their own society.

The incidence of Lower (UTI) according to the age and sex in Ramadi City.

Back ground: A urinary tract infection is one of the most common diseases occurring from neonate up to geriatric age groups
Patients and Methods: A total of (100) Midstream urine (MSU) samples were collected from patients having signs and symptoms of Lower urinary tract infection. These patients were attending Urology Clinic, Ramadi General Hospital.
Result: Culturing of (100) MSU samples on MacConky and blood agar resulted in (5) types of bacteria which included: Escherichia coli (46%) and it was found the most frequent bacteria causing LUTI. This is followed by Klebsiella pneumonia (23%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13%), Proteus mirabilis (10%) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (8%).
Conclusion: Out of

The spatial extent of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emission in the Herbig star HD 179218

Aim. We investigate, in the mid-infrared, the spatial properties of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission in the disk of HD 179218, an intermediate-mass Herbig star at ~300 pc.

Methods. We obtained mid-infrared images in the PAH-1, PAH-2 and Si-6 filters centered at 8.6, 11.3, and 12.5 μm, and N-band low-resolution spectra using CanariCam on the 10-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We compared the point spread function (PSF) profiles measured in the PAH filters to the profile derived in the Si-6 filter, where the thermal continuum emission dominates. We performed radiative transfer modeling of

A Soil-Pile Response under Coupled Static-Dynamic Loadings in Terms of Kinematic Interaction
Abstract<p>Although the axial aptitude and pile load transfer under static loading have been extensively documented, the dynamic axial reaction, on the other hand, requires further investigation. During a seismic event, the pile load applied may increase, while the soil load carrying capacity may decrease due to the shaking, resulting in additional settlement. The researchers concentrated their efforts on determining the cause of extensive damage to the piles after the seismic event. Such failures were linked to discontinuities in the subsoil due to abrupt differences in soil stiffness, and so actions were called kinematic impact of the earthquake on piles depending on the outcomes of laboratory</p> ... The Influence of Entamoeba histolytica Against Some Gut Microbiota in Children with Acute Amoebic

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the microbiota number of some common bacterial species in children's gut with Entamoeba histolytica infection. To achieve that,49 samples of stool were collected, 29 from children with acute amebiasis and 20 from healthy children, children's ages ranging from 1 month to 12 years from both genders. Counting three types of bacteria Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp. and Escherichia coli, using the standard curve obtained from Real-Time PCR was accomplished. The standard curve was made from decimal serial dilution of samples containing an unknown number of bacteria. The results showed that E. histolytica infection creates co

Biological Co-existence of the Microalgae – Bacteria System in Dairy Wastewater using photo-bioreactor

Aeration system in the cultivation of Chlorella Sp. Microalgae using dairy wastewater as culture media was addressed in the current study. This research aimed to study the effect of aeration in the bubble column bioreactor on the biological synergy between microalgae and bacteria if they are present in the same place. The results show that the sterilization stage is not the dominant step in the success of microalgae cultivation in water-rich organic waste. There is a clear convergence between the growth rate of Chlorella microalgae in the sterilized and non-sterilized culture media, which gives realism if the proposal is applied industrially. Through the information obtained the aerobic bacteria in the non-sterilized me

Population Density of Bemisia tabaci on Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Varieties in the Greenhouse
Abstract<p>We conducted an experiment in a greenhouse at the research station belonging to the Department of Plant Protection / Ministry of Agriculture, in Abu Ghraib area during the spring and autumn season 2022-2023, to study the population density of the whitefly on two varieties of sweet pepper plant (Charisma and Sierra Nevada). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design “RCBD” with three replicates for each variety. The results showed that in spring season the population density of B. tabaci eggs and nymphs reached the peak in the last week of May, which where 2.667 and 4.444 individual / leaf, respectively while the population density </p> ... Petrophysical Properties and Reservoir Assessment of Mishrif Formation in Eridu oil field, Southern Iraq

This study is achieved in the local area of the Eridu oil field, where the Mishrif Formation is considered the main productive reservoir. The Mishrif Formation was deposited during the Cretaceous period in the secondary sedimentary cycle (Cenomanian-Early Turonian as a part of the Wasia Group, a carbonate succession widespread throughout the Arabian Plate.

The Mishrif Formation already have been evaluated in terms of depositional environments and their diagenetic processes. Here, it will test the previous conclusions with petrophysical properties delineated by using well logging. The results show there is a fully matching with two reservoir units (MA and MB). Dissolution and primary porosity are responsible for f

The Effective M3Y Residual Interaction In 41Ca As a Nuclear Diffraction Grating of Electrons

The total and individual multipole moments of  magnetic electron scattering form factors in 41Ca  have been investigated using a widely successful model which is the nuclear shell model configurations keeping in mind of 1f7/2 subshell as an L-S shell and Millinar, Baymann, Zamick as L-S shell (F7MBZ) to give the model space  wave vector. Also, harmonic oscillator wave functions have been used as wave function of a single particle in 1f7/2  shell. Nucleus 40Ca as core closed and Core polarization effects have been used as a corrective with first order correction concept to basic computation of L-S shell and the excitement energy has been implemented with 2ћω. Variation of non-diatomic algae in a martyr monument lake under different climate factors
Abstract<p>The current study was conducted in the environment of the Martyr Monument Lake in the city center of Baghdad during 2019 to monitor the impact of climatic conditions such as drought, water shortage, high temperatures in the environment of the city and the lack of water flow during the years 2015 to 2018 and their effects on some of the physical and chemical factors of water and the dynamics of the phytoplankton community in the lake environment. Heterogeneity of some studied environmental factors, including air and water temperature, permeability, water depth, pH, DO, BOD5, nutrients, nitrate, NO3, and phosphates were found. The results showed the effect of climate change and the pres</p> ... Show More
